2012 is here ...

Unusually high tide at East Coast raises brows

Beachgoers at East Coast over the Christmas weekend might have been surprised by unusually high tides, which ran up the beach and filled the canals that drain into the sea.

The recorded tide on Christmas Day was 3.4m, said the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore. That is 0.2m higher than the predicted level, which is based on the movements of the moon and sun, it added.

'It is normal to record a higher spring tide during the north-east monsoon and the difference is mainly due to meteorological factors largely due to strong or prolonged winds,' a spokesman said.

A spring tide occurs when the moon is full or new, the moon and sun are aligned, and the gravitational pull of both is strongest; at those times, maximum tides are very high and minimum ones are very low.

I was at East Coast on Dec 29 (not Xmas though) and did not know about this news until yesterday.

Specified to what I saw, there was a very small drizzle that day (not big enough to deter my kid from cycling). I did noticed the canal (or drains) along East Coast was at a fairly high level given the rainfall (hardly considered a rainfall).

My thoughts at that moment was :

1. If the water level is so high here ( a drain that connects to the sea), won't it be worse at flood prone area?

2. If it was due to high tide, and the drain is already at this level, won't the impact be compounded when it really pours?

3. What is the impact at the barrage. (Given huge rainfall, high tide, and its attempt to open the gate to drain the water)?
1. Always wait for the setup. NO SETUP; NO TRADE

2. The trend will END but I don't know WHEN.

Govt needs to speed up flood prevention plans: Minister

Singapore - Minister of Environment and Water Resources Dr Vivian Balakrishnan said that that the Government will have to speed up plans to build up reserve capacity to deal with floods here.

Referring to the recent floods at Liat Towers in Orchard Road last Friday, he said that there is a need to reduce the loading of Stamford Canal, after parts of it overflowed into the mall, The Straits Times reported.

The paper added that the minister also pointed out that these plans are costly projects and will have to be approached with care.

Dr Balakrishnan promised to present a full update on flood prevention in Parliament next week.

7 months into office and this girly name is just reacting to the flooding problems...
one would have thought that we had this problem well before he assumed office and should not need for another bout of floodings to do his job...

And why didn't he highlight it way before the flood that took place recently
