Internet of Things Stocks to Buy: Alphabet (GOOG, GOOGL)

Don’t be fooled into thinking that Alphabet (GOOG, GOOGL) is only an Internet search and advertising giant. It also has assets that are crucial to the IoT.

This includes Android, the world’s most popular operating system. Much like Apple, GOOG has proven itself successful with operating systems beyond Android, such as Chrome. Chances are GOOG will be crucial in developing the operating systems that lie at the epicenter of the Internet of Things, along with Apple.

Furthermore, Alphabet has its hand in everything from self-driving cars to being a wireless service provider to ultra-high-speed Internet with Google Fiber.

These are all initiatives, along with hardware like Nexus and Google Glass, that paint a very pretty picture for Alphabet’s future place in the Internet of Things.

Be Thankful for Google (GOOGL)

Let’s start with the obvious: the stock that’s leading InvestorPlace’s Best Stocks of 2015 contest thanks to stellar 44% year-to-date gains.

Paul R. La Monica is definitely thankful his pick of Google (GOOG) — which is now technically Alphabet — is going as planned.

As La Monica pointed out this fall, Google reported strong YouTube growth and expanding mobile ad operations — two key catalysts for the upwards momentum.

Meanwhile, the company continues to push the ball forward with artificial intelligence all while curbing spending thanks largely to its new CFO.

Then again, there has been a lot to be thankful for when it comes Google stock for some time. Over the past five years, shares have expanded by more than 150%.

THIS INNOVATIVE TECH GIANT JUST HIT AN ALL-TIME HIGH

Today's chart showcases another elite tech company ripping higher...

These companies have thick profit margins and generate huge amounts of cash.

Today, we're featuring another successful tech stock... Alphabet Inc. (formerly known as Google). At its core, the company is an advertisement seller and search engine. But it has expanded into other businesses recently, including building robots and self-driving cars. The recent spinoff will reorganize the business and help it grow.

As you can see from the chart below, business has been good for the tech giant. Shares are up 40%-plus over the past year... and just rallied to a new all-time high.

It's an innovative, fast-growing, cash-rich business to add to our list of tech winners.

What Should You Do With Google Stock?

Google stock isn't outrageously expensive, but it's overreliant on ads

Google stock is girded by $73 billion in cash and only $2 billion in short-term debt.

Google stock has almost $15 billion in free cash flow over the trailing 12 months.

Net income for Google stock increased 21% from $10.7 billion in FY12 to $12.9 billion in FY13, and another 12% to $14.4 billion in FY14. It is on track for about a 10-11% increase this year.

90% of its revenue is advertising.

At $29 per share in estimated earnings for FY15, and a stock price (minus net cash) of $651, GOOG trades at 22x estimates.

That’s not completely unreasonable, but it’s not great, either.

For a company growing net income at 12%, plus the 30% premium I give it for having a world-class brand name, free cash flow and cash on hand, I could justify about a P/E of 16.

But do I want to pay 22x for a company with a non-diversified revenue stream and a VC portfolio? It’s a close call.
