Doctors warn of rash from mobile phone use

LONDON (Reuters) - Doctors baffled by an unexplained rash on people's ears or cheeks should be on alert for a skin allergy caused by too much mobile phone use, the British Association of Dermatologists said on Thursday.

Citing published studies, the group said a red or itchy rash, known as "mobile phone dermatitis," affects people who develop an allergic reaction to the nickel surface on mobile phones after spending long periods of time on the devices.

"It is worth doctors bearing this condition in mind if they see a patient with a rash on the cheek or ear that cannot otherwise be explained," it said.

The British group said many doctors were unaware mobile phones could cause the condition.

Safety concerns over mobile phones has grown as more people rely on them for everyday communication, although the evidence to date has given the technology a clean bill of health when it comes to serious conditions like brain cancer.

"In mobile phone dermatitis, the rash would typically occur on the cheek or ear, depending on where the metal part of the phone comes into contact with the skin," the group said in a statement.

"In theory it could even occur on the fingers if you spend a lot of time texting on metal menu buttons."

Nickel is a metal found in products, ranging from mobile phones to jewelry to belt buckles and is one of the most common causes of allergic contact dermatitis, according to the Mayo Clinic in the United States.

Earlier this year Lionel Bercovitch of Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island and colleagues tested 22 popular handsets from eight different manufacturers and found nickel in 10 of the devices.

Malaysia recalls melamine-tainted biscuits

Malaysia ordered two local biscuit manufacturers to remove their products from store shelves after the discovery of baked goods that contained excessive quantities of melamine, the Health Ministry said.

The ministry also banned ammonium bicarbonate made in China after melamine in the Khong Guan and Khian Guan biscuit brands was traced back to the baking agent.

Japan finds melamine in China-made egg powder

A Japanese company said the toxic chemical melamine was found in dried egg powder imported from China as a scandal over tainted milk that has sickened thousands of babies keeps growing.

Japan's leading trading firm Mitsui said late Thursday that the company has recalled egg powder after detecting a small amount of melamine inside it.

Egg powder is often used to flavour pastries, cooked pasta and confectionery products.

Mitsui imported 20 tonnes of Chinese egg powder in September, most of which was sold to QP Egg Corp, a unit of Japanese mayonnaise maker QP Corp., the company said.

Some 0.4 tonnes of egg powder have already been consumed, it said, but no health problems have been reported.

Man 'caught in the' act at MTR station

A 24-year-old man was apprehended by police for allegedly trying to take a photograph of a female MTR passenger in a skirt at Admiralty station this morning.

The man had apparently put his camera-equipped cellphone underneath the woman as she stood on an ascending escalator.

The woman sensed a flash and she along with other witnesses called the police who apprehended the man.

The man was arrested for loitering. He is detained and his cell phone was taken away for investigation.

Hong Kong finds melamine in two biscuit products
Sat Oct 18, 2008 6:03am EDT

HONG KONG, Oct 18 (Reuters) - Excessive amounts of the chemical melamine have been found in biscuits in Hong Kong made by Malaysian-based biscuit manufacturer Munchy Food Industries, a government laboratory said on Saturday.

The announcement is part of the Hong Kong government's continued testing of dairy-related products after thousands of children in China have fallen sick since last month after drinking milk containing the substance.

The Centre for Food Safety (CFS) said it found a sample of Munchy's Mini Crackers with Peanut Butter contained 5.4 parts per million (ppm) of melamine, while a sample of Munchy's Mini Crackers with Cheese Cream had 3.8 ppm.

Under Hong Kong regulations, the limit for melamine in these products is 2.5 ppm, the food safety body said.

"Based on the levels detected, people are advised to stop consuming the products concerned," an unidentified spokesman for the Centre for Food Safety was quoted as saying in the statement.

The positive tests of melamine in the Munchy products are the latest detected by the laboratory, which have included earlier this month excessive amounts of melamine in two types of Cadbury Plc (CBRY.L: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz) chocolate made in China.

Calls to a telephone number listed in a website for Munchy's products went unanswered.

However, the website displayed a notice telling consumers its products were safe given that milk and diary-based ingredients they used came from either France or Australia, but not China.

"We wish to assure all our customers and consumers that all our products are safe for consumption," the notice said in the website.

"We do not source any of these ingredients from China and our suppliers assure us that there is no danger of melamine adulteration in their products."

China recalls another herbal drug after baby death

BEIJING (Reuters) - China has recalled a herbal remedy after it was blamed for the death of a newborn baby, state media said Monday, in the latest health scare to hit the country.

The 9-day-old baby in the northern province of Shaanxi died after being injected with "Yinzhihuang," a remedy containing herbal extracts and used to treat liver diseases and infantile jaundice, the official Xinhua news agency said.

Three other infants had suffered "adverse effects" after being injected and hospitals have been told to stop using the drug, the report said, citing the Ministry of Health.

Samples of the drug were being tested, Xinhua added.

Earlier this month, the government recalled another herbal injection whose use has been linked to the deaths of three people.

China recalled two batches of the herbal drug produced by a company based in northeastern Heilongjiang province, after the injections caused strong adverse reactions in six people from southwestern Yunnan province, three of whom died.

Authorities said the problem batches had been tainted with bacteria.

Pyramid scheme rage after investors lose on dead trees
Tuesday, October 21, 2008

Hundreds of people in Beijing scuffled with police outside a government office, demanding help in recovering money from a get-rich-quick scheme involving tree plantations to stem desertification.
More than 30,000 investors, mostly retirees, sunk 1.3 billion yuan (HK$1.48 billion) into a company's tree-planting scheme in Inner Mongolia, lured by promises of huge returns within eight years.

Authorities seized the company's plantations and sued its directors for false advertising after the project was exposed earlier this year as a failed pyramid scheme.

Police detained several protesters for putting up a banner outside the government office, as angry investors from across the country complained of dead trees and lost life savings.

Protesters complained the tree plantations on land transferred for the scheme had been left to wither and die after the company was investigated and its assets seized.

"[The company] planted trees in the desert then sold them to us. It was supposed to green the desert," said a Beijing resident surnamed Li, who lost about 100,000 yuan in the scheme.

"The company planted about 48,000 hectares, but about 40 percent died," Li added.

The scheme, which saw some farmers transfer their land to the company to use for its plantations, has showcased China's recent rural reforms, which allow farmers to transfer their land-use rights.

Rural residents own the product of their land but not the land itself and were barred from trading their land-use rights.

State media have hailed the reforms as a landmark step in guaranteeing farmers' rights.
