Igniting the flame of self-awareness

If you find it difficult to be aware, then experiment with writing down every thought and feeling that arises throughout the day; write down your reactions of jealousy, envy, vanity, sensuality, the intentions behind your words, and so on.

Spend some time before breakfast in writing them down—which may necessitate going to bed earlier and putting aside some social affair.

If you write these things down whenever you can, and in the evening before sleeping look over all that you have written during the day, study and examine it without judgment, without condemnation, you will begin to discover the hidden causes of your thoughts and feelings, desires and words...

Now, the important thing in this is to study with free intelligence what you have written down, and in studying it you will become aware of your own state.

In the flame of self-awareness, of self-knowledge, the causes of conflict are discovered and consumed.

You should continue to write down your thoughts and feelings, intentions and reactions, not once or twice, but for a considerable number of days until you are able to be aware of them instantly...

Meditation is not only constant self-awareness, but constant abandonment of the self. Out of right thinking there is meditation, from which there comes the tranquility of wisdom; and in that serenity the highest is realized.

Writing down what one thinks and feels, one’s desires and reactions, brings about an inward awareness, the cooperation of the unconscious with the conscious, and this in turn leads to integration and understanding.

Beyond the noise of words

"Listening is an art not easily come by, but in it there is beauty and great understanding.

We listen with the various depths of our being, but our listening is always with a preconception or from a particular point of view.

We do not listen simply; there is always the intervening screen of our own thoughts, conclusions, and prejudices. ...

To listen there must be an inward quietness, a freedom from the strain of acquiring, a relaxed attention.

This alert yet passive state is able to hear what is beyond the verbal conclusion.

Words confuse; they are only the outward means of communication; but to commune beyond the noise of words, there must be in listening an alert passivity.

Those who love may listen; but it is extremely rare to find a listener. Most of us are after results, achieving goals; we are forever overcoming and conquering, and so there is no listening.

It is only in listening that one hears the song of the words."

Why should we practice living in the Divine’s presence wherever we are, whatever we do?

Take the Divine as your charioteer; He will steer you through the heaviest odds. He has no favourites or rivals. Like fire, He spreads warmth to all who are near Him. If you do not feel the warmth, do not blame Him: blame yourself that you are far from Him.

- Divine Discourse, Nov 23, 1964.

The conviction that the Divine is everywhere, watching everything and aware of everything
must keep you on the straight path of Spiritual Practices, through selfless service (seva) and study.

Your God is not God

A man who believes in God can never find God.

If you are open to reality, there can be no belief in reality. If you are open to the unknown, there can be no belief in it.

After all, belief is a form of self-protection, and only a petty mind can believe in God.

Look at the belief of the aviators during the war who said God was their companion as they were dropping bombs! So you believe in God when you kill, when you are exploiting people.

You worship God and go on ruthlessly extorting money, supporting the army—yet you say you believe in mercy, compassion, kindliness. ...

As long as belief exists, there can never be the unknown; you cannot think about the unknown, thought cannot measure it.

The mind is the product of the past, it is the result of yesterday, and can such a mind be open to the unknown? It can only project an image, but that projection is not real; so your god is not God—it is an image of your own making, an image of your own gratification.

There can be reality only when the mind understands the total process of itself and comes to an end.

When the mind is completely empty—only then is it capable of receiving the unknown. The mind is not purged until it understands the content of relationship—its relationship with property, with people—until it has established the right relationship with everything.

Until it understands the whole process of conflict in relationship, the mind cannot be free.

Only when the mind is wholly silent, completely inactive, not projecting, when it is not seeking and is utterly still—only then that which is eternal and timeless comes into being.

What is the goal of devotion and who are the best examples to follow in this path?

You must feel an inseparable affinity with the Divine, as inseparable as the wave and the sea.

You will have to follow the path of previous Masters. You are really of the same essence, the same taste, the same quality as the sea, though you have the name and form of the wave.

Butter, when in the milk, is immanent in it and has no separate name and form; but take it out and it has a name and form which makes it distinct from milk.

Ghee (clarified butter) too when liquid has no particular form, but when it hardens, it has a form.

So too Divine state when it assumes a form, it is Man.

- Divine Discourse, Oct 10, 1964.

Devotion calls for utilizing the mind, speech and body to worship the Divine.

Why should we, first and foremost, believe that we are truly divine?

Do not demean your talents; when you dive deep into yourselves, you can discover the source of all strength.

Millions of ants creeping over a rock, can carve a deep groove along their path. The minute feet of the ant have that power.

You might have seen how on the walls around the village wells, hollows are produced on granite slabs by the continuous placing of water pots! The pots are made of mud, but over the years they erase even the hardest granite and cause the hollows where they rest!

The embodiment of the Self within you, is not an insignificant embodiment. The Inner-Self is not anaemic!

It is a powerful dynamo, capable of generating enormous power. Your spiritual teacher shows you the goal but you must generate the power yourself, by your own spiritual effort.

- Divine Discourse, Nov 23, 1964.

Self-confidence is born of confident action.

What is the call to action from the Divine, to us today?

As you claim to be devotees, should you not strictly adhere to the path shown and make everyone happy?

When you follow the footsteps, you will certainly achieve sacred results and earn a good name.

Being devotees, give up selfishness and dedicate your lives for the welfare of the society.

You attain merit by serving others and commit sin by hurting them. This is the main principle of our culture.

When you help others, you will receive help tenfold. If you harm others, you will be put to harm ten times more.

Fill your lives with love. Stop criticizing others. Respect even those who hate you. Hatred is a bad quality. It will ruin you.

Hence, get rid of this evil. Love everyone. Help the poor and the needy to the extent possible.

- Divine Discourse, Apr 13, 2002.

Help Ever, Hurt Never. Love All, Serve All.

Freedom from the self

To free the mind from all conditioning, you must see the totality of it without thought. This is not a conundrum; experiment with it and you will see.

Do you ever see anything without thought? Have you ever listened, looked, without bringing in this whole process of reaction?

You will say that it is impossible to see without thought; you will say no mind can be unconditioned. When you say that, you have already blocked yourself by thought, for the fact is you do not know.

So can I look, can the mind be aware of its conditioning? I think it can. Please experiment.

Can you be aware that you are a Hindu, a Socialist, a Communist, this or that, just be aware without saying that it is right or wrong? Because it is such a difficult task just to see, we say it is impossible.

I say it is only when you are aware of this totality of your being without any reaction that the conditioning goes, totally, deeply—which is really the freedom from the self.

What is this life meant for? What must we never lose focus of?

You may have witnessed chariot festivals in pilgrimage centers. Huge temple chariots are gorgeously decorated with flags and festoons, stalwart bands of men draw them along the roads to the music of blowpipes and conches, and dancing groups and chanters precede it, adding to the exhilaration of the occasion.

Thousands crowd around the holy chariot. Their attention is naturally drawn towards the entertainment, but they feel happiest only when they fold their palms and bow before the Idol in the chariot. The rest is all subsidiary, even irrelevant.

So too in the process of life, body is the chariot, and the Inner Self (Atma) is the Idol installed therein.

Earning and spending, laughing and weeping, hurting and healing, and the various acrobatics in daily living are but subsidiary to the adoration of the Divine and the union with the Divine.

- Divine Discourse, Jan 13, 1969.

The individual who experiences the bliss of union with the Divine has the strength of a thousand elephants.
