FDA Identifies Jalapeno Peppers In Salmonella Outbreak
7/21/2008 4:36 PM ET

(RTTNews) - A source of a salmonella outbreak that has puzzled investigators was identified Monday as Mexican-grown jalapeno peppers found in a McAllen, Texas produce plant.

The Food and Drug Administration called the announcement a "very important break in the case."

In early June, the FDA put out a warning that certain types of tomatoes were the source of the salmonella outbreak. However, last week the FDA determined that fresh tomatoes were not the source of the outbreak of Salmonella Saintpaul, lifting the warning.

The FDA is now cautioning against eating fresh jalapeno peppers, although it says that picked and processed peppers should be safe and are not included in the ban.

Two people were killed and 1,251 people have been sickened due to the recent outbreak, which has spread through 43 states.

Ice cream contaminated

Soft ice-cream sold in a convenience store in To Kwa Wan, HK has been found to contain coliform organisms more than five times the legal limit, according to Centre for Food Safety.

Coliform organisms are the commonly-used bacterial indicator of sanitary quality of foods and water.

The center's assistant director Miranda Lee Siu-yuen said that the outlet has stopped selling the ice-cream after taking advice from the center.

The center has announced the results of chemical and microbiological tests on 345 samples of various types of street snacks collected from 200 outlets in May and June.

The result also shows two curried squid and one fried pig intestine samples have been found to contain a banned coloring, Orange II.

Summer alert on food bugs issued
Gloria Lai; Friday, July 25, 2008

Despite finding less than 0.2 percent of food samples unsatisfactory in its testing over the past two months, the Centre for Food Safety has issued a warning to be extra careful because summer is the peak season for food poisoning outbreaks.

A brand of soft ice cream, Taiwanese-style minced pork with bean curd or chicken wings and several batches of New Zealand oysters have fallen foul of the center although it quickly assured that there is no immediate threat to public health.

The ice cream, it said, is no longer on sale and follow-up samples from the Mong Kok restaurant that sold the Taiwanese dishes were found to be satisfactory.

In addition, Pakihi Marine Farms is already recalling several batches of Clevedon Coast Oysters suspected to be contaminated with a microorganism that may cause vomiting or diarrhea.

The center's assistant director for food surveillance and control, Miranda Lee Siu-yuen, said a sample of soft ice cream sold in a convenience store in To Kwa Wan was found to contain coliform organisms more than five times the legal limit. The organisms are the commonly used bacterial indicator of the sanitary quality of food and water.

Lee said rice with egg bean curd and minced pork, and rice with chicken wings and minced pork sold in a Taiwanese style restaurant in Mong Kok were found to contain 520 times the legal limit of a pathogen called clostridium perfringens 36.

She said improper storage may be the possible underlying cause because follow-up samples proved to be satisfactory.

Lee added it is easy for bacteria to grow in meat mixed with sauce if handled improperly.

The center collected 10,200 food samples for testing in May and June and just 19 samples, or less than 0.2 percent, were found to be unsatisfactory.

Lee reminded traders to avoid preparing food prematurely and ensure that is stored at less than four degrees Celsius or above 60 degrees.

Always a good idea to put on your safety belt when flying..

Plane lands safely with hole the 'size of minivan'

A Qantas Airways plane on a flight from Hong Kong to Melbourne made an emergency landing in Manila after plunging thousands of feet and losing cabin pressure.

Passengers on flight QF30 reported hearing a loud bang before the aircraft rapidly lost altitude and said the Boeing 747-400 had a hole the size of a minivan in its undercarriage when it landed in the Philippine capital. "It was an amazing experience, but not a good one," said Glenyce Johnson. "The aircraft plunged from around 40,000 feet to 25,000 feet."

Qantas confirmed the loss of cabin pressure and the rupture in the plane's fuselage and said all 346 passengers and 19 crew disembarked safely. The aircraft was being inspected.
Johnson, traveling home to Australia, saw items flying out of the plane.

Settlement will reduce carcinogens in potato chipsAugust 2, 2008 1:23 AM ET advertisement

Four food manufacturers agreed to reduce levels of a cancer-causing chemical in their potato chips and french fries under a settlement announced Friday by the state attorney general's office.

California sued H.J. Heinz Co., Frito-Lay, Kettle Foods Inc., and Lance Inc. in 2005, alleging they violated a state requirement that companies post warning labels on products with carcinogens.

The companies avoided trial by agreeing to pay a combined $3 million in fines and reduce the levels of acrylamide in their products over three years, officials said.

"Other companies should follow this lead," Attorney General Jerry Brown said, calling the settlement "a victory for public health."

Acrylamide forms naturally when starchy foods are baked or fried. Studies have shown the chemical, which also has industrial uses, causes cancer in lab animals and nerve damage to workers who are exposed to high levels. The Food and Drug Administration is researching whether acrylamide in food poses a health risk.

"Everybody's trying to figure out how to lower levels (of acrylamide) without significantly, adversely affecting taste," said Michele Corish, an attorney for Lance, which produces Cape Cod chips.

Corish said the modified snacks will be available nationwide. Messages left with the other three companies were not immediately returned Friday night.

The attorney general's office said the levels of acrylamide in most Cape Cod chips are already near the compliance level as defined by the settlement. However, Brown said Cape Cod Robust Russets contain 25 times the acceptable amount.

Corish said "Robust Russets" chips are no longer being sold.

According to the terms of the settlement, Frito-Lay, which is owned by PepsiCo Inc. and produces most of the chips sold in California, will pay $1.5 million and chip-maker Kettle Foods will pay $350,000 in penalties. Heinz, which produces frozen fries and tater tots, agreed to pay $600,000. Lance will pay $95,000.

The state also sued McDonald's Corp.; Wendy's International Inc.; Burger King Corp.; KFC, a subsidiary of Yum Brands Inc.; and Procter & Gamble Co. over acrylamide levels in 2005. Those lawsuits were settled after the companies agreed to either properly label their products or lower levels of the chemical.

It's Good to Know: The Going Rate for Your Personal Information

Identity thieves trafficking in personal financial data from bank accounts and credit cards are having to work harder for their money these days.

Due to the tremendous amount of "secure" information that's now on the market, they can get only a tenth of what they used to get for something like a credit card number with its PIN.

So they've turned to "premium" information that commands higher prices, including patient healthcare and insurance information, personnel files, and corporate credit card numbers.
