U.S. transgender "man" gives birth

LOS ANGELES - Thomas Beatie, who was born a woman but after surgery and hormone treatment lives as a man, has given birth to a girl at an Oregon hospital, People magazine reported on Thursday.

Beatie, 34, who kept female reproductive organs when he legally became a man 10 years ago, confirmed the birth to the magazine.

The baby, conceived through artificial insemination using donor sperm and Beatie's own eggs, was born on June 29 and Beatie and the baby are "healthy and doing well," People reported.

"The only thing different about me is that I can't breast-feed my baby. But a lot of mothers don't," People quoted Beatie as saying. He has had his breasts surgically removed.

He told the magazine that contrary to published reports, the baby was not delivered by Caesarean section, but no other details about the birth were given.

The thinly bearded Beatie told "The Oprah Winfrey Show" in April he began his sexual transformation about 10 years ago when he began taking testosterone treatment and had surgery to remove mammary glands and flatten his chest.

Upon deciding to have a child about two years ago, he halted his bimonthly hormone injections and resumed menstruating.

Beatie's wife, Nancy, 46, whom he married five years ago, was unable to conceive because of a prior hysterectomy. Otherwise, he has said, "I wouldn't be doing this." His spouse has two grown daughters by a previous marriage.

She said on Oprah's show their parental roles would be fairly traditional despite his transgender status. "He's going to be the father, and I'm going to be the mother," she said.

The couple, who operate a T-shirt printing business in Bend, Oregon, are legally married and he is recognized under Oregon state law as a man.

Romanian doctor ordered to pay compensation after surgery-gone-wrong

BUCHAREST, Romania - A court has ordered a Romanian surgeon to pay $795,000 in compensation to a patient whose penis he accidentally severed during an operation.

In July 2004, Dr. Naum Ciomu made a surgical error while operating on the man's testicles, severing the penis instead of making an incision to the testicle.

The Bucharest Magistrates Court ruled Friday that Ciomu had been "superficial" in his approach to the operation, ordered the fine and handed Ciomu a one-year suspended prison sentence. The ruling can be appealed.

A piece of muscle from the man's arm has now been attached to where his penis was, but its function is aesthetic.

"You don't have to be an expert to realize that the 33-year-old victim does not have a good state of mind," said Mihai Olariu, the victim's lawyer.

Singapore - The Advertising Standards Authority of Singapore (ASAS) has recently updated its Singapore Code of Advertising Practice to include, among others, new guidelines on condom advertisements prohibiting ads focusing on the pleasure-enhancing aspect of the product.

ASAS stated condom ads should "focus on the protective function" and added the work should be made in good taste, and not promote promiscuity or include "superlative" claims. Had the new restrictions been in place last September then the much-talked about Durex 'Play' campaign, developed by Ogilvy Redcard, would have violated these new restrictions. The eye-catching campaign featured several of the brand's products made up to look like a couple having sex in various creative positions. The campaign aimed to position Durex as an enhancement to sexual pleasure.

Commenting on the new guidelines, Ogilvy Redcard ECD, Paul Anderson said "Advertising guidelines are like tax and death, there is no way to avoid them; and they exist for valid reasons." "The latest advertising guidelines for condom advertising does indeed pose a new set of challenges for the creatives creating work for this category but overcoming challenges, working within constraints are also very much part and parcel of a creative's career," he said.

He added, "It is important guidelines reflect the actual climate of the society, and not merely set in place so that the issue is ‘addressed'. The context of the matter should also be taken into consideration. In this case for example, perhaps a more definitive guideline at where the ad is running - in an appropriate publication such as FHM versus a poster near a school".

Brothel offers customers gas rebate

NEW YORK (Reuters) - A Nevada brothel is trying to stimulate business by offering free gasoline.

Clients of the Shady Lady Ranch will get a $50 gas voucher if they fork out $300 -- worth about one hour's worth of services -- at the brothel in Beatty, Nevada, 130 miles northwest of Las Vegas.

Owner James Davis said he already has had to order another $1,000 set of gas vouchers because the first $1,000 were spent in one week.

"It's rocking along. We're doing quite well. June and July historically are not big months," said Davis, who is co-owner of the brothel along with his wife Bobbi, in a telephone interview.

The $50 rebate would roughly cover the cost of a round trip drive from Las Vegas to the ranch.

Davis said business at the ranch, which has been operating for 16 years, generally slows in the early summer. He said the brothel regularly offers specials to lure clients and his wife came up with the gas vouchers for this month.

U.S. gasoline prices hit a record $4.08 a gallon last week, up 38 percent from a year ago.

Brothels, illegal in most U.S. states, are legal in parts of Nevada.

Graft prosecutor gets life for torture death

BEIJING (Reuters) - A Chinese court has jailed a former anti-graft prosecutor for life for torturing a suspect to death, while his superior was sentenced to seven years in prison for trying to cover up the case, local media said on Wednesday.

The Nanjing Intermediate People's Court handed down the sentence to Xiong Zhengliang, once the top corruption prosecutor in Ganyu county in the eastern province of Jiangsu, Tuesday, the Beijing News said.

Another two law enforcement officials involved in the torture were sentenced to 15 and 10 years in jail respectively, the newspaper said.

The victim, Liang Jiping, was a deputy director of the county's electricity bureau before his detention in May 2007 on suspicion of taking bribes, it said.

"In order to get a confession of guilt, the three deprived Liang of sleep and beat him," the Beijing News quoted the Nanjing court as saying.

Liang died on June 1 2007, after being held in custody for nearly five days and in three separate places, it said.

Gao Jiajin, Xiong's direct superior, was imprisoned for seven years for attempting to conceal the torture from investigators.

"He fabricated false facts that the wounds on Liang's body were only inflicted when interrogators tried to prevent him from escaping or committing suicide," the court was quoted as saying.

Gao also ordered the destruction of instruments used in the torture and threatened people with knowledge of the case to keep quiet, the court said.

Liang's wife had asked Nanjing prosecutors to appeal the "overly light" sentences, the Beijing News said.

The case, unlike many other torture incidents in China, has been fairly widely publicized by Chinese media.

China has vowed to stamp out torture in its judicial system, described as widespread by some critics, in the face of international and domestic pressure.
