Stray parakeet tells Japanese police where he lives

A pet parakeet was returned to its owner Wednesday after the lost bird told police its home address near Tokyo.

The male bird had escaped early Sunday morning from its owner's home in the city of Sagamihara, west of Tokyo, and remained at large before perching on the shoulder of a guest staying in a nearby hotel.

Handed over to local police, the bird did not speak until Tuesday evening, when it blurted out the names of the city and district where its owner's house is located, said a spokesman for the north Sagamihara police station.

It then produced the home's block and street number as a trio of astonished police officers listened to the now talkative bird.

The bird's owner, a 64-year-old woman, once lost another parakeet after it flew away and was determined to prevent a repeat, the spokesman told AFP.

"So the owner decided to teach the address to this parakeet after she bought it at a pet shop two years ago," he said.

"The bird's name was found to be Piko-chan as it said, 'You're pretty, Piko-chan'."

Help pets handle cold weather by Alicia

All though they wear their coats all year round, winter is an adjustment for cats and dogs too.

Here are some tips from the American Humane Society to keep your pets healthy during the cold winter:

- Keep pets inside when the temperature reaches 30 degrees with the wind-chill. Dogs and cats can get frostbitten ears, nose and feet if left outside.

- If your dog always stays outside make sure it has a dry elevated house with clean, dry bedding and a flap over the opening to keep drafts out. It is a good idea to add dog door to the garage with a soft cushion in the warmest corner.

- Check all outside water bowls throughout the day to make sure they are not frozen.

- The chemicals used to melt snow on the streets and sidewalks can irritate your pet’s paws. Before your pet goes outside, use petroleum jelly on its paws to protect its paws from the deicing materials.

- Make sure a cat hasn’t crawled under your can seeking shelter and warmth near the engine. The cat could get caught in the fan and be seriously injured when the engine starts. Open the hood of your car or slap it noisily with you hand before starting the engine on cold days to startle any animal sleeping there.

In an Authorised Cull, Marksmen Will Shoot Dead More Than 2,000 Eastern Grey Kangaroos

Eastern grey kangaroos graze near Canberra. The eastern grey kangaroo has no predators, damages the environment and threaten the survival of several rare species such as the Striped Legless Lizard and the Grassland Earless Dragon.

Super Powers of Animals

Our vision of the world and our place within it is built on the foundation that we are this planet’s ‘supreme beings’… But what does this really mean?

Are we the strongest, are we the fastest, what do we mean by intelligence and could we survive where other animals would perish?

The Animal X – Natural Mystery Unit goes in search of Animal Super Powers.

Daniel and Natalie investigate whether humans truly are the most intelligent species on Earth.

Stress Control

Had a stressful day? Feel better fast by having a staring contest with your pet.

In a study in the journal Hormones and Behavior, when dog owners maintained eye contact with their pets for about 2½ minutes, they experienced a 20% spike in oxytocin, a feel-good hormone that sends away negative feeling and encourages calm and relaxation.

World's oldest hippo dies at 62

Donna, believed to be the world's oldest hippo, has died at the age of 62 after living more than two decades beyond the massive mammal's usual life expectancy, zoo officials said.

Donna had lived most of her life in the small town of Evansville, Indiana at the Mesker Park Zoo & Botanic Garden.

"It is with great sadness for us to announce that Donna, the world's oldest living Nile hippopotamus in captivity, was humanly euthanized this morning due to her declining quality of life caused by her debilitating severe arthritis," zoo director Amos Morris said in a statement Wednesday.

Donna was born at what is now the Memphis Zoo in 1951 and arrived at Mesker Park on August 7, 1956.

She had eight offspring with her mate Kley and had lived at the zoo longer than any of the current staff have worked there.

Hippos typically live no more than 40 years in the wild and about 50 years in captivity.

Animals Have Conscious Awareness - Science Makes It Official By George Dvorsky

An international group of prominent scientists has signed The Cambridge Declaration on Consciousness in which they are proclaiming their support for the idea that animals are conscious and aware to the degree that humans are — a list of animals that includes all mammals, birds, and even the octopus.

But will this make us stop treating these animals in totally inhumane ways?
