Drowned by influence

Why does the mind grow old? It is old, is it not, in the sense of getting decrepit, deteriorating, repeating itself, caught in habits, sexual habits, religious habits, job habits, or various habits of ambition.

The mind is so burdened with innumerable experiences and memories, so marred and scarred with sorrow, that it cannot see anything freshly but is always translating what it sees in terms of its own memories, conclusions, formulas, always quoting; it is authority-bound; it is an old mind.

You can see why it happens. All our education is merely the cultivation of memory; and there is this mass communication through journals, the radio, the television; there are the professors who read lectures and repeat the same thing over and over again until your brain soaks in what they have repeated, and you vomit it up in an examination and get your degree and go on with the process—the job, the routine, the incessant repetition.

Not only that, but there is also our own inward struggle of ambition with its frustrations, the competition not only for jobs but for God, wanting to be near Him, asking the quick road to him.

So, what is happening is that through pressure, through stress, through strain, our minds are being crowded, drowned by influence, by sorrow, consciously or unconsciously... We are wearing down the mind, not using it.

Putting aside screens

"How do you listen? Do you listen with your projections, through your projection, through your ambitions, desires, fears, anxieties, through hearing only what you want to hear, only what will be satisfactory, what will gratify, what will give comfort, what will for the moment alleviate your suffering?

If you listen through the screen of your desires, then you obviously listen to your own voice; you are listening to your own desires.

And is there any other form of listening? Is it not important to find out how to listen not only to what is being said but to everything to the noise in the streets, to the chatter of birds, to the noise of the tramcar, to the restless sea, to the voice of your husband, to your wife, to your friends, to the cry of a baby?

Listening has importance only when one is not projecting one’s own desires through which one listens. Can one put aside all these screens through which we listen, and really listen?"

We often claim certain areas as being ‘Developed’. What is true development?

Now, the only thing that is cheap is ‘man’! All else have gone up in value.

Human beings are the most defamed and most neglected.

When costly projects are planned and finished, when the area becomes rich and prosperous, the inevitable result is an unfortunate increase in crime and vice.

This is because there is no plan to build up the moral stamina of the human community, the project is intended to benefit!

The community can be really happy only if it has fine health, steady peace of mind and intelligence that is valued and directed to the service of others.

The recognition of the evanescence of the body and all things material must overrule the tendency towards pride and pomp, and check avarice and ambition.

- Divine Discourse, Mar 31, 1965.

Culture means giving up one's bad conduct, bad behaviour, bad deeds and cultivating
good thinking as well as fostering good sentiments that lead to good actions.

My domestic helper left her family for 30 years to work for mine. She never got to start her own.

A mind with problems is not a serious mind

One of the principal questions which one has to put to oneself is this: how far or to what depth can the mind penetrate into itself? That is the quality of seriousness because it implies awareness of the whole structure of one’s own psychological being, with its urges, its compulsions, its desire to fulfill and its frustrations, its miseries, strains and anxieties, its struggles, sorrows, and the innumerable problems that it has.

The mind that perpetually has problems is not a serious mind at all, but the mind that understands each problem as it arises and dissolves it immediately so that it is not carried over to the next day— such a mind is serious...

What are most of us interested in? If we have money, we turn to so-called spiritual things, or to intellectual amusements, or we discuss art, or take up painting to express ourselves.

If we have no money, our time is taken up day after day with earning it, and we are caught in that misery, in the endless routine and boredom of it.

Most of us are trained to function mechanically in some job, year in and year out. We have responsibilities, a wife and children to provide for, and caught up in this mad world we try to be serious, we try to become religious; we go to church, we join this religious organization or that—or perhaps we hear about these meetings and because we have holidays we turn up here. But none of that will bring about this extraordinary transformation of the mind.

Pure love for the Divine will dispel ignorance and conceit of man, as the Sun dispels the morning mist.

Escape breeds conflict

Why are we ambitious? Why do we want to succeed, to be somebody? Why do we struggle to be superior?

Why all this effort to assert oneself, whether directly, or through an ideology or the State? Is not this self-assertion the main cause of our conflict and confusion?

Without ambition, would we perish? Can we not physically survive without being ambitious? Why are we clever and ambitious?

Is not ambition an urge to avoid what is? Is not this cleverness really stupid, which is what we are?

Why are we so frightened of what is? What is the good of running away if whatever we are is always there?

We may succeed in escaping, but what we are is still there, breeding conflict and misery. Why are we so frightened of our loneliness, or our emptiness?

Any activity away from what is, is bound to bring sorrow and antagonism. Conflict is the denial of what is or the running away from what is; there is no conflict other than that.

Our conflict becomes more and more complex and insoluble because we do not face what is. There is no complexity in what is, but only in the many escapes that we seek.

What should be the essence of all our spiritual efforts?

This all-pervading Universal Consciousness is the highest consciousness, which encompasses all other levels of consciousness and is the basis for all of them.

That is the all-effective Will, the Super Divine life. It is omnipotent. There is nothing that is beyond its power.

It is the embodiment of all powers. It should be everyone's aim to strive to recognise this Supreme Principle.

There are some clearly defined methods for achieving this aim. One’s vision, which is now turned outward towards the phenomenal universe, should be turned inwards, towards the Indwelling Spirit.

One should manifest the Divine consciousness inherent in oneself. One should submit oneself to that consciousness as a spiritual discipline. This is called "Conscious Realisation of the Inner Divine."

- Divine Discourse, Feb 16, 1988.

All spiritual practice must be directed to the removal of the husk and the revelation of the kernel.

Why should we firmly believe in the presence of the Divine, within us and in everyone around us?

Take a lump of salt and drop it in water. The salt dissolves soon and disappears, though we know it exists in every drop. The lump cannot be found, but we know its presence by tasting the water.

Similarly, the Divine is present everywhere, though invisible. But, He can be known by the taste.
You are the taste, the Divine droplet. This is the Truth - ‘That thou Art’.

A tree has a trunk covered with bark and myriad roots to feed it and hold it firm. It has branches spreading in all directions, tapering into twigs. It has millions of leaves which breathe and borrow energy from the Sun. It fulfills itself by attracting bees to fertilise the flowers into seeds.

All this variety of colour, fragrance, taste, smell and softness, of strength, toughness and tenderness has emanated from one single seed. Similarly, all creation emanated from the Divine. This is the reality. Be firm in that faith.

- Divine Discourse, Jan 2, 1987.

Just as there is oil in the sesame seed, butter in milk, fragrance in flower, tasty juice in the fruit
and fire in wood, there is Divinity in the vast universe.
