THE 'PICKS AND SHOVELS' OF TELECOM IS SOARING

Today's chart looks at a big "picks and shovels" winner in the worldwide mobile-data boom.

Regular readers know we're proponents of investing in picks-and-shovels companies to profit from sector and commodity booms. These companies don't bet it all on one project. Instead, they sell goods and services to an entire industry.

American Tower (AMT) is a great example. The company owns and leases real estate all over the world that telecom giants AT&T and Verizon use for wireless infrastructure (like cellphone towers).

While AT&T and Verizon fight over market share, American Tower profits from both – along with many other carriers around the globe.

As you can see in the chart below, business is steadily growing for American Tower. Over the past three years, shares are up 60%... and yesterday set a new all-time high.

As long as folks continue to buy mobile devices and use more and more data, wireless "picks and shovels" businesses like American Tower should do well.

Under-the-Radar Retirement Stocks: American Tower (AMT)
Dividend Yield: 1.8%

Do you ever wonder how the signal from your cell phone connects to another cell phone across town, or across the country? Most people don’t, which is exactly the point.

American Tower Corp (NYSE:AMT), which manages roughly 40,000 cellular towers, is one of those names most investors have never heard of, but certainly would notice if American Tower were to shut them all down.

It’s a business model perfect for dishing out reliable dividends regardless of the economic environment.

Better yet, American Tower is set up as a real estate investment trust (REIT), making it a very tax-efficient means of passing along that income to investors.

Infrastructure Stocks to Buy: American Tower (AMT)

As the recovery efforts in Puerto Rico have proven, communication is vital to cleaning up the mess left behind by Hurricane Maria.

While they might not be glamorous assets, wireless cell towers are the backbone of any country’s infrastructure.

American Tower Corp (NYSE:AMT) is America’s largest operator of wireless cell towers. Basically, AMT owns the land and tower structure, while the telecom company provides the equipment that attaches to the cell tower.

Virtually 100% of its revenue comes from leasing its properties, which is why it operates as a real estate investment trust.

American Tower owns approximately 148,000 communication sites around the world, including 40,100 in the U.S., 18,700 in Brazil and 58,000 in India.

The beauty of its business model is that its costs are pretty straightforward:

First, it buys the land. That’s one expenditure. Then it puts up a cell tower. That’s the second expenditure. It then has ongoing costs such as property taxes, ground rent and maintenance, but with that comes significant upside just by adding additional customers to that single tower.

In a lot of ways, it’s very similar to sod farms in that the company owns the real estate until it becomes too expensive not to sell.

Boring, but vital.

THE 'PICKS AND SHOVELS' OF CELLPHONE PROVIDERS

Today, we look at a company you probably use without knowing it...

Many of the world's most famous companies rely on lesser-known businesses to make their products and services possible. These "picks and shovels" businesses can be great investments.

It's like selling mining tools during a gold rush: As long as plenty of folks are digging, you'll succeed no matter who hits pay dirt. Similarly, unless people stop using cellphones, today's company is likely to keep making sales...

American Tower (AMT) leases more than 170,000 properties to telecom companies for their cellphone towers. It doesn't discriminate among telecom rivals Verizon (VZ), T-Mobile (TMUS), and AT&T (T)...

All three, and more, rely on American Tower to maintain and expand their network coverage. This approach works: AMT's sales reached $7.4 billion last year, a nearly 12% increase over 2017.

As the chart shows, the market recognizes AMT's value. Shares are up more than 25% over the past year and recently hit a new all-time high. Whichever cellphone provider you choose, American Tower's progress should continue...

THIS TOWER OPERATOR HELPS OUT THREE WIRELESS GIANTS

American Tower (AMT) is a $98 billion wireless tower operator.

It leases out more than 170,000 of its "communication sites" to cellphone providers.

The three largest telecom companies in the U.S. – Verizon (VZ), AT&T (T), and T-Mobile (TMUS) – all rely on American Tower. And working with several large clients pays off...

In the most recent quarter, American Tower reported sales of $1.89 billion, up more than 6% from the same period last year.

As you can see in today's chart, AMT shares are soaring to new highs. The stock is up almost 50% over the past year, and it recently hit a fresh all-time high.

As long as cellphone companies need to expand and maintain their coverage, American Tower should continue to succeed...

Riding the wave of global internet growth with...real estate?

by Tyler Crowe

Investing in growth stocks over a multidecade period is incredibly hard because so few businesses are able to maintain their competitive advantages for that long.

Two things tend to remain constant over time, though: improving standards of living in emerging markets and real estate.

That combination of factors is what makes American Tower a compelling growth stock for the next half century. Don't let the name mislead you; the owner and operator of cellular towers isn't a pure play on the U.S.

Rather, it has a diverse portfolio of towers and structures for telecommunications equipment across 19 countries on four continents. In fact, less than a quarter of the company's (technically, it's a real estate investment trust, or REIT) assets are in the U.S.

As mobile data speeds become faster, data transmission requires a more dense network of communication equipment. Therefore, American Tower benefits from more tenants renting space for their equipment on tower sites.

This is providing ample room to grow in more mature markets such as the U.S. and Germany as they move from 4G to 5G as well as longer runways in emerging markets such as Nigeria and India as they move from 3G to 4G to 5G. According to management, smartphone data usage will grow 31% annually worldwide through at least 2023.

For American Tower investors, this has translated into stellar growth. Over the past decade, it has grown its free cash flow by more than 15% annually. The company is also making a large push into emerging markets in India, Latin America, and Africa, where it can get in on the ground floor of exponential data usage growth over the next several decades.

Whether cellular towers will remain the go-to method for communication equipment for the next half century remains to be seen, but it seems like a reasonable bet today, and it makes American Tower a very compelling growth stock for such a long time horizon.

Stocks to Watch for 2020 American Tower

American Tower (NYSE:AMT) isn’t exactly a household name, although it’s likely someone that lives in your household who consistently relies on the company’s service.

American Tower owns a network of 171,000 cell phone towers all over the world, leasing access to them to wireless telecom service providers like Verizon Communications (NYSE:VZ) and T-Mobile (NASDAQ:TMUS).

Clearly the need for this infrastructure is never going to go away. In fact, we’re entering a period where demand for mobile device connectivity towers could explode.

The advent of 5G connections is that driving force. With it, wireless internet speeds are rivaling more traditional coaxial and DSL (phone line broadband) speeds, opening the door to a whole new data-centric paradigm.

American Tower believes the amount of data transmitted via mobile devices will quadruple by 2023, and is preparing now to help wireless service providers meet the need.
