Green Packet hits daily upper limit on digital banking speculation

by Lai Ying Yi

May 18, 2020

KUALA LUMPUR (May 18): Shares in Green Packet Bhd continued its streak to fresh new multiple-year high in early trade today, gaining as much as 30 sen or 24.79% to RM1.51.

At 10.15am, the telecom counter hit its daily upper limit threshold of RM1.57 before slipping slightly to RM1.51, giving the company a total market capitalisation of RM1.42 billion.

At the time of writing, the counter saw some 38.19 million shares changed hands.

Meanwhile, its warrant was only up 4.3% or 2 sen to 48.5 sen, with 150.95 million units traded.

Shares of Green Packet have staged a strong rebound after dropping to a low of 42 sen on March 23. The counter is currently up 117% year-to-date.

The recent buying frenzy was sparked by a report that Green Packet is getting ready for digital banking.

The report was speculating that the group may well position itself into digital banking by venturing with China internet giant Tencent as its local partner for an e-KYC product.

Tencent owns WeBank, one of the top digital banks in China which had much success by largely deploying e-KYC solutions.

In an earlier announcement, Green Packet said its KipleID e-KYC will deploy Tencent’s patented solutions, which can assist banks and financial institutions to reduce costs by removing manual procedures.

Last week, the group had also launched the “We Are Ready” campaign by introducing its KipleLive proptech application, which aims to get Malaysian businesses to embrace new norms to cope with the Covid-19 pandemic.

The product integrates the AI facial recognition, cloud hosted services, FR thermal scanner, visitor management system, and cashless smart parking solutions.

Prior to this, Green Packet rolled out the “Warong Digital e-Baazar Ramadan” programme in collaboration with the Coalition of Malay Small Traders Association, which leverages the KiplePay e-wallet that allows cashless transactions.

Green Packet's Kiplepay awarded Visa principal issuing licence, joins Visa Fintech Fast Track programme

by Lai Ying Yi

KUALA LUMPUR (June 5): Green Packet Bhd's wholly-owned unit Kiplepay Sdn Bhd said it has secured a principal issuing licence by Visa and is now able to issue Visa prepaid cards.

In a statement, Kiplepay said it has also joined Visa's Fintech Fast Track programme, which is part of Visa's global strategy to open up its network and support a broad range of players that are developing new commerce experiences.

Visa country manager for Malaysia, Ng Kong Boon, said with Kiplepay coming on board, the firm can reach out to underserved segments in Malaysia, such as merchant and student communities, and create relevant payment solutions to enable the movement of funds seamlessly and securely.

"Once we issue a Visa prepaid card, we are able to leverage on Visa's global acceptance footprint. We're extremely excited to enable both online and offline payments using the 16-digit payment credential to our customers," Tan said.

"Kiplepay's vision has always been focused on powering the masses given we're a digital financial services platform provider. We have been driving an inclusive cashless agenda across different communities, from instant disbursement of funds for government aid/benefits to powering small merchants and student communities," he added.

The company also said it will work together with Visa to enhance its e-wallet offerings through a spectrum of features such as loyalty programmes, mobile discounts, peer-to-peer transfers and a personalised e-wallet, Kiplepay customers can make online and offline payments using a single app.

"The partnership with Visa will also enable e-wallet users and white label customers of Kiplepay to tie their e-wallet offerings with either a physical or virtual Visa card," said Tan.

On the development front, Kiplepay has previously partnered with Bank Islam to launch kipleUNI, a cashless payment ecosystem for universities in Malaysia. The mobile app also extends features such as loan disbursements and zakat payments for students.

Besides that, Kiplepay is one of the few fintech partners in Malaysia to facilitate fund disbursements under specific state welfare programmes and has launched a digital platform initiative with the Coalition of Malay Small Traders to help 20,000 merchants and bazaar traders resume their businesses during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Green Packet buys e-KYC firm in bid to be full-fledged digital bank

by Wong Ee Lin

KUALA LUMPUR (June 16): Set to offer a complete end-to-end solution to banks and financial institutions, Green Packet Bhd is buying Singapore-based e-KYC (Electronic Know Your Customer) specialist firm Xendity Pte Ltd for US$10 million.

With the acquisition, it will enable Green Packet to strengthen its digital identity verification services, a fast-growing sector as more organisations move towards their digital transformation.
This, in line, will reinforce Green Packet's position as the preferred partner for digital financial solutions for various industries in Malaysia including telecommunications and banking.

"The acquisition of Xendity forms a key part of our go market strategy with a solid e-KYC solution," said its group managing director and chief executive officer Puan Chan Cheong in a statement.

"Although they (Xendity) are a new start-up company of about three years, their track record, experience, and capabilities as a main solution provider in the regulated e-KYC and ID management space should be applauded," Puan noted, adding that Xendity's solutions will add significant scale to Green Packet's digital financial offerings.

E-KYC specialises in technologies on document verification, facial recognition and biometrics and typically only requires users to do so from their smartphones or personal computers remotely.

Last month, Green Packet announced a tie-up with Tencent Cloud to leverage on the latter's facial recognition and machine learning capabilities to build a localised e-KYC solution.

Green Packet will be paying US$10 million for a 100% stake in Xendity, with a combination of cash and shares and with performance-based tranches. It will initially pay US$1.5 million cash plus issue of new shares worth US$4 million.

Then, over the next two years, Green Packet will pay up to US$4.5 million via new shares and these payments will be based on Xendity meeting stipulated key performance targets.

Since 2018, Xendity has participated in Bank Negara Malaysia's e-KYC Financial Technology Regulatory Sandbox by working with seven leading banks in Malaysia. Now, Xendity has become the e-KYC provider in Malaysia with the largest deployment of its solutions in the local financial institutions market, said Green Packet.

Apart from Malaysia, Xendity is also making inroads into Indonesia, said Green Packet.

Other than its digital banking dream by building an ecosystem under the Kiple brand, Green Packet has also recently ventured into the proptech space, with a licence plate recognition technology, in conjunction with the launch of its flagship KipleLive solution under We Are Ready campaign.

Green Packet reports wider 1Q net loss on higher costs despite soaring international sales

by Syahirah Syed Jaafar

KUALA LUMPUR (June 30): Green Packet Bhd reported a net loss of RM34.07 million for the first quarter ended March 31, 2020 (1QFY20), much wider than the RM13.88 million net loss a year earlier, as a result of higher costs and a fair value adjustment on an investment during the period under review.

In a filing today, Green Packet said the higher loss was mainly due to the fair value adjustment provided for an investment as at March 31, 2020 of RM17.25 million, coupled with higher business development costs incurred for the digital services and communication retail business.

This was despite a 50% increase in revenue to RM147.05 million from RM97.94 million a year ago, on the back of higher sales across its business segments.

The group said its software and devices business registered 357% higher sales in the current quarter due to higher shipments to ASEAN, Europe, the Middle East and Latin America.

The digital services business recorded a higher revenue of 126% in the current quarter year-on-year mainly due to increased contributions from the new small and medium enterprise merchants.

Its communication services business also recorded a higher revenue of 41% in the current quarter thanks to a substantial increase in sales from telecommunication carriers in ASEAN, Hong Kong and China.

Despite the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, the board expects a better performance for the current financial year, said Green Packet, due to the progressive market response to the rapid digital connectivity of workplace safety processes by both the private and public sectors.
