Love Energy Drinks? You May Have a Change of Heart By Kelley Herring

Do you reach for a Red Bull for an afternoon pick-me-up? After reading this (or drinking that), you may have a change of heart.

A recent study conducted at Adelaide University found that people who regularly drank sugar-free Red Bull had a cardiovascular profile similar to that of people with heart disease. In fact, they found that drinking just one sugar-free Red Bull increased the "stickiness" of the blood and raised the risk of blood clots.

So what causes this? The main ingredients in Red Bull are taurine (an amino acid), glucuronolactone (a normal human metabolite), caffeine, and B vitamins. And the diet version - the one used in this study - is sweetened with sucralose and aspartame.

To beat mid-day fatigue, make sure you stay properly hydrated throughout the day. And enjoy organic green or white tea, lightly sweetened with all-natural stevia. It's calorie-free too, packed with antioxidants and actually good for your heart.

During this downturn, I believe most HR personnels have the toughest job at their company....

SiPort issues statement following tragic shooting

SAN JOSE, Calif. -- SiPort Inc. on Saturday (Nov. 15) issued a statement amid a tragedy at the chip startup. In the somber statement, SiPort offered condolences to the families and friends of the victims who were fatally shot at the company.
As reported, a former employee at the Silicon Valley chip startup, which is backed by Intel Corp., returned to the facility on Friday (Nov. 14) and fatally shot three people, according to reports.

The suspect, Jing Hua Wu, 47, was arrested on Saturday (Nov. 15) in Mountain View, Calif., according to reports. This week, Wu was apparently fired from his test engineering job at SiPort (Santa Clara, Calif.), according to reports.

Wu was ''terminated'' and was not part of a general layoff, as previously thought. SiPort has never had a general layoff in the history of the company, according to a statement issued by SiPort.

Shortly after he had been fired on Friday, Wu walked into the offices of SiPort, according to reports. Wu and three SiPort executives went into a room. Wu then pulled out a 9-mm handgun and shot all three, the reports said.

As previously feared, Wu killed three employees. The three victims were Sid Agrawal, CEO; Brian Pugh, vice president of operations; and Marilyn Lewis, human resources manager.

"The entire SiPort staff and board are in mourning. We are a close-knit team of engineers and entrepreneurs who built this company together. We are devastated by the loss and our hearts go out to the families and friends of Sid, Brian and Marilyn," said Aiman Kabakibo, the new CEO and company founder, in a statement.

Agrawal joined SiPort as CEO in 2004 and is credited with helping secure funding for the company, building out the executive staff and forming connections with early customers.

''He is known for his intelligence, approachability and warmth, as well as a leadership style that emphasized mentoring,'' according to the statement.

Pugh served as vice president of operations and was responsible for transforming SiPort into a manufacturing operation. He attended Stanford University and was ''known as a brilliant, high-energy engineer,'' according to the statement.

Marilyn Lewis served as the HR manager ''and was the glue that held the company together. She managed a variety of human resource and administrative functions including recruiting, payroll and vendor management. Marilyn joined the company in 2005 and was a key contributor to the growth of SiPort,'' according to SiPort.

"All three people were extremely well liked and will be sorely missed. We are a team of entrepreneurs, engineers and scientists who enjoy working with each other very much. We grieve along with their families and friends," said Kabakibo.

Formed in 2004, SiPort is a fabless semiconductor company developing mixed signal RF and digital baseband wireless receiver chips supporting multiple Digital Broadcast Standards. Investors in the startup include Lightspeed Venture Partners, Morgenthaler, New Venture Partners and Intel Capital.

The startup is reportedly betting the first application for its chip will be portable GSP devices, given HD Radio's ability to datacast real-time traffic information from local radio stations in far more detailed and comprehensive fashion than is currently available via the analog FM band.

In August, SiPort---a supplier of digital terrestrial broadcast receiver ICs that is partly backed by Intel Corp.--said that its device received ''HD Radio Ready'' certification from iBiquity Digital Corp. IBiquity is the developer and licensor of HD Radio technology.

