Visa (V) SHARES a lower this morning after the world's largest credit and debit card company provided a weaker-than-expected outlook for its current quarter.

The company expects the strong dollar and less spending by consumers on gas transactions to continue to put pressure on its bottom line.

This comes as Visa reported a slight beat on earnings and revenue last quarter

Most stores accept both Visa and MasterCard, but hedge funds have a clear choice of which stock they prefer.

MasterCard (MA) was among the stocks that hedge funds sold the most of in the first quarter, while they added to Visa (V).

It's an interesting trade. Mastercard is actually up slightly more than Visa this year, although they are almost neck-in-neck.

The two are facing more competition from PayPal and Apple Pay.

7 Big Tech Stocks Worth Your Attention: Visa Inc (V)

You may not think of Visa Inc (NYSE:V) as a tech stock, but if you think of how quickly we’re transitioning to a cashless society, you get a taste of how Visa fits into this facet of tech.

Visa is essentially a middle man between banks and consumers. It covers consumer spending on credit or debit cards until the banks confirm the transaction and allocate the cash. Since this takes risks off the banks and allows a trustworthy brand to secure transactions for consumers, it becomes a very popular resource.

That’s why Visa takes it cut from merchants who also rely on it to clear transactions for them, for a fee.

The growth here isn’t necessarily in the North America and Europe as much as it is in developing nations in South America and Africa. As more merchants have access to electronic fund transfers and can move away from cash transactions, the faster the Visa brand will grow.

There’s also enormous latent opportunities in the credit card market as well if the economy continues to recover.

Visa (V)
YTD performance: +6%
Current price: $69
Price target: $77

Visa is an obvious winner from the consumer shift away from cash and towards electronic payments. But there's still a ton of room to grow.

Cash makes up 85% of purchase transactions and 55% of retail payment volume globally, according to Morgan Stanley.

Plus, Visa is only just getting started in the mega market of China.

That's why the firm has "high conviction" Visa can sustain its mid-teens earnings growth "over the foreseeable future."
