The untethered mind

The transformation of the world is brought about by the transformation of oneself, because the self is the product and a part of the total process of human existence.

To transform oneself, self-knowledge is essential; without knowing what you are, there is no basis for right thought, and without knowing yourself there cannot be transformation.

One must know oneself as one is, not as one wishes to be, which is merely an ideal and therefore fictitious, unreal; it is only that which is that can be transformed, not that which you wish to be.

To know oneself as one is requires an extraordinary alertness of mind, because what is is constantly undergoing transformation, change; and to follow it swiftly the mind must not be tethered to any particular dogma or belief, to any particular pattern of action.

If you would follow anything, it is no good being tethered. To know yourself, there must be the awareness, the alertness of mind in which there is freedom from all beliefs, from all idealization, because beliefs and ideals only give you a color, perverting true perception.

If you want to know what you are, you cannot imagine or have belief in something which you are not. If I am greedy, envious, violent, merely having an ideal of non-violence, of non-greed, is of little value....

The understanding of what you are, whatever it be—ugly or beautiful, wicked or mischievous—the understanding of what you are, without distortion, is the beginning of virtue. Virtue is essential, for it gives freedom.

What is true Self-Realization?

Though you do not see the roots or know how far, wide or deep they are clutching the earth, you pour water around the trunk so that it may reach the roots, is it not? You expect that when roots contact the water, the tree will grow and yield fruit.

Similarly, understand that there is the Divine, the very basis of creation; pray to Him, and He will shower fruits.

The chief means by which you detach your mind from distractions and attach yourselves to the search of Him, are communion with the Divine (Yoga) and sacrifice (Tyaga).

Desire (Karma) must be conquered by sacrifice (Tyaga) and the Divine must be secured by Communion (Yoga).

Desire discolours intelligence, perverts judgement and sharpens the appetites of the senses. It lends a false lure to the objective world.

When desire disappears or is concentrated on the Divine, intelligence is self-luminous, it shines in its pristine splendour, revealing Him within and everywhere. That is true Self-Realization.

- Divine Discourse, May 15, 1969.

Real peace of mind has no ups and downs; it cannot be partial in adversity and whole in prosperity.

Extraordinary seeing

So we are asking, as at the beginning, can the mind come to that extraordinary seeing, not from the periphery, from the outside, from the boundary, but come upon it without any seeking?

And to come upon it without seeking, is the only way to find it. Because in coming upon it unknowingly, there is no effort, no seeking, no experience; and there is the total denial of all the normal practices to come into that center, to that flowering.

So the mind is highly sharpened, highly awake, and is no longer dependent upon any experience to keep itself awake.

When one asks oneself, one may ask verbally; for most people, naturally, it must be verbal. And one has to realize that the word is not the thing—like the word “tree,” is not the tree, is not the actual fact.

The actual fact is when one touches it, not through the word but when one actually comes into contact with it. Then it is an actuality—which means the word has lost its power to mesmerize people.

For example, the word God is so loaded and it has mesmerized people so much that they will accept or deny, and function like a squirrel in a cage! So the word and the symbol must be set aside.

How can we ensure a life of peace and happiness?

More things, more hurdles, more handicaps.

Accumulation of sofas, chairs, cots, tables and curios, clutter the hall and render movements slow and risky.

Reduce wants and live simple, that is the key to happiness. Attachment brings sorrow in its wake!

When death demands that everything be left behind and everybody be deserted, you are overpowered with grief!

Be like the lotus on water; on it, not in it. Water is necessary for the lotus to grow, but it will not allow even a drop to wet it.

The objective world is the arena of virtue and the gymnasium for the spirit. Use it for that purpose only; do not raise it to a higher status!

Take up the simple Spiritual Practice of Namasmarana (Remembering the Divine), along with reverence towards parents, elders and teachers, and service to the sick and poor.

See everyone as your "chosen form of the Divine". That will fill your heart with love and give you stability of mind and peace.

- Divine Discourse, May 15, 1969.

Attachment is the result of illusion and it's the result of karma. It is desire that deludes and binds.

Why do we worship certain people, even after several centuries since His Avatarhood?

Truth and Righteousness, are the most important concepts in the Scriptures: “Speak the Truth; Act Righteously”.