Just today, there were some stabbings in Japan related to their Pension problems

Japan shields health officials after ministry murder

The suspected murder of a former vice health minister and the stabbing of the wife of another, both with careers tied to Japan's ailing pension system, prompted Japanese police to tighten security for officials.

The attacks follow a series of scandals involving pensions and health care for Japan's rapidly ageing population, including the mishandling of millions of pension records.

The introduction of a medical insurance scheme that forced some elderly citizens to pay more also angered the public.

The health ministry alerted its top officials and gave the police names and addresses of former senior officials so it could step up security around their homes.

Security was also tightened at the ministry, where metal-detecting wands were being used to check visitors.

A few days ago, two Milk Inspectors were beaten up when they refused a batch of milk...

Milk inspectors beaten over tough checks

Two milk inspectors for a major China dairy firm were severely beaten in an attack blamed on suppliers angry at tough new safety checks following a tainted milk scandal, state media said.

The two men were working in the northern city of Tangshan as inspectors for Mengniu, one of China's largest dairy companies, China Youth Daily reported.

The attack occurred on November 5 after inspector Li Zhongping had confronted an outside dairy supplier over a batch of milk he was selling.

Li and another inspector, Zhang Liwei, were set on by a group of about five club-wielding men later that day.

Li was badly beaten, suffering numerous injuries over his body, including fractured vertebra, and was in a coma for ``a long time,'' the paper said.

Cadbury Boost Totally Nuts chocolate bar recalled as precaution

SINGAPORE : Australian chocolate manufacturer Cadbury is voluntarily recalling its snack bar Cadbury Boost Totally Nuts (60g) which carry the "Best Before" date of 15-06-09.

This is due to the possible presence of plastic pieces from the manufacturing process.

The Food Standards Australia New Zealand had issued an alert earlier and in response the Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority (AVA) has taken the precautionary measure of asking importers and retailers to immediately recall the product from the market.

The AVA also advises consumers who may have bought the Cadbury Boost Totally Nuts chocolate bar, with the "Best Before" date of 15-06-09, to discard the product and not consume it.

Consumers who have any queries can call AVA’s hotline at 1800-226-2250.

22 meat stalls raided as beef scam exposed Nickkita Lau

Health inspectors have raided 22 meat stalls across the city after an investigative report in The Standard revealed how some are using a banned cancer- causing substance to give frozen beef a fresh look.

Plainclothed officers from the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department collected beef samples from several markets, including those in Yau Tong, Tsuen Wan and Ma On Shan over the weekend. They paid for the samples and asked vendors to sign documents.

A department spokesman said vendors may be prosecuted if samples are found to contain sulphur dioxide.

Inspectors tested 290 beef and pork samples in a probe conducted between July and September, and found 15 to contain the banned chemical.

The department is considering prosecuting two stalls where samples still contained the chemical in a second test.

The report by The Standard's sister paper, Sing Tao Daily, and published in both yesterday, told how a HK$60 beef sample bought from a Ma On Shan stall was sent to a laboratory and test results showed it contained 2,398 milligrams of sulphur dioxide per kilogram.

It is believed vendors dye frozen beef with the banned chemical to make the meat look more red before passing it off to consumers as fresh.

A housewife surnamed Tse, who became a regular customer of a Ma On Shan stall mentioned in the report, said she thought the retailer was helpful because he always helped her to choose better cuts of beef. She said she has now lost confidence in the stall and fears for the health of her family.

In a follow-up report, Sing Tao revealed that most meat stalls in the city, including two located near Yeung Uk Road, in Tsuen Wan, are passing off American fatty beef as so-called local fatty beef.

According to a frozen meat trader, the supply of local cattle has fallen to no more than 20 a day, and each head contains only between 10 and 30 catties of fatty beef.

"The supply is not even enough for restaurants, let alone the wet markets," the trader said.

