Dairy firm knew of toxic milk for months: State media

The Chinese company whose tainted baby milk triggered a food safety crisis that has seen 53,000 children fall ill failed to report complaints about the product for months, state media said.

Sanlu Group, the dairy firm first found to be selling melamine-contaminated goods, began receiving complaints of sick children as early as last December, state television said, citing a Cabinet probe.

It also said Communist officials in the north Chinese city of Shijiazhuang, where Sanlu is based, delayed referring the matter to higher authorities for more than a month after Sanlu finally told them of the problem on August 2.

Mad Human Disease by Jenny Thompson

I think we may have stumbled upon some form of mad human disease.

Here's how events unfolded…

Creekstone, a Kansas meat packing company, begins testing its cattle for mad cow disease in order to reassure nervous Japanese customers that the animals are disease-free.

But the USDA steps in and orders Creekstone to stop testing. The reasoning: The company had no scientific justification to test their relatively young animals when only older cattle develop mad cow disease.

Well it's a free country, right? If meat packer wants to test the animals he owns, that's his prerogative, right?

So Creekstone sues the USDA. And they win.

Then the USDA appeals.

A few days ago, a U.S. Court of Appeals overturned the lower court's ruling.

And here's where legal logic gets deeply twisted. In the original ruling, a federal judge stated that the USDA can only regulate disease treatment, and mad cow testing is not a treatment because it can only be performed on dead animals. Seems pretty clear. But the Court of Appeals ruling states that diagnosis can be considered part of treatment. On a dead animal!

The diagnosis here is pretty obvious: mad human disease.

Phone distraction leads to surgical blunder

A patient has been mistakenly implanted with a special intraocular lens after the surgeon was distracted by a phone conversation, according to the Hospital Authority.

The lens was intended for another patient.

According to the authority's latest issue of Risk Alert, the medical blunder happened when the surgeon was distracted by a phone call when reviewing the patient's medical record.

A nurse presented the wrong lens to him.

The nurse later discovered the blunder after she found out the lens intended for the following patient had been implanted.

In a separate blunder, a nurse had mislabeled the blood specimens of two patients, leading to unnecessary blood transfusion to one of them.

Planes circle isle after controller overslept

ATHENS (Reuters) - Two airplanes due to land on the Greek island of Lesbos had to circle above the Aegean sea for more than half an hour because an air traffic controller overslept, police said Monday.

An Olympic Airlines aircraft, arriving from the Greek capital Athens, and a Slovakian Airlines plane made several failed attempts to contact control tower personnel.

"They were calling the tower to get directions, but no one would answer," a police official, who declined to be named, told Reuters. "The woman later said she overslept."

The airport's secondary control service assisted the pilots to land after they had circled for 40 minutes. Police said the controller, who was not named, would be suspended for a few days.

Just the other day we have an article on pilots that sleep through the flight.

Now, we have air traffic controller that overslept.
1. Always wait for the setup. NO SETUP; NO TRADE

2. The trend will END but I don't know WHEN.

Van too compact to carry bounty

Two armed robbers hijacked a security van with £650,000 inside in Malaysia but were forced to abandon more than half the cash because their small getaway car could not carry it all.

The van was found with nine bags containing about £300,000 inside - evidently because they did not fit in the compact car, a police spokesman said.

"The bags are quite big. I consider them quite stupid. Their planning was very short-sighted," he added.

Over 100 sick in China as too many cooks spoil broth

BEIJING (Reuters) - Some 170 wedding banquet guests were rushed to hospital in north China when powdered rust remover was added to the pot instead of salt after they all decided it needed added flavor, Chinese media said.

In a bizarre coincidence, 61 wedding guests were taken to hospital with similar symptoms a day earlier after a duck-and-donkey-meat banquet in northwest China.

In the rust remover case, the bride's proud father invited 170 friends and relatives to the wedding banquet at a village in northern Hebei province on Friday, the night before the nuptials, the Beijing News said.

"All food was stewed in a big pot but after dinner started, all of them felt the taste was too bland," the newspaper said.

Someone added what he or she thought was salt -- several times. An hour later, the guests were being rushed to hospital.

"When I arrived at the hospital, the observation room was packed with people vomiting, with stomach pains and with diarrhea," a doctor was quoted as saying.

The symptoms were short-lived and all the victims were released by the next day.

A day earlier, 61 wedding guests suffered food poisoning at a banquet in impoverished Gansu province, local authorities said.

"Currently, 17 people have been discharged but 44 are still in the hospital. No one has died," Xinhua news agency quoted an official as saying.

Duck, donkey meat, chicken and shrimp were the main dishes served at the dinner.

China has been hit by a series of food-safety scares in recent years, most recently when thousands of infants fell sick from contaminated milk powder. At least four died.
