Japan Withdraws HPV Vaccine Recommendation for Girls

The Japanese government withdrew its recommendation to use human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccines in girls last week, citing concerns from the public about adverse effects, according to news reports.

The announcement is in stark contrast to the pronouncement last week by health officials in the United States that vaccination rates in teenage girls should be increased after a study concluded that estimated vaccine effectiveness is “high.”

The Japanese Ministry of Health, Labor, and Welfare is not suspending vaccination, but has instructed local governments not to promote the use of the medicine while analyses are conducted about adverse effects, such as long-term pain and numbness, according to the Japanese newspaper The Asahi Shimbun.

“The decision does not mean that the vaccine itself is problematic from the viewpoint of safety,” said Mariko Momoi, who heads a ministry task force looking into the controversy and is a vice president of the International University of Health and Welfare in O-tawara, Tochigi, Japan. “By implementing investigations, we want to offer information that can make the people feel more at ease.”

According to a report in the Japan Times, 8.29 million people had received the HPV vaccine as of December 2012, and there were 1968 cases of concerning adverse events reported as of March 2013. Of these adverse events, 106 were described as “serious cases of pains or body convulsions, pains in joints, or difficulty in walking.”

Omega-3 acids linked to child allergies, prostate risk

AFP - Omega-3 fatty acids, often taken to boost health, appear to increase the risk of childhood allergies and prostate cancer, according to two studies unveiled on Thursday.

Newborns with high levels of unsaturated fats in their blood were more prone to develop an allergy than those with lower blood concentrations, according to a probe by three Swedish universities.

"It is already known that unsaturated fatty acids inhibit activation of the immune system. This can be useful when you are old," Agnes Wold, a physician at the clinical microbiology department of Gothenburg's Sahlgrenska University Hospital, said in a statement.

"But the baby's immune system needs to get a kick start, otherwise it does not develop properly," she said.

Previous research has indicated that children who at an early age were given fish, which is famously high in omega-3 fatty acids, were less likely to get an allergy.

Another author of the study, food science professor Ann-Sofie Sandberg, cautioned against avoiding fish on the basis of these findings.

"Fish is so much more than just omega-3 fatty acids. One cannot conclude from our study that pregnant women and young children should not eat fish," she said.

Separately, a large study published in Britain's Journal of the National Cancer Institute found that three omega-3 fatty acids were associated with an increase of between 43 and 71 percent in the risk of developing prostate cancer.

The biggest increase in risk was for so-called high-grade prostate cancer, whose tumours are more likely to be fatal.

The study, led by scientists at the US Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, amplifies previous findings in 2011 that suggested these fatty acids play an unexplained role in initiating prostate cancer.

"Recommendations to increase ... (omega-3) intake, in particular through supplementation, should consider its potential risks," said the paper.

In May, an Italian-led study showed that fish oil supplements rich in omega-3 fatty acids were not beneficial for patients at high risk of cardiovascular troubles and already under medication.

Previous clinical trials had suggested the supplements could reduce cardiovascular risks for patients suffering from cardiovascular disease or who had already suffered cardiac arrest.

"Eating for health and weight control isn't complicated.

In fact, one of the most beneficial techniques for your health is to simply take a break from eating every once in a while.

It doesn't get any simpler than this."

Mediterranean Diet

Fresh fruits and vegetables. Olive oil. Fish. Red wine. You probably recognize these items as components of the Mediterranean diet.

During WW II, physiologist Ancel Keys realized that this simple cuisine reduced heart disease risk.

But the local Italians didn't make these dietary choices for their health. They made the choices because they were poor.

Two generations later, ironically, the poor can't afford those foods. They're more likely to wash down a cheap burger with a soft drink. And as you might suspect, this dietary choice is popular with the young, whether they happen to be poor or wealthy.

This "American" diet is also known as the industrial global diet. And 70 years after Keys made the heart disease connection, a modern-day Keys would make the same connection in reverse.

Heart disease rates are up. Obesity rates are up. Type 2 diabetes rates are up. And dietary choices are primarily driving those numbers.

It's sad. In fact, it's tragic. The Mediterranean diet is disappearing in the Mediterranean.

Also disappearing -- robust Mediterranean health.

These popular drugs are more dangerous than you've been told by Dr. David Eifrig

Statins are some of the best-selling drugs in the U.S. Drugmakers rake in billions of dollars from the more than 100 million prescriptions written each year. Statins are believed to lower cholesterol and reduce inflammation. But they also have dangerous side effects...

