Relationship with Nature

The death of a tree is beautiful in its ending, unlike man's.

A dead tree in the desert, stripped of its bark, polished by the sun and the wind, all its naked branches open to the heavens, is a wondrous sight.

A great redwood, many, many hundreds of years old, is cut down in a few minutes to make fences, seats, and build houses or enrich the soil in the garden. The marvellous giant is gone.

Man is pushing deeper and deeper into the forests, destroying them for pasture and houses. The wilds are disappearing.

There is a valley, whose surrounding hills are perhaps the oldest on earth, where cheetahs, bears and the deer one once saw have entirely disappeared, for man is everywhere.

The beauty of the earth is slowly being destroyed and polluted. Cars and tall buildings are appearing in the most unexpected places.

When you lose your relationship with nature and the vast heavens, you lose your relationship with man.

The Marvellous Earth

As you walked on the beach the waves were enormous and they were breaking with magnificent curve and force.

You walked against the wind, and suddenly you felt there was nothing between you and the sky, and this openness was heaven.

To be so completely open, vulnerable - to the hills, to the sea, and to man - is the very essence of meditation.

To have no resistance, to have no barriers inwardly towards anything, to be really free, completely, from all the minor urges, compulsions, and demands, with all their little conflicts and hypocrisies, is to walk in life with open arms.

And that evening, walking there on that wet sand, with the sea gulls around you, you felt the extraordinary sense of open freedom and the great beauty of love which was not in you or outside you - but everywhere.

All of this has led scientists to speculate that the plastic has created a false food web, most likely spurred by the microbes' end-goal of getting into fish stomachs, where they have access to an endless stream of nutrients that would otherwise be unavailable to them. "This is like a bait-and-wait situation for these microbes," says Mincer. "As we look closer at their genes, we see they have the ability to colonize intestinal tissue." Mincer is part of a team of scientists from Woods Hole and the Sea Education Association who have received funding from the National Science Foundation to better understand this new ocean world they have dubbed the "plastisphere."
