New Kindles 'sold out'

SAN FRANCISCO - AMAZON.COM says it has already sold out of the two new Kindle e-reader models it announced last week.

A spokesman confirmed on Monday that the company is temporarily sold out of the Kindles. Both can wirelessly download books - a US$189 (S$255) model does so over 3G cellular networks and Wi-Fi, while a $139 model just uses Wi-Fi.

Amazon.com Inc started taking new Kindle orders on July 28, saying they would ship to customers on Aug 27. On Monday, its website said customers could still order the devices, and they're expected to ship on or before Sept 4.

Amazon's website indicated that its larger-screen Kindle, the US$379 Kindle DX, is still in stock.

It's hard to determine how the Kindle is selling overall since the online retailer has not disclosed sales figures. -- AP

Staples to start selling Amazon's Kindle

http://www.reuters.com/article/idUSTRE67U23V20100831

(Reuters) - Office supplies retailer Staples Inc will begin selling Amazon.com Inc's Kindle, the latest deal that will expand the availability of the e-reader at retail locations.

Staples will start selling the devices at its more than 1,500 U.S. stores starting in the autumn, the company said on Tuesday. It plans to sell the $139 version of the Kindle, the 3G model and the more expensive Kindle DX.

Amazon, the world's largest online retailer, has sought to make its Kindle available at more stores as it competes with devices such as Barnes & Noble Inc's Nook and Apple Inc's iPad to win a larger share of the growing digital books market.

In April, Target Corp reached a deal to start selling the Kindle in its stores, while electronics retailer Best Buy Co Inc said it would sell the Nook at its 1,070 stores.

Forrester Research estimates that Amazon has sold about 5 million Kindles since the product's launch in 2007, and that Barnes & Noble has sold 1 million Nooks since it introduced the device last year.

Amazon Said to Plan Film, TV Web Service With Studios

http://noir.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid ... iGZs4Csy74
Sept. 1 (Bloomberg) -- Amazon.com Inc. has approached media companies including Time Warner Inc. with plans to start an online video subscription service to rival Netflix Inc., said three people with knowledge of the talks.

The service, sold for a monthly fee by the Seattle-based Web retailer, would consist of older films and TV shows, said the people, who asked not to be identified because the conversations are private. They said talks are early and could still fall apart.

Time Warner, MTV owner Viacom Inc. and General Electric Co.’s NBC Universal have all been contacted, the people said. Amazon.com Chief Executive Officer Jeff Bezos is broadening the retailer’s digital entertainment services to combat rivals such as Netflix, Hulu LLC and Apple Inc., which distributes a range of music, TV and film through its iTunes online bazaar.

Amazon would structure content deals in ways similar to Netflix, which pays media companies for rights to stream TV shows and films over the Web, said one of the people.

“A serious move into subscription content -- while perhaps appropriate strategically -- could further weigh on earnings capability,” Douglas Anmuth, an analyst with Barclays Capital Inc. in New York, wrote in a note today. He rates Amazon “overweight.”

While Amazon has the brand and user base to compete in online streaming, acquiring content will be expensive, Anmuth wrote. Netflix has the advantage of a hybrid subscription model with streaming and mail-order DVDs, which helped subsidize the shift to streaming, he said.

TVs and Blu-ray Players

Keith Cocozza, a spokesman for New York-based Time Warner, declined to comment.

Amazon spokesman Craig Berman, Rebecca Marks, a spokeswoman for New York-based NBC, and Kelly McAndrew, a spokeswoman for New York-based Viacom, also declined to comment.

The subscription service would be accessible on Web browsers and Internet-connected TV sets, Blu-ray players and Microsoft Corp.’s Xbox 360 video-game console, according to the Wall Street Journal, which reported Amazon’s plans yesterday.

...

Apple, based in Cupertino, California, plans to announce a new set-top box that includes programming from Netflix, three people with knowledge of the plans said yesterday.

Amazon gained $1.59 to $126.42 at 9:32 a.m. New York time on the Nasdaq Stock Market. Before today the shares had lost 7.2 percent this year.

Sony was the first to come out with the idea of an e-book reader. But, they did not build a deep relationship with the publisher.

Amazon did it right with the publishers.

amazon was very smart to see the opportunity to value add to publishers.. and also to hold hostage the publishers...

so, the relationship becomes more balanced...

people like borders, have not much bargaining power except for their retail outlets

businesses have always been about a crucial relationship with suppliers....especially technology business...

Amazon quarterly profit falls 73 percent

(Reuters) - Amazon.com Inc reported a 73 percent drop in quarterly profit on Tuesday after spending heavily on its new tablet computer and other long-term projects.

The stock tumbled 12 percent Tuesday in extended trading as the news raised concern that Amazon was losing some of the revenue momentum that had helped investors overlook its razor-thin profit margins.
