8 reasons why local dramas are shunned.

http://forums.asiaone.com/showthread.php?t=43662
Shin Min Daily News conducted a survey among 30 people to find out what they think of local Chinese drama serials.

This comes after Minister Lee Yi Shyan commented yesterday that local dramas lack depth with characters that communicate too little and fight too much.

Half of those surveyed said that they would rather watch drama serials from Hong Kong, Taiwan, Korea and Japan.

One of those surveyed, Mr Huang (age 29) pointed out that local drama serials are stale and lack fresh ideas, unlike Hong Kong dramas that always seem fresh for him.

Ms Zhou (age 24) feels that local drama serials lack originality and often copy storylines from overseas dramas. Ms Zhou points out one example of drama serial "Mrs PI", which she feels is similar to the Hong Kong drama "The Family Link" which aired in 2007.

The survey summed up eight major reasons why local audiences are turning away from local drama serials.

1. Stale and dull storylines.

2. Poor acting by the younger generation of actors.

3. A lack of originality and resemblances to Hong Kong drama serials.

4. Some actors have a poor command of Chinese.

5. Predictable storylines that lack twists and turns.

6. Poorly scripted lines.

7. Lack of good looking idols to turn drama serials into "idol dramas".

8. Slow and draggy storylines.

To these findings, Mediacorp's senior executive Chen Guo Ming states that viewership figures for local Chinese drama serials indicate that they are still very popular.

Viewership figures show that the recent nine o'clock drama serials are still attracting around 900,000 viewers every night.

The controversial drama "Love Thy Neighbour" garners an average of 920,000 viewers making it the second highest rated drama this year after police drama "C.L.I.F".Source: Shin Min Daily News, 13 October 2011

Singapore hosts dumpling eating contest
Sky News Australia

Singapore has played host to a competitive dumpling eating contest, as part of an Asian tour involving Australia, Hong Kong and Thailand.

Competitors were challenged to eat the most number of dumplings in eight minutes.

Nineteen-year-old California native Matt 'Megatoad' Stonie, came out on top, ingesting a total of 210 wontons.

But that score is nowhere near last year's record of 380 wontons, set by world No. 1 Joey 'Jaws' Chestnut.

What else is new from this country ?

Jail goes to the dogs as inmates live the good life
Thursday, October 27, 2011

Guards at a jail in Hebei province sold luxuries including pure-breed dogs, spirits and mobile phones to inmates, state media said.

An investigation into the jail in Shenzhou city found guards were supplementing their income by selling pets and bottles of the spirit baiju at high prices, Shanghai's Oriental Morning Post said.

Access to prison keys was poorly supervised and some inmates even had copies, said the Shanghai Daily.

The lax security and perks enjoyed by the prisoners only emerged after an inmate escaped in September.

The jailbreak sparked a massive manhunt involving hundreds of police before he was captured two weeks later.

This prompted the government to investigate the jail, which has more than 3,000 inmates.

Guards were found to have sold a plethora of banned items including cell phones for surfing the internet, alcohol and even, according to one report, the popular chow chow breed of dog.

Some officials blamed the prison's aging infrastructure which had poorly constructed walls and unstable power supply, causing its electrified fence to periodically shut off.

The government has pledged to move inmates to a new facility under construction nearby. Authorities have sacked the warden and arrested two guards.

NEWS: SMRT Bus driver escaped back to Malaysia after horrific accident at Yishun

Old woman dies in horrific accident

Shin Min Daily News - 25 mins ago

An old woman was run over by a bus this morning at Yishun.

The horrific accident saw the bus run over the head of Mdm Huang Shu Hong (age 60), killing her on the spot.

The bus was said to have escaped from the scene after the accident, which happened at about 9.20am at the junction of Yishun Ave 2 and Yishun Central 1.
According to witnesses, an SMRT bus 858 was turning right at the junction when it somehow hit Mdm Huang.

The bus driver was also said to have fled the scene immediately after the accident.

Reporters managed to contact the bus driver, who had apparently escaped back to Malaysia.

The man explained that he had been working in Singapore for two years and has never encountered something like this.

He said, "I was very scared at the time, my head was a blank and I only thought to get away. I'm coming back to give myself up now."

When reporters arrived at the scene of the accident, a large pool of blood, locks of hair and a pair of crushed spectacles were seen lying on the road amidst scattered vegetables and joss sticks.

Mdm Huang is believed to have been returning home from the nearby market when she was hit by the bus.

Mdm Huang's husband also arrived shortly after he was informed of the accident by a neighbour. The man broke down upon seeing his wife's remains on the road.

Boy, 10, calls school bus worker "a beggar, poor"
Edvantage | Thu Aug 11 2011

A shocked an humiliated bus 'auntie' quit her job in a huff, after suffering a scolding by a primary school pupil from a prestigious school.

The boy called her "a beggar" and "poor", in front of the other pupils on the bus, and even announced that it was his mother who told him that.

Madam Huang, 61, who accompanies students on their ride in the school bus, tendered her resignation as she could not bear the injustice and humilation of being 'bullied' by a primary school pupil at her age.

Madam Huang contacted the Shin Min Daily News to complain about her treatment at the hands of the 10-year-old.

She told the reporter that had joined the transport company which provided school bus services two years ago - her role was to accompany the bus driver on his route to pick students up from their homes.

Madam Huang said there was a Primary 3 pupil who was particularly mischievous, and often ran around on the bus and behaved in an unruly manner. His antics gave her and the driver a headache, said Madam Huang.

"What if he suffers a fall on the bus?", said Madam Huang, who always asked that he sit right behind the driver's seat so she could keep a watch over him, but the boy refused.

Madam Huang said she had tried complaining to his mother about the boy's behaviour, but the mother did not apologise or promise to take him in hand.

Instead, she complained that Madam Huang was the one that was creating trouble for her son.

In April, when the boy refused to sit down and behave on board the bus, Madam Huang scolded him, but got a rude shock when he retorted: "You are a beggar, poor, no money."

Madam Huang said the driver, who had heard what he said, was taken aback by the boy's outburst as well, and questioned the boy.

The boy said his mother had told him that, and again repeated his insults.

Madam Huang said she felt humiliated, but could do nothing.
