Sodium: Stop worrying about this dangerous health myth by Dr. David Eifrig

The FDA is force-feeding us a dangerous health myth again… The Food and Drug Administration will soon have voluntary guidelines asking food companies and restaurants to lower the sodium levels in food. According to FDA Commissioner Margaret Hamburg, “the current level of consumption [of sodium] really is higher than it should be for health.”

Longtime Retirement Millionaire readers know to ignore this sort of misinformation. As I’ve written before, sodium is only bad for you in extreme amounts… whether you’re having too little or too much. I recently spoke to a woman who told me her blood pressure was low… She drinks plenty of fluid but has little salt in her diet. I told her to increase her salt intake to reduce her symptoms. It worked immediately.

What’s even more important than worrying about sodium intake is making sure you’re getting enough magnesium and potassium (two other essential salts). Magnesium helps with mood, energy, and mental stability. Low potassium levels are more likely to increase blood pressure than high levels of sodium are.

If you’re eating a diet filled with whole fruits and green vegetables and avoiding fast food and processed foods, it’s likely your sodium levels are just fine. So stop worrying about sodium and focus on getting plenty of magnesium and potassium.

Do what I do… Add a little spinach to your salad. The leafy green is high in both potassium and magnesium.

Earwax

You know that old cliché about never putting anything smaller than your elbow in your ear?

Well it's silly, of course, but it gets the point across. You can really damage your hearing by poking swabs, fingers and tissue into your ear.

That's all because of cerumen. You've probably never heard of it...it's more commonly known as earwax.

That's something you may regard as an unwanted annoyance. But it's actually there to protect your eardrum from dust and dirt, and to keep your ear canal clean.

And one of the worst things you can do is to try to remove it with a cotton swab or Q-Tip.

That advice comes straight from the hearing committee of the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery.

Once dried, earwax will work its way out of the opening of your ear by itself. That happens whenever you use your jaw to chew or talk, according to Dr. Douglas Backous, the committee's chairman.

But sticking a swab in your ear only pushes the wax deeper inside, where it gets stuck and can affect your hearing, he warns.

Doing that also brings along fungus, bacteria and viruses that ear wax would ordinarily remove and which can cause the ear to become infected. Impacted wax can even cause a painful rupture of the eardrum.

If you think your ears do need cleaning -- because excessive wax buildup seems to be blocking them -- it should only be done by a medical professional, the group warns.

If your ears seem merely irritated or dried out, it may be a result of your attempts to clean them, which Backous compares to scratching a mosquito bite.

In that case, he suggests a few drops of a mixture of one part white vinegar, one part rubbing alcohol and one part lukewarm tap water be applied in each ear.

Erectile Dysfunction

We've all seen those ads for drugs for ED or "erectile dysfunction" more times than we can count. But a new study from Down Under has shown that a few basic lifestyle changes might work just as well without risking those nasty side effects.

That's what Aussie researchers found when they tracked over 800 men from 35 to 80 years old. During a five-year period, nearly a third of them developed some form of the condition.

"The good news is, our study also found that a large proportion of men were naturally overcoming erectile dysfunction issues," said Professor Gary Witter of the University of Adelaide, where the study was done.

That means some things can be done to reverse the causes without drugs. Things like losing weight, eating better, exercising more, and getting a better night's sleep.

Doing these things, said the study's lead author, might not only help preserve your passion, but improve your heart health and reduce the risk of diabetes.

So before going for that Viagra Rx, you might try going to bed earlier, ditching the pizza in front of the TV for a real dinner and slimming down those "love handles."

That may do a lot more for your love life than risking "sudden decrease or loss" of vision and hearing.

Off-color truths in chase for so-white teeth

Many dentists have patients with problems caused by do-it-yourself tooth-whitening products.

A July 15-21 survey by the University of Hong Kong took in 233 dentists, and 62 percent said they had patients with tooth and gum problems.

Nearly 95 percent of patients used whitening toothpaste, 74 percent Whitestrips and 32 percent whitening dentifrice and bleach.

Seventy-six percent of dentists also said patients had too high expectations of whitening products and procedures.

