DJ China Hog Prices Rebound, State Stockpiling Supports -NDRC

BEIJING--China's hog prices rose this month after four months of consecutive price declines, supported by the government's stockpiling of frozen pork for reserves, the National Development and Reform Commission said.

As of June 13, the average nationwide price was 14.08 yuan ($2.23) a kilogram, up 1% from a week earlier, the country's top economic planner said in a statement on its website Monday.

The NDRC bought frozen pork in two batches for reserves, but didn't provide details on the volume.

It suggested that producers appropriately reduce sow numbers to avoid oversupply.

China began stockpiling pork in mid-April, after returns from hog production--which are measured by the hog-to-corn price ratio--fell below the break-even level of 6.

Pork meat stocks pile up in China

China, the world's top consumer of pork, produced 25.88 million tonnes of the meat in the first half of the year, up 5.9 percent from a year ago, data from the National Bureau of Statistics showed today.

Hog inventories stood at 455.26 million heads by the end of June, up 3.5 percent from a year-ago period, the bureau said.

The higher inventories would help sustain a healthy demand for animal feed, including corn and soymeal. China is the world's largest soy importer and second largest corn consumer, Reuters reports.

The bureau also put the country's rapeseed output harvested during May and June at 12.92 million tonnes, a rise of 3.7 percent from last year. The summer oilseed output represents about 93 of the country's total rapeseed output.

Rapeseed imports may rise to close to a record high this year given the damage to domestic crops in major growing areas from adverse weather.

The China National Grain and Oils Information Center, an official think-tank, on Thursday lowered its 2012 estimate for the country's total rapeseed output to 12.2 million tonnes, down 9.13 percent from last year. The center earlier expected rapeseed output at 12.8 million tonnes.

Pork and Chicken Set to Join Luxury List

Get ready for pork and chicken to become luxury items.

Pork and chicken will join beef on the menu of expensive meats as drought and US ethanol policy combine in a corn “disaster”, the head of the world’s largest pork producer has said, FT reports.

The cost of the main ingredients in animal feed, corn and soyameal, have set records this month as the worst drought in half a century and extreme heat damages crops in the US, the world’s main surplus producer.

“Beef is simply going to be too expensive to eat. Pork is not going to be too far behind. Chicken is catching up fast,” said Larry Pope, chief executive of Smithfield Foods.

“I’ll use the word catastrophe – that’s my definition,” Pope told FT in an interview.

Pope warned US meat prices will rise by “significant double digits,”

Making matters worse is US government regulations. The US Department of Agriculture estimates almost 40 per cent of the US corn crop is consumed by ethanol refineries.

“It’s almost a government-mandated disaster here, which is distressing,” Pope said.

Pig Slaughter Shrinks Supply to 1975 Low in Drought: Commodities By Elizabeth Campbell

U.S. hog farmers are slaughtering animals at the fastest pace since 2009 as a surge in feed costs spurs the biggest losses in 14 years, signaling smaller herds next year and a rebound in pork prices.

The 73.3 million hogs processed in eight months through August were the most in three years, U.S. Department of Agriculture data show.

Pork supply will drop to the lowest per- capita since 1975 next year, the USDA estimates. Hog futures that fell more than any other commodity since June 30 may surge 41 percent in 12 months to as high as $1.055 a pound, based on the median of 12 analyst forecasts compiled by Bloomberg.

Ag-flation returns: Why beef prices could be set to SOAR

U.S. beef production is plunging to a 21-year low after surging feed costs spurred ranchers to cut herds, signaling record prices for consumers and higher costs for buyers from McDonald's Corp. (MCD) to Ruth's Chris Steak House.

Production in the U.S. will decline 4.9 percent to 10.93 million metric tons in 2014, retreating for a fourth year, the government says. The herd on July 1 was the smallest for that date since at least 1973, according to the average of four analyst estimates compiled by Bloomberg.

The most-active cattle futures will rise 6.8 percent to $1.33 a pound next year, a level last seen in February, the median of nine forecasts shows.

Beef prices hit all-time high in U.S.

Extreme weather has thinned the nation's cattle herds, roiling the beef supply chain from rancher to restaurant.

Meat CRISIS: Why prices are "skyrocketing" to all-time highs

From Michael Snyder

As the price of meat continues to skyrocket, will it soon be considered a “luxury item” for most American families? This week we learned that the price of meat in the United States rose at the fastest pace in more than 10 years last month. Leading the way is the price of shrimp.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the price of shrimp has jumped an astounding 61 percent compared to a year ago. The price of pork is also moving upward aggressively thanks to a disease which has already killed about 10 percent of all of the pigs in the entire country. And the endless drought in the western half of the country has caused the size of the U.S. cattle herd to shrink to a 63 year low and has pushed the price of beef to an all-time high.

This is really bad news if you like to eat meat. The truth is that the coming “meat crisis” is already here, and it looks like it is going to get a lot worse in the months ahead.
