Ad fraud could top US$50bil

BY SHARIDAN M. ALI

THE World Federation of Advertisers (WFA) has estimated that the value of advertising fraud (ad fraud) on the digital platform could reach in excess of US$50bil by 2025.

Due to growing concerns over cyber crime, WFA is currently spearheading an awareness campaign through its freshly published Compendium of Ad Fraud Knowledge for Media Investors.

Ad fraud, by definition, is associated with an activity where impressions, clicks, actions or data events are falsely reported to criminally earn revenue or for other purposes of deception and malice.

[b]5 Stocks to Buy If You Want to Win the Internet[/b

Digital advertising is growing rapidly but dominated by only a couple of key players

By Ryan Fuhrmann

Last year, total media advertising in the United States was a nearly $200 billion market. Respectably, it is growing about 10% a year.

Television advertising represents about a third of the overall market, making it one of the largest ad markets out there. However, it is only growing a couple of percent a year.

Digital advertising, or ads that run on computers and mobile devices, has represented the fastest-growing segment in the industry for at least five years now.

By next year (2017), it is expected to finally exceed TV advertising and represent a nearly $80 billion annual opportunity.

Digital video from the likes of Alphabet Inc‘s (NASDAQ:GOOGL, NASDAQ:GOOG) YouTube and Yahoo! Inc. (NASDAQ:YHOO) are growing gangbusters, though still a small overall market closer to $10 billion.

China: New Online Advertisements Regulation

Beijing recently announced guidance requiring online advertising companies to restrict the number of advertising to less than 30 percent of each page.

An additional wrinkle mandates that all online ads also must be clearly designated as such to help consumers differentiate between sponsored and true search results.

A big part of JP Morgan’s downbeat assessment of Baidu is due to the industry shift of advertising dollars away from search engine into social media channels.
