Why is it that there is still unrest in the world in spite of all the material progress?

In all countries, the emphasis is on the standard of life, not on the quality of living. Once you turn towards the path of worldly happiness, you will be led on and on to greater and greater discontent, competition, pride and jealousy.

Just stop for a moment and examine your own experience; whether you are happier when you grow richer, and whether you get more peace as and when your wants are satisfied. Then you will bear witness to the truth that an improved standard of living is no guarantee of happiness.

Neither do education, the mastery of information or the acquisition of skills, guarantee mental equanimity.

As a matter of fact, everywhere you find the educated man more discontented and more competitive than the uneducated. So the re-establishment of righteousness (dharma), is the urgent need in all parts of the world today.

- Divine Discourse, Apr 23, 1961.

If there is righteousness in the heart, there will be beauty in character. If there is beauty in character, there will be harmony in the home.