Truth is the foundation for all righteousness. There is no greater religion than truth.

Everyone who calls themselves a human being, should stand up for truth in the same manner.

Noble ones are those whose actions, thoughts and words are in perfect accord.

Wicked people are those whose thoughts, words and deeds are at a variance with each other.

Therefore, such noble ones are worthy of adoration for time immemorial!

- Divine Discourse, Apr 14, 1989.

Thoughts of the Divine, Contemplation of Him, Grace of the Divine – these alone can confer the purity we need.

A powerful lesson so we may sanctify every new moment in our life

You must discharge duties ordained on you by the Divine and sanctify time.

Whatever actions we perform are the reflections of our inner thoughts and feelings. Hence, undertake such actions that provide happiness to you and everyone.

Due to the effect of Kali age, people do not work hard. Both educated and uneducated have become lethargic.

Today, people prefer to lead an easy life. Even students want to pass examinations without putting much effort. People want to secure jobs without working hard. After securing jobs, they want salaries without discharging their duties adequately. This type of attitude is not good.

It is said, hard work yields rich rewards. The rewards that you get will be commensurate with the efforts you put in.

Be duty conscious. Offer salutations to the action so that your efforts yield very good results, and work sincerely. Sanctify your life by performing righteous actions.

- Divine Discourse, Apr 15, 2003.

Self-confidence is born of confident action.

The central cause of conflict

Do not think by merely wishing for peace, you will have peace, when in your daily life of relationship you are aggressive, acquisitive, seeking psychological security here or in the hereafter.

You have to understand the central cause of conflict and sorrow and then dissolve it and not merely look to the outside for peace.

But you see, most of us are indolent. We are too lazy to take hold of ourselves and understand ourselves, and being lazy, which is really a form of conceit, we think others will solve this problem for us and give us peace, or that we should destroy the apparently few people that are causing wars.

When the individual is in conflict within himself he must inevitably create conflict without, and only he can bring about peace within himself and so in the world, for he is the world.

In the Indian calendar, this year is named ‘Vikari’ (Crooked)? What does it profess for us?

This year is named "vikari" (crooked)! So be warned!

Do not run after devious desires or crooked satisfactions. All roads leading to the realm of the senses are tortuous and blind; only the road that leads to the Divine is straight.

Cultivate the attitude of transparency and straightforwardness in everything. That will reveal the Inner Self.

Straightforwardness will enable you to overcome the impact of three qualities (gunas) on your mind. The treatment you have to give these qualities is to grind them to a paste so that a new taste of bliss (ananda) might emerge, just as you grind salt, chillies, and tamarind together to get a tasty chutney for your meal!

No single quality should dominate; all must be tamed and diverted to fill the lake of bliss in your heart, ananda.

How do you know you are successful in your effort? If your inner poise or inner equilibrium is undisturbed by external ups and downs, that is real success.

- Divine Discourse, Apr 12, 1959.

Command the mind, regulate your conduct, keep your heart straight and clear, then you will get the grace of the Divine.

The disorder that time creates

Time means moving from what is to “what should be.” I am afraid, but one day I shall be free of fear; therefore, time is necessary to be free of fear—at least, that is what we think.

To change from what is to “what should be” involves time. Now, time implies effort in that interval between what is and “what should be.”

I don’t like fear, and I am going to make an effort to understand, to analyze, to dissect it, or I am going to discover the cause of it, or I am going to escape totally from it.

All this implies effort—and effort is what we are used to. We are always in conflict between what is and “what should be.”

The “what I should be” is an idea, and the idea is fictitious, it is not “what I am,” which is the fact; and the “what I am” can be changed only when I understand the disorder that time creates.

... So, is it possible for me to be rid of fear totally, completely, on the instant? If I allow fear to continue, I will create disorder all the time; therefore, one sees that time is an element of disorder, not a means to be ultimately free of fear.

So there is no gradual process of getting rid of fear, just as there is no gradual process of getting rid of the poison of nationalism.

If you have nationalism and you say that eventually there will be the brotherhood of man, in the interval there are wars, there are hatreds, there is misery, there is all this appalling division between man and man; therefore, time is creating disorder.
