RESEARCH ALERT-JP Morgan raises DBS target to S$24 from S$18

SINGAPORE, Jan 19 (Reuters) - JP Morgan raised its target price for DBS Group to S$24 from S$18 and kept its overweight rating.

STATEMENT: JP Morgan said it expects the bank's low return on equity to reverse over the next three years and rise to 14 percent in 2013, from 9 percent in 2009.

DBS is on track to deliver 27 percent core earnings growth in 2010, and its net interest margin is also expected to increase this year due to a steeper yield curve, JP Morgan said in a report.

"We believe this time it's different for DBS M&A, as there appears to be greater clarity within top management that value-eroding transactions can lead to a multi-year stock de-rating," the brokerage said.

By 0248 GMT, DBS shares were up 0.8 percent at S$14.88 and have gained 3.9 percent so far this year.

DBS , Southeast Asia's biggest lender, may be in focus after it posted a better than expected 38 percent rise in quarterly profit on falling bad-debt charges and higher trading income.

Not vested. From Phillips:-

DBS ($14.94, FV$16.98) is 6.7% higher than when we added it to our top picks list on 18th Mar (S$14.00 vwap) as we believe that macro headwinds – rock bottom S$sibor due to a near zero US fed funds rate – are likely to recede as the year goes on and turn into tailwinds (fig.16).

From our US macro outlook, things are clearly getting better, and bond markets are signaling inflation ahead, both in the yield curve (fig.2) and in the nominalinflation protected spread (fig.17).

We think 4q11 or 1q12 could see the Fed hike rates finally. S$sibor should get a lift and NIMs would expand. DBS, currently trading below cycle valuations (unlike UOB, OCBC) of 1.3x p/b is likely to re-rate back to cycle average of 1.5x
p/b, which puts its at an unofficial target price of $18.19, 1.5x FY11 book (fig.18).

DBS is a chief beneficiary to a Fed-S$sibor hike as its funding base is the most insensitive to rising rates – an immovable mass of deposits from POSB. Add to this mix, what we think is also the investment-GDP ratio bottoming out in Singapore, and we think macro tailwinds are continuing to brew for DBS.

hahhah nice one. "Immovable mass"

I think CEO of POSB say, " Why should our books merg? My P&L very nice without you." :)

Singapore Hot Stocks-DBS falls after Q2 earnings hurt by trading income

SINGAPORE, July 28 (Reuters) - Shares of DBS , Southeast Asia's largest lender, fell as much as 1.3 percent on Thursday after it posted quarterly earnings that came in below some broker estimates, although it was slightly above consensus.

At 0130 GMT, shares of DBS were 0.9 percent lower at S$15.18 with 809,000 shares changing hands.

DBS said its second quarter net profit was S$735 million, slightly above Reuters consensus of S$728 million, helped by strong loan growth.

However, several brokers were concerned about DBS' weak trading income, which fell 43 percent on-quarter to S$146 million and offset its strong net interest income.

"We expect near term weakness in the stock," JPMorgan said in a report, but the brokearge expects a turnaround in the medium term as "core trends on margins, growth, liquidity and asset quality remain solid."

From 26 Jan to 28 July, this is the 4th attempt. But it has cleared it beautifully. Gupta's producing results.
