Best Dow Jones Stocks: Disney (DIS)

Perhaps the best Dow Jones stocks to buy are the ones that have suffered a tad bit, and that includes Walt Disney Co (NYSE:DIS).

Things haven’t been going gangbusters for the House of Mouse lately. The problems stem from four letters: E-S-P-N. With a million blogs, networks and other ways for viewers to get their sports fix, ESPN isn’t the behemoth it once was.

Adding to this is the general trend of cord cutting and the continued impact of streaming video. With this in mind, viewership and revenue for the sports channel have hurt Disney’s bottom line.

This has also hurt DIS stock over the last year.

But, perhaps those issues were a tad bit overblown. DIS actually has a lot going for it, namely its studio entertainment, parks and resorts and consumer products business.

All of these divisions continue to grow like weeds. For example, its latest Star Wars movie, Rogue One, continues to dominate the box office, while its Marvel comic franchise has produced many hits.

At the same time, DIS has unveiled plans to fight ESPN’s losses with new partnerships, streaming services and other tech buyouts. These should help turn the tide for any losses at the sports channel. In the end, Disney could be one of the best turnarounds when it comes to the Dow Jones stocks.

Stocks to Buy: Disney (DIS)

Anyone who has grown up in America since the 1940s, or who has reared children or grandchildren over the past five decades, knows all-too-well the draw that is the Walt Disney Co (NYSE:DIS).

Purveyors of iconic American characters such as Mickey and Minnie Mouse, Donald Duck, Goofy, Snow White and so many others, the company has built a media and entertainment empire by knowing what Americans (and the world) want to see.

Disney’s relatively recent acquisition of the Star Wars franchise is proof of the company’s commitment to remaining the leader in providing entertainment with the broadest appeal.

Founded on the genius of Walt Disney the man, the Disney Company was set up to be a dream factory capable of igniting children’s imaginations all over the world.

It’s safe to say that it has done just that, and that it will remain great long after President Trump has completed his tenure in the Oval Office.

There are Plenty of Reasons to Buy This Stock

By Bob Ciura

Disney stock has performed well recently; shares have gained 20% in the past six months.

But the stock may still be too cheap. Disney shares trade for a P/E ratio of 20, which is significantly below the average P/E of 26 in the S&P 500 Index.

Walt Disney Co (DIS) Stock Doesn’t Meet My NexGen Buy Criteria

DIS stock hasn't gained ground for the past two years

By Matt McCall

Three prongs for investing: fundamentals, technicals and what I like to call the intangibles.

DIS stock’s forward PE ratio is 15.88x, which is below that of the overall market as well as many of its peers.

Technicals: DIS stock’s recent rally has the stock trading at its best level in two weeks and back above all three major moving averages. However, it remains below important price resistance around $109.

Intangibles: Three things stand out to me here.

First, there is the struggling ESPN division that has experienced well-documented issues and major layoffs.

Second is the fact that recent movies haven’t kept up with past successes.

Third, and possibly the most important, is the question of who will be the next leader.

Disney

This top consumer media company has multiple streams of income to push revenue. Walt Disney Co. (NYSE: DIS) stock continues outperforming on a near-term and long-term basis.

With the movie studio business poised to improve, as with accelerating theme park business, the network programming continues to drive viewership with extensive sports programming. Combining that revenue growth with the company’s solid media networks and interactive presence, and the 2017 and 2018 revenue estimates could be conservative.

The Disney Media Networks segment operates broadcast and cable television networks, domestic television stations and radio networks and stations, and it is involved in the television production and television distribution operations.

Its cable networks include ESPN, Disney Channels and ABC Family, as well as UTV/Bindass and Hungama. This segment also owns eight domestic television stations. Disney is also one of 24/7 Wall St.’s top 10 stocks to own for the next decade.

Disney offers shareholders a 1.57% dividend. UBS has a $122 price target, and the consensus target is $118.70. The shares traded Thursday at $98.70.

Must-Own Retirement Stocks: Disney (DIS)

Walt Disney Co Stock Is Due for a Magical Run Higher

The Walt Disney Company (NYSE:DIS) is the premier media and entertainment company in the world.

As it is, it owns three extraordinary properties in Marvel Studios, Lucasfilm and Pixar films.

That says nothing about its own incredibly successful studio. Put all this together with the assets it hopes to acquire in the buyout of Twenty-First Century Fox Inc. (NASDAQ:FOXA), and Disney will have enough content that will literally last a generation and probably longer.

The theme parks and resorts have become a staple of tourism, and one that is constantly innovating and redefining itself.

Worst Stocks to Buy: Walt Disney Co (DIS)

The long-term case for Walt Disney Co (NYSE:DIS) remains up for debate. I remain skeptical toward DIS, largely due to the long-running (and very real) concerns surrounding the key ESPN unit.

The short-term case, however, looks outright bearish. Disney is trying to acquire assets from Twenty-First Century Fox Inc (NASDAQ:FOX, NASDAQ:FOXA) — a deal the market sees as necessary for Disney to build out its content empire.

But Comcast Corporation (NASDAQ:CMCSA) is stepping in to bid for Sky PLC (ADR) (OTCMKTS:SKYAY), which Fox itself is trying to buy. And that deal potentially could wind up scuttling the entire Disney-Fox tie-up — or push Disney to up its bid.

There’s going to be a lot of speculation, and a lot of uncertainty, over Disney’s M&A over the next few months. And in this market, that’s probably not going to be a great thing for DIS stock.

DIS already fell 6.6% in Q1, and between Fox and what looks like an accelerating trend toward cost-cutting, Q2 would be worse. There is value here, and the company’s new streaming service could drive growth in the future. But until then, and without a lower price, DIS looks likely to at best continue its range-bound trading of the last three years.

This Stock is (Finally) a Buy!

by Richard Robinson

Last December Disney announced a bid for 21st Century Fox (Nasdaq: FOX) to be funded with Disney stock. The deal should close in late 2018 or early next year.

Action To Take: Buy shares of Disney up to $110. Mitigate your risk by applying no more than 3% of your portfolio into shares of DIS. This is a long-term investment, so expect to hold shares for five years or longer. Use a 25% trailing stop on your position.