A catty of frozen American fatty beef fetches about HK$33, while local fatty beef sells for HK$100, meaning unscrupulous vendors are pocketing an extra HK$67 for each catty sold.

Infectious disease expert Lo Wing-lok said chilled beef must be stored between zero and eight degrees Celsius.

If exposed to temperatures exceeding eight degrees for an extended length of time, it becomes unsuitable for eating.

The longer the meat is exposed to room temperature, the more bacteria is bred.

Lo said cooking such meat to well done cannot kill all the bacteria, and the consumer runs the risk of getting infected with E coli 0157, Staphylococcus Aureus, salmonella and Listeria monocytogenes, which may cause fatal diseases.

Six new biscuit products contaminated with melamine
By Pearl Forss, Channel NewsAsia | Posted: 27 November 2008 2114 hrs

SINGAPORE: Six more biscuit products have been found to be contaminated with melamine after the Agri-Food & Veterinary Authority (AVA) completed its testing of all China milk products sold in Singapore.

The six products are Baby Looney Tunes Cream Filled Biscuits Assorted Family Pack, C & OK Vigour 888 Egg & Milk, Khong Guan Mini Burger Biscuit Bulk Pack, Liluo Fruit P.D. Almond Flavour, Potter Potato Chips Pizza and Tom & Jerry Cheese Balls. This brings the total number of affected China milk products to 22.

China has implemented new control measures for milk production and AVA will be sending three officers to China in early December to ensure the measures are implemented on the ground.

Dr Chua Sin Bin, CEO, AVA, said: "Our officers will go to Inner Mongolia, Tianjin and Beijing. These are the areas where the bulk of our milk products come from. They will look at the farms, the milk collecting centre and the milk processing farm."

Importers will be required to produce a certification of product safety from the Chinese and Malaysian authorities before milk products from these countries are allowed into Singapore.

Even certified products from Malaysia and China will continue to be subjected to a mix of random testing as well as batch testing in the months ahead to ensure that they are safe for consumption.

AVA added that the ban on Julie's and Khong Guan biscuits from Malaysia could be lifted next week.

Five more cases of medical blunders

Medical instrument parts were among those left inside four patients after surgery, the Hospital Authority has revealed in the latest issue of its ''Risk Alert.''

The instruments or instrument parts are the sleeve of a orthopedic tap, the metallic clamp button from a surgical stapler, part of a gauze and a broken suction catheter.

The first three incidents went unnoticed until they showed up in X-rays. The catheter was found in the patient's nostril during a suction for sputum.

In another incident, a prematurely-born baby. who required a Group O+ blood transfusion, was given Group B+ instead.
The baby showed no major adverse reactions.

om medical doctors...

i now believe that we have to be responsible to use the services of responsible medical doctors. it can be grievous or even fatalistic to assume that your doctor is competent. that physician's mistake can cost your health dearly or your life.

do not assume...when it comes to your health.

if you are unwell and after having seen that doctor, is still unwell, go for a 2nd opinion, but from a different medical doctor. do not disclose to the 2nd doctor what your were diagnosed initially (to prevent influencing his/her opinion)

and never hesitate to ask your doctor questions..he is obliged to inform you of your medical condition. if he doesnt even tell you what is wrong with you, it could be that he simply doesn't know and that can be a result of his lack of skillsets/knowledge/experience.... then change to another doctor...

Not all doctors are trained alike and 1/2 of them graduated at the bottom of their class. Don't assume they know best.

Case in point - My wife's friend first pregnancy was taken care of by a Gynaecologist from a well known medical center. The baby was huge during pregnancy but the gynae insisted on normal delivery. From what I know, if the baby is too big and the mother is petite, they normally advocate caesarean. The baby was so huge (4.3kg versus a normal 3kg) that it damaged her lower body and caused her paralysis for 6 months. Unfortunately, she had to go around in a wheelchair for six months, unable to care for her newborn and suffered from depression. She later sued the doctor and they settled out of court, fearing -ve publicity for the medical center.
