Datasonic accepts RM32mil job

KUALA LUMPUR: Datasonic Group Bhd has accepted the letter of award from the Ministry of Home Affairs for a RM32.56mil contract.

In a statement to Bursa Malaysia on Monday, the group said the award is for the maintenance services for personalisation process at the National Registration Department of Malaysia for a period of two years, commencing from May 1 to 30 April 2017.

It said under the letter of award, Datasonic is required to furnish a performance bond for the amount of RM814,223.40 to the Ministry of Home Affairs, with validity period commencing from May 1, to 30 April 2018.

"The contract is expected to contribute positively towards the future earnings and net assets per share of Datasonic Group for the financial year ending March 31, 2016 and the financial years thereafter for the duration of the contract and will not have any effect on the share capital and substantial shareholders’ shareholdings of Datasonic Group," it said.

It added that the job is subject to normal business risks such as increase in cost due to any escalation of material costs and contractual terms including default provisions.

"As such, the management would put in place control measures and operational procedures to reduce the impact or likelihood of such events," it noted.

Datasonic targets 50% of payment card-renewal market

By Chester Tay

CYBERJAYA (July 29): Datasonic Group Bhd ( Financial Dashboard) is targeting to capture half of Malaysia's payment card-renewal market by end of 2016, a move which will see the electronic-identification specialist raising its card output.

Non-executive chairman General Tan Sri Dr Mohamed Hashim Mohd Ali said Datasonic (fundamental: 2.2; valuation: 0.9) planned to manufacture 10 million cards a year, from the current two to three million cards.

"The new way of doing business would enhance the security of payment cards, and we are ready for it, we have invested RM6 million for the facilities," Mohamed Hashim told reporters after Datasonic's annual general meeting here today.

Datasonic's move follows a directive from Bank Negara Malaysia.

Last year, Bank Negara issued a payment card reform framework that required banks to migrate the payment card system to a pin-based model, from the current signature-based scheme.

In recent days, Datasonic shares were closely watched, in anticipation the company would clinch a Malaysian government contract involving passport and ICT solutions.

Datasonic's share price movement had sparked Bursa Malaysia's query. Today, Mohamed Hashim said the authorities were still evaluating Datasonic's proposals.

He said Datasonic was confident as the proposals entailed the best pricing, besides quality services and products in the industry.

At 12:30pm, Datasonic shares rose three sen or 2.4% to settle at RM1.27, for a market capitalisation of RM1.71 billion.

The stock saw some four million shares done.

KUALA LUMPUR (Aug 28): Electronic-identification specialist Datasonic Group Bhd ( Financial Dashboard)'s net profit fell to RM12.36 million in the first quarter ended June 30, 2015 (1QFY16), from RM27.7 million a year earlier.

Revenue weakened to RM54.36 million, from RM71.56 million, Datasonic (fundamental: 2.2; valuation: 0.9) said in a filing with Bursa Malaysia today.

"The group's profit before taxation in the current financial quarter was lower on the basis of quarter on quarter comparison with that in the preceeding financial period, due to reduced revenue earned.

"RM48.93 million of the group's revenue in the current financial quarter is derived from the supply of smart cards, datapages, consumables and personalisation solution," Datasonic said.

Going forward, the group said unexpected changes in the currency exchange rates would have impact on operations.

"Nevertheless, the management is taking steps to minimise the impact of this. Barring this and any other unforeseen circumstances, the prospects for growth are expected to be satisfactory in the financial year ending March 31, 2016," it added.

At 12:30pm. shares in Datasonic rose two sen or 2% to settle at RM1.08, with 1.4 million shares traded.

The share price gives the company a market capitalisation of RM1.46 billion.
