AirAsia pre-tax profit slightly higher at RM 26.46m

KUALA LUMPUR: Low-cost carrier AirAsia Bhd posted profit before tax of RM26.46mil in the third quarter ended Sept 30, 2014, which was a slight improvement from the RM25.11mil a year ago.

AirAsia reported on Wednesday profit after tax was RM5.39mil compared with RM35.48mil a year ago. Earnings per share were 0.2 sen compared with 1.3 sen.

The group recorded revenue of RM1.317bil for the quarter ended Sept 30, 2014 (Q3, FY14), 3% higher than the revenue of RM1.280bil recorded a year ago.

“The revenue growth was supported by a 0.5% increase in passenger numbers and a 3% increase in unit passenger revenues to RM216 as compared to RM210 achieved in Q3, FY13.

“Ancillary income per passenger increased by 15% to RM47 year-on-year. The seat load factor was at 77%, consistent with the same period last year,” it said.

AirAsia said the group’s cash generated from operations was RM85.1mil compared to cash outflows from operations of RM89.2mil in second quarter ended June 30, 2014. Net cash flow amounted to a RM36.9mil outflow, as cash outflows from investing activities exceeded financing and operations cash in flows.

“The group’s total debt as of end September 2014 was RM 11.8bil. The group’s net debt after offsetting the cash balances amounted to RM10.7bil,” it said.

AirAsia said the Q3, FY14 profit after taxation of RM5.4mil was “RM361.8mil lower compared to the RM367.2mil profit after taxation achieved in the immediately preceding quarter ended June 30, 2014”.

Commenting on the Q3 FY14 results, the current taxation charge was RM10.6mil comprising of tax payable on interest income. There was also RM10.4mil of deferred tax liabilities arose in the current financial period as a result of the net of the movement in deferred tax liabilities and deferred tax assets recognised.

AirAsia explained that deferred tax liabilities arise from the difference between the net book value and tax written down value of property, plant and equipment while deferred tax assets arise from capital allowances granted in the period but which remained unused at the balance sheet date, in combination with the investment allowances granted on aircraft delivery.

In the nine-months ended Sept 30, 2014 its earnings jumped to RM512.27mil from RM198.62mil in the previous corresponding period. Revenue was higher at RM3.928bil compared with RM3.835mil a year ago.

On the derivative financial instruments, as at Sept 30, 2014, AirAsia had hedged approximately 46% of the US dollar liabilities of its aircraft and engine loans into Malaysian Ringgit by using long dated foreign exchange forward contracts. The latest weighted average of the US dollar/ringgit forward exchange rate was 3.2251.

It said as at Sept 30, 2014, the group has entered interest rate hedging transactions to hedge against fluctuations in the US$ Libor on its existing aircraft financing for aircraft delivering from 2005 to 2014.

It added as at Sept 30, 2014, the group had entered into Singapore Jet Kerosene fixed swaps which represents up to 43% of the Group’s total budgeted fuel consumption for the fourth quarter of 2014.

AirAsia also said the group had also entered into Singapore Jet Kerosene fixed swap which represented up to 21% and 10% of the group’s budgeted fuel consumption for the first and second quarter of 2015 respectively.

On the prospects, AirAsia said the group would not be taking delivery of any A320 aircraft in the fourth quarter of the year. During the same period three older aircraft are planned to be disposed and one aircraft leased to a third party was returned and will commence services.

149 Indonesians, 3 South koreans, one Briton in missing AirAsia plane

An AirAsia plane with 162 people on board went missing en route from Indonesia to Singapore Sunday morning, officials and the airline said, in the third major incident to affect a Malaysian carrier this year.

“The AirAsia flight flying from Surabaya to Singapore lost contact with Jakarta at 7:55am (local time),” Indonesian transport ministry spokesman J.A. Barata told AFP.

The Airbus A320-200 left Juanda international airport in Surabaya in east Java at 5:20am and was expected to arrive in Singapore at 8:30am (0030 GMT).

Indonesia’s air transportation director general Djoko Murjatmodjo told AFP the plane was carrying seven crew and 155 passengers — 138 adults, 16 children and a baby, updating earlier figures.

Local broadcaster MetroTV reported that the passengers included 149 Indonesians, three South Koreans, including a baby, one Briton and one Malaysian and one Singaporean.

Murjatmodjo said search efforts were being focused on an area between Belitung island and Kalimantan, on the western side of the island of Borneo, about halfway along the expected route of Flight QZ8501.

“We are coordinating with rescue team and looking for its position. We believe it is somewhere between” Tanjung Pandan, a town on Belitung island, and Kalimantan, he said. Singapore’s Civil Aviation Service said the plane lost contact with Jakarta air traffic control while it was in Indonesian air space.

“Search and rescue operations have been activated by the Indonesian authorities from the Pangkal Pinang Search and Rescue office,” it said, adding that Singapore’s navy and air force had offered their help.

Malaysia-based AirAsia confirmed its plane was missing.

“At the present time we unfortunately have no further information regarding the status of the passengers and crew members on board, but we will keep all parties informed as more information becomes available,” the airline said.

“At this time, search and rescue operations are in progress and AirAsia is cooperating fully and assisting the rescue service.”

The latest incident comes at the end of a disastrous year for Malaysian aviation.

Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370, carrying 239 people, disappeared in March after inexplicably diverting from its Kuala Lumpur-Beijing course. No trace of the aircraft has been found.

Just months later MH17 went down in July in rebellion-torn eastern Ukraine — believed to have been hit by a surface-to-air missile — killing all 298 aboard.

AirAsia, Asia’s budget travel leader, is led by flamboyant boss Tony Fernandes, a former record industry executive who acquired the then-failing airline in 2001. It has seen spectacular success and aggressive growth under his low-cost, low-overhead model.

While its rival Malaysia Airlines faces potential collapse after two disasters this year, AirAsia confirmed this month its order of 55 A330-900neo at a list price of $15 billion.

TOL:-

How can a flight be moved forward by 2 hours, from 7.30am to 5.30am ?

Also, if the flight is to take off at 5.30am, dont you have to go the airport at 3.00 am ?

And doesn't that means that you have to get up at 2.00am ?

DJ Bold Call of the Year: RHB Says Buy Into AirAsia 'Dip' -- Market Talk

0324 GMT [Dow Jones] RHB Research Institute says the drop in the AirAsia (5099.KU) share price on Monday is an opportunity to buy the carrier.

The house maintains a buy rating on the stock with a target of 3.47 ringgit, despite the feared loss of Flight 8501 flown by Indonesia AirAsia, which is 49% owned by Air Asia.

"With the stock widely held by institutional funds, we foresee any price weakness from this tragedy to follow through with a rebound," the house says, noting that a 2.5% reduction in operating yields (revenue per passenger per mile flown), which have been at rock-bottom levels, would reduce earnings by 6% for financial year 2015.

The incident may also mean bigger losses for the unlisted Indonesia AirAsia. The analyst projects that AirAsia in financial year 2015 will lose 30 million ringgit on its exposure to Indonesia AirAsia.

The AirAsia stock is down 7.8% at 2.71 ringgit.