Of them, 69 percent had patients asking for help to have super-white teeth. About 11 percent pushed dentists for more whitening treatment even after being cautioned it could cause damage.

A specialist in periodontology who was not involved in the research, Clive Fung Kin-yue, said an increasing number of people want gleaming white teeth because they see celebrities and stars flashing perfect smiles.

But products commercials with white teeth reflecting light are either Photoshopped or use braces, he said, and the only effective ways to whiten teeth are treatment at dental clinics and using correct toothpaste with chemicals or abrasive substances.

Some people, Fung noted, had started tooth-whitening efforts while still studying so they could make good impressions during job interviews.

Also, Fung said, it is inevitable that teeth change color as people grow older. Other reasons are decay, taking tetracycline for a long time, smoking, and drinks such as tea and coffee.

Countering problems includes less dark-colored drinks, flushing teeth with water after eating and drinking, and using the right brushes and paste.

New research suggests this food could stop heart disease in its tracks By Dr. David Eifrig

According to Newsmax, researchers at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center found garlic extract stops (and in some cases, reverses) plaque buildup in arteries.

Plaque buildup leads to atherosclerosis – known as the hardening of the arteries, which increases your risk of heart attack or stroke.

Researchers studied 72 patients who had a blockage in at least one cardiac artery. Half of the patients took two 1,200-milligram doses of aged garlic extract supplements daily. The other half took a placebo.

The people who took the garlic saw the plaque buildup lessen, while it got worse in patients taking the placebo.

Regular readers know I’m often skeptical regarding the use of supplements, thanks to the unregulated industry and companies selling “cure-alls.” So I need to look into the safety of this supplement. Because you get a large amount of garlic in a supplement, the pills could interact with blood-thinning medications and anti-inflammatory drugs like Warfarin and Advil.

In the meantime, if you’re looking to take advantage of garlic’s numerous health benefits – like its anti-inflammatory properties – try to eat half a clove per day. I like to dice it up and add it to my salads or potatoes. And when I’m in New York City, I always order a slice of pizza with fresh garlic after a jog in Central Park.

Drinking This Before Bed Can Ruin Your Sleep

A nightcap before bed sounds like a great idea. Afterall, alcohol is a proven sedative.

However, research has found that consuming alcohol before bed shows many negative side effects on your Zzz.

As our bodies metabolize alcohol at night, there are several instances in which you will be woken up. Reducing the overall quantity of your sleep.

And if you're lucky enough to sleep through the night with no interruptions, alcohol has shown to lighten sleep and suppress REM cycles (deep sleep), says Dr. Russell Rosenberg. Reducing the overall quality of your sleep.

Prostrate Cancer

While we're on the topic of PSA testing, there's something else.

Almost half of the men who do have prostate cancer have slow-growing kinds that are not deadly.

The treatments, on the other hand, are a different story.

After a positive PSA, well, then comes the biopsy. After that there can be surgery and radiation -- things that do come with serious side effects that can be deadly.

And then there's that high-tech method called "robotic surgery," also known as the da Vinci system.

Dr. Richard Ablin, who discovered the prostate-specific antigen called PSA, says, "Robotic surgery is a train that is ready to come off the tracks."

He said that when the FDA approved that method of prostate surgery, there were no real studies to back up its safety or effectiveness.

"The basis of that approval," he said, "was the cystectomy (removal) of pig bladders."

"We're seeing the results now," said Dr. Ablin, "which have been disastrous in many cases."

The machine that does this "robotic prostatectomy" cost $2 million, he said. And then hospitals are also required to have a contract that cost another $100,000.

And while the FDA is said to be currently investigating injuries and deaths related to robotic surgeries, even at the high price tag, there are now over 2,000 of these da Vinci machines in hospitals around the country.

And you know that the FDA is not going to pull back machines that have already been bought and paid for to the tune of a few million.

Now, most experts agree that prostate cancer is essentially "an age-related disease."

And one, they say, that is rarely aggressive.

So it's hardly necessary to call out the big guns. Or the "Star Wars" style surgery that's sounding more and more risky every day.

Do without this surgery if you can.
