SGX has been drifting in a range since the merger-euporia-rally, and the high volume fall. From the arithmetic chart below, it is evident that a move eitherways in required. Currently sitting on previous support of $8.25 and the rising trendline, with the 200-day MA not far below, chances of a bounce here outweigh a decline - by a bit. I may go long here, with a suitable stop.

Upside targets: $8.70 initially, followed by $9.20
Downside support: 200-day MA initially, followed by $7.70

Remaining bearish on the long-term picture as well as the merger. All the best!

Singapore Exchange: Breaks Medium-term Uptrend

SGX breaks medium-term uptrendline, and also the 200-day MA. This is bearish action. Currently around $8.00 round number, and may offer a back-test of $8.25. Next significant support is coming in at $7.70. As SGX did not break downtrendline since my last post, no long position was taken. For those who did, i trust that stop-loss strategies were used!

SINGAPORE EXCHANGE - A A$7.3 billion ($7.1 billion) bid by the Singapore Exchange to take over its Australian rival Australian Securities Exchange is faltering as the Australian government, the regulator and a key opposition party are all set to reject it, the Sydney Morning Herald said.

Singapore Exchange, Asia's second largest listed bourse, rose as much as 3.6 percent after news reports said that its bid to take over Australia's ASX is faltering due to political opposition.

By the midday, SGX shares were traded 3.3 percent higher at S$7.56 with over 2.4 million shares changing hands.

"The majority of market players feel that if the deal doesn't go through then that's better, partly because of the pricing (of the deal)," said Seng Choon Leng, the head of research at DMG & Partners.

The $7.5 billion bid by the Singapore Exchange to take over its Australian rival is stalling as the Australian government, the regulator and a key opposition party are all set to reject it, the Sydney Morning Herald said on Saturday.

DJ MARKET TALK: SGX Offers Attractive Buying Opportunity - UBS
3/29/2011 9:26:00 AM

0125 GMT [Dow Jones] STOCK CALL: UBS says if SGX (S68.SG) fails to acquire ASX (ASX.AU), it will likely explore other options; "geographic and product diversity (derivatives) would be a priority."

It notes SGX's current price is discounting for the M&A and also reflects the recent lower trading turnover; "we view the current price as an attractive buying opportunity as we believe downside from here is limited while higher trading turnover can easily provide a catalyst for outperformance."

On potential targets, it says Asian exchanges would be preferred given their growth prospects but regulations in those countries might not be conducive for cross-border M&A; the house adds "Western exchanges fare poorly on growth and margin outlook but compelling valuations and product offerings may make them attractive," while a bid for SGX can't be ruled out as Western exchanges lack presence in Asia.

UBS cuts its 2011-13 EPS forecasts by 6%-9% to reflect lower ADT, and lowers its target to S$9.70 from S$10.50; but it keeps its Buy call. The stock is down 0.4% at S$7.75.

Australian Treasurer disposed to reject ASX-SGX merger proposal

Singapore Exchange (SGX) has today been notified by the Foreign Investment Review Board that the Australian Treasurer is disposed to reject the proposed merger between ASX and SGX as contrary to Australia’s national interest.

SGX has been invited to provide further comments to the Foreign Investment Review Board and will consider appropriate responses.

Asia will remain the world’s growth engine in the coming decades. SGX, as the Asian Gateway, is well-positioned to leverage on opportunities within Asia’s vibrant and dynamic economies. We will continue to pursue organic as well as other strategic growth opportunities, including further dialogue with ASX on other forms of co-operation.
