Datasonic is not principal supplier of passports
It supplies polycarbonate data pages with chips to Government
PETALING JAYA: Datasonic Group Bhd said it is not the current principal supplier of the Malaysian passport booklets and chips to the Home Ministry but supplies polycarbonate data pages with chips to the Government.
The company said in a filing with Bursa Malaysia that it would only start supplying Malaysian passports chips and documents from Dec 1, 2016.
“Percetakan Keselamatan Nasional Sdn Bhd (PKN), a company privatised by the government-owned National Printing Department, has been given a six-month extension to supply 2 million passport booklets and chips from June 1, 2016 to Nov 30, 2016,” it said.
Datasonic said the passing rate of the chips after a 100% quality control by Trub AG Switzerland before shipment and a 100% incoming quality control by Datasonic and PKN is about 99.76%.
“Therefore, there is no issue on the quality of the chips. As of June 24, 2016, of the 523,940 units of the chips that had been delivered and verified by the main contractor before production, the rejection rate of chips is very small, only 0.24%,” Datasonic said.
“There is no such thing as a large number of chips delivered to the main contractor had been rejected due to defects,” it added.
According to an earlier letter of award, the supply from Datasonic will by from Dec 1, 2016 to Nov 30, 2021 that will involve 12.5 million passport chips and 13.41 million passport documents.
“Datasonic will be the new sub-contractor to PKN for the supply of 2 million chips that will be embedded into the polycarbonate data pages. First discussion on the terms and conditions and draft sub-contractor agreement by PKN has already started on July 29, 2016,” it said.
“If everything goes smoothly, the sub-contractor agreement between PKN and Datasonic for the supply of 2 million chips to PKN is expected to be signed and the necessary announcement will be made,” it added.
Datasonic said it had delivered 1.02 million units of polycarbonate data pages to PKN that consists of 121,000 thin polycarbonate data pages and 899,252 thick polycarbonate data pages with embedded chips from April to July 2016.
The average delivery for the last four months from April to July 2016 is 255,063 units.
While delivery in May 2016 is 149,662 units, which consist of 2,000 units of thin polycarbonate data pages and 147,662 units of thick polycarbonate data pages with embedded chips.
The delivery of polycarbonate data pages with chips to PKN in June and July 2016 are 369,916 and 277,124 units respectively.
