What are the different kinds of work-outs we must perform daily, to build up our spiritual reserves?

When our clothes get soiled, we are ashamed to appear in dirty garments and so we change them.

We clean our houses regularly and remove all dirt to keep it clean for family and friends.

But when our minds and hearts are polluted, we do not feel ashamed! Is it not strange that we should be so much concerned about the cleanness of our clothes or our homes, but are not concerned about the purity of our hearts and minds which affect our entire life?

To purify our hearts and minds, the first thing we must do is to lead a righteous life. Our actions must be based on morality. Indulging in abuse of others or inflicting pain on them is not a sign of human nature.

The evil that we do to others ultimately recoils on us. Auspicious days like festivals should be used for making resolutions to change our ways of life and to purify our behaviour by giving up all bad qualities.

- Divine Discourse, Apr 02, 1984.

Relationship

Relationship based on mutual need, brings only conflict. However, interdependent we are on each other, we are using each other for a purpose, for an end.

With an end in view, relationship is not. You may use me and I may use you. In this usage, we lose contact.

A society based on mutual usage is the foundation of violence. When we use another, we have only the picture of the end to be gained. The end, the gain, prevents relationship, communion. In the usage of another, however gratifying and comforting it may be, there is always fear.

To avoid this fear, we must possess. From this possession there arises envy, suspicion, and constant conflict. Such a relationship can never bring about happiness.

A society whose structure is based on mere need, whether physiological or psychological, must breed conflict, confusion and misery.

Society is the projection of yourself in relation with another, in which the need and the use are predominant.

When you use another for your need, physically or psychologically, in actuality there is no relationship at all; you really have no contact with the other, no communion with the other.

How can you have communion with the other when the other is used as a piece of furniture, for your convenience and comfort? So, it is essential to understand the significance of relationship in daily life.

See the truth in the false

You may superficially agree when you hear it said that nationalism, with all its emotionalism and vested interest, leads to exploitation and the setting of man against man; but to really free your mind from the pettiness of nationalism is another matter.

To be free, not only from nationalism but also from all the conclusions of organized religions and political systems, is essential if the mind is to be young, fresh, innocent, that is, in a state of revolution; and it is only such a mind that can create a new world—not the politicians, who are dead, nor the priests, who are caught in their own religious systems.

So, fortunately or unfortunately for yourself, you have heard something which is true; and if you merely hear it and are not actively disturbed so that your mind begins to free itself from all the things which are making it narrow and crooked, then the truth you have heard will become a poison.

Surely, truth becomes a poison if it is heard and does not act in the mind, like the festering of a wound. But to discover for oneself what is true and what is false, and to see the truth in the false, is to let that truth operate and bring forth its own action.

What is the remedy to be free from diseases and bondage?

The relationship between karma and karma-yoga should be properly understood.

Ordinary karma (action) done with attachment or desires causes bondage. But the same action, when performed desirelessly, with selflessness, becomes karma-yoga.

Our life should become a yoga (Divine Communion) rather than a 'roga' (disease).

Today, most of our actions result in roga because they are related to sensuous pleasures.

Freedom from this disease can be obtained by pursuing the spiritual path. Spiritual path does not consist merely in singing bhajans or reciting hymns. These are good deeds.

Only actions performed as a complete offering to the Divine can be regarded as spiritual. The individual who is in a state of ignorance about the Self, is like the bud of a flower that has not yet bloomed.

When the flower blossoms, it sheds its fragrance all round. Likewise the person who has realised the Divinity within oneself becomes a source of light and strength!

- Divine Discourse, Apr 06, 1983.

True spirituality consists in promoting human unity through harmonious living and sharing the joy with one and all.

There is no guide to truth

Is God to be found by seeking him out? Can you search after the unknowable?

To find, you must know what you are seeking. If you seek to find, what you find will be a self-projection; it will be what you desire, and the creation of desire is not truth.

To seek truth is to deny it. Truth has no fixed abode; there is no path, no guide to it, and the word is not truth.

Is truth to be found in a particular setting, in a special climate, among certain people? Is it here and not there?

Is that one the guide to truth, and not another? Is there a guide at all? When truth is sought, what is found can only come out of ignorance, for the search itself is born of ignorance. You cannot search out reality; you must cease for reality to be.

What is true miracle?

Temples in stone are reminders of the existence of the Divine.

When you see a lawyer you are reminded of your legal troubles. When you see a doctor you think of your illness. Likewise, when you see a temple, you are reminded of the Divine.

However, what pleases the Divine most is the permanent temples constructed in your hearts. True worship consists in heartfelt devotion to the Divine present within each and every one.

Purify the temple in your heart, and dedicate your life to service. It is such dedicated service, done in the spirit of sadhana, that must distinguish us from other organisations.

People talk about vibhuti (sacred ash) and miracles. But the real miracle is His boundless love which propels innumerable devotees - men and women, young and old to render selfless service in various forms to express their love for the divine.

Relentlessly practice purity, love and renunciation, and discover the secret of enduring peace and bliss yourself!

- Divine Discourse, Apr 6, 1983.

Take to the path of service. Then you can proceed along the path of adoration and ultimately attain illumination.

Knowledge diverts the mind

You have only one instrument, which is the mind; and the mind is the brain also. Therefore, to find out the truth of this matter, you must understand the ways of the mind, must you not?

If the mind is crooked you will never see straight; if the mind is very limited you cannot perceive the illimitable.

The mind is the instrument of perception and, to perceive truly, the mind must be made straight, it must be cleansed of all conditioning, of all fear.

The mind must also be free of knowledge, because knowledge diverts the mind and makes things twisted.

The enormous capacity of the mind to invent, to imagine, to speculate, to think—must not this capacity be put aside so that the mind is very clear and very simple?

Because it is only the innocent mind, the mind that has experienced vastly and yet is free of knowledge and experience; it is only such a mind that can discover that which is more than brain and mind.

Otherwise what you discover will be colored by what you have already experienced, and your experience is the result of your conditioning.

Why should we welcome difficulties and tests?

Look with an equal mind on good fortune and misfortune, on happiness and sorrow, loss and gain.

These are products of nature like heat and cold, summer and winter. They have their purposes to serve.

Similarly the ups and downs of life have lessons to teach us. In fact, without reverses in life, we shall not be able to experience Divinity.

Without darkness, we cannot value light. Without experiencing difficulties, we will not enjoy benefits. It is the lack of peace of mind which compels us to seek the means to realise enduring peace.

The Scriptures have declared that through renunciation alone, is immortality to be attained. You should learn to practise renunciation so that you may discover the secret of enduring peace and bliss.

- Divine Discourse, Apr 06, 1983.

There is no greater quality in you than selfless love, which expresses itself in service to others. Selfless love is the source of real bliss.