A study published this month in JAMA Internal Medicine ties statin use to muscle weakness, muscle cramps, and tendon problems. People who used statins had a 13% higher risk of dislocations or sprains and a 19% higher risk of musculoskeletal problems.

I've warned subscribers about the dangers of statins for years... Statins also raise blood sugar, increasing the risk for diabetes. And last year, the FDA added a new warning to statins concerning memory loss.

Instead, eating foods like fish and broccoli lower your cholesterol and reduce inflammation without drugs. Get rid of white, processed foods like white bread and refined sugar.

And do what I do... and get moving. Losing just a few pounds lowers your cholesterol while avoiding the risks and expense from costly or dangerous pills.

Stretching

Stretching is the most overlooked, but the most important factor of exercising. Stretching helps prevent muscle pulls and tears.

The following are tips to keep in mind for stretching right. Run or walk on a treadmill, or ride a stationary bike to warm up your muscles before stretching. Then, stretch all the basic muscle groups, including arms, buttocks, abs, neck, shoulders, legs, hips, and back.

Hold each stretch for at least 30 seconds with a soft amount of tension. Do not bounce in a stretch!

When stretching your muscle groups, you should not feel any pain.

After you have finished your cardiovascular or strength-building exercise, be sure to stretch out again as part of your cool-down.

Cancer alert on stir-fry vegetables by Lorraine Ho

Beware - stir-fried vegetables may contain cancer agents.

The warning comes as the Centre for Food Safety widens its studies on the cancer-causing contaminant acrylamide.

The center says most studies understandably concentrated on foods like potatoes, biscuits and breakfast cereal given that acrylamide forms in high levels during frying or baking.

"Our previous studies focused on food products reported to have a higher acrylamide content," food safety officer Xiao Ying said.

"But this was too limited a view and so we have re-examined the issue to get a more accurate estimate of exposure to acrylamide from the whole diet."

Vegetables with relatively high acrylamide levels when stir-fried include zucchini, water spinach and onions, while Chinese lettuce, Chinese spinach, spinach and watercress do not see similar spikes in levels during the same process.

The longer the vegetables are fried, and the higher the temperature at which they are cooked, the more acrylamide is formed.

To avoid too much acrylamide forming, community medicine consultant Ho Yuk-yin suggested the vegetables be blanched for one minute before frying.

Beside its potential for causing cancer, acrylamide is toxic to the nervous system in high doses.

In 2010, the Environmental Protection Agency in the United States set the reference dose for intake of acrylamide at 0.002 milligrams per kilogram of body weight per day, which can be predicted to produce no noticeable health effects.

In terms of dietary exposure, the level in Hong Kong is slightly lower than that in the mainland.

The local average is about 0.00021 milligrams of acrylamide per kilogram of body weight against the latter's 0.000286.

Sleep Apnea

Chronic Sleep Apnea is a condition in which one actually quits breathing for short episodes during sleep.

The condition is easily diagnosed by doctors trained in sleep disorders, by simply going to a sleep clinic.

Some signs and symptoms include; loud snoring with moments of complete silence; a “snorting” sound with abrupt wakening; feeling exhausted even after you have slept for several hours; lack of concentration; and even falling asleep during the day while driving or on the job.

This condition can be life threatening and is treatable.

For more information check with your family doctor and you may check out the National Sleep Foundation WebPages at: http://www.sleepfoundation.org/

Western Diet

You might be eating a Western diet if you get caught in the rain and use an empty pizza box for an umbrella.

You might be eating a Western diet if you drink strawberry milk with your chicken nuggets.

You might be eating a Western diet if the phrases "pizza box" and "chicken nuggets" make you crave a beer.

A study identifies these key elements of a Western diet... Processed or fried foods, refined grains, sugary products, and beer.

For women who eat like this for a decade or more, we can add this...

You might be eating a Western diet if you're depressed or anxious.

Researchers compared psychiatric reports to dietary details from more than 1,000 women. They found that depression and anxiety disorders were far more commonplace among women who followed a Western diet for at least 10 years.

They also found depression and anxiety to be less likely in women whose diets included more vegetables, fruit, meat, and fish.

And, of course, when we women are depressed, we are that much more likely to grab a pint of Ben & Jerry's or French fries. Creating a vicious cycle that puts a whole new spin on "you are what you eat."
