MCYS rebuts SDP's criticism of YOG
by Cheow Xin Yi
04:46 AM Apr 09, 2011
SINGAPORE - The Ministry of Community Development, Youth and Sports (MCYS) has responded to Singapore Democratic Party's (SDP) criticism of the Youth Olympic Games (YOG) as an event "riddled with incompetence and mismanagement".

In a letter to Today published on Friday, the SDP said the party will take on MCYS Minister Vivian Balakrishnan in Holland-Bukit Timah GRC to hold him accountable for the YOG budget, which ended up three times the initial S$104 million planned.

In response, MCYS sports director Koh Peng Keng pointed out that although the YOG was one-third the size of the Summer Olympics, its expenditure was less than 10 per cent of the most recent Games.

Ultimately, the YOG brought in S$60 million in additional tourism receipts for Singapore and a marketing value of at least S$56.7 million
, he said.

i read the reply by MCYS over and over. i just dont comprehend how their response in anyway answered the original criticism of its incompetence and mismanagement.

spent S$312million.... and claims to have brought in S$60mil of tourism dollar and S$56.7mil of "marketing value" ?? besides the obvious that we lost money hosting this event, how is this line of answer relevant at all? and by the way, what is "marketing value"?

this is why we need opposition members of parliament... this is why we need them to make pap accountable to our taxpayers...
without such opposition MPs, pap can squander away our taxpayers' money anyway they deem fit :!:

So if you have Sin$300m to spend, would you be spending it on a Sporting Event or be using the money to take care of your Poor, Old and Sick ?

MCYS minister: We miscalculated on YOG budget By Ewen Boey

Dr Vivian Balakrishnan has admitted that his team had miscalculated the Youth Olympic Games (YOG) budget.

Speaking at the People's Action Party (PAP) rally in Clementi on Wednesday night, Dr Balakrishnan explained what happened to the YOG budget by relating it to his conversation with Thaddeus Lim, an undergraduate, who asked him about it four days ago on the LRT train at Bukit Panjang.

"We got the initial estimates of the money to be spent on the YOG wrong," Dr Balakrishnan frankly told the 1,000-strong crowd that gathered on the mud-soaked field in Clementi.

He explained that the games exceeded its original budget of S$104 million by over three times because it was the first time that such an event was organised and there was no other model for reference.

Furthermore, it took more than a year after the International Olympic Council (IOC) chose Singapore as the venue for the YOG before details could be confirmed.

"We realised there would be all 26 sports and all the athletes were to stay for two weeks, so we did the sums and went to see the PM."

He revealed that Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong then asked him if he would have bid for the YOG if he had known it would cost more than S$300 million.

To this, Dr Balakrishnan said that he would still do it, and had no regrets.

"Whatever criticisms, I am proud of the YOG and of the athletes, proud of the 50,000 volunteers who made great sacrifices to be part of a once-in-a-lifetime event," he said, acknowledging that people are entitled to their opinions.

( Who has heard of the YOG ? )

The 50-year-old, who heads the Ministry of Community Development, Youth and Sports (MCYS), insisted that his team "did not overspend or waste or squander" the S$387 million budget allocated to the project. In fact, he proudly declared that they spent much less.

The leader of the Holland-Bukit Timah GRC team reassured Singaporeans that the increased budget did not eat into the other expenses of his ministry.

"The YOG had a separate budget and we did not cut back on the other expenses for MCYS."

He added that 70 per cent of the budget went to paying local companies to provide services for the Games, which would in turn help them gain international recognition.

( What is "gain international recognition" ? )

Further in his speech, Dr Balakrishnan said that the three main concerns for the younger generation this election were respect, a fair and just society and a land of opportunity.

He also said that this election would be about re-establishing the relationship between the people, and the PAP.

( Why ? Is there a relationship problem ? If yes, why is there a relationship problem ? )

So many Uncles and Aunties collecting leftovers ...

PAP to splurge $800,000 on YOG Festival

July 3rd, 2011 | Author: Temasek Review

Despite the catastrophic failure of the Youth Olympic Games (YOG) held last year which cost Singapore an eye-popping $387 million dollars, the PAP regime will be splurging another $800,000 dollars on a ‘festival’ to commemorate its first anniversary.

The first Singapore Youth Olympic Festival will be held in August from 13 till 19 with funding from the Singapore Olympic Foundation to ‘continue the momentum of the Youth Olympics.’

Some 2,000 athletes will be competing in five sports – table tennis, badminton, football, basketball and taekwondo.

It is not known if Singapore will be sponsoring the travel expenses of foreign athletes to come here to take part in the event.

The YOG was the most expensive flop in the sporting history of the world and was notable for a series of screw-ups such as the mistreatment of volunteers by feeding them ‘dog’ food, a mass food poisoning outbreak affecting more than 20 volunteers and the deplorable arrest of a netizen for criticizing the minister in charge.

One year later, few people remember the much hyped up YOG which was supposed to put Singapore on the world map, but ended up burning a ‘hole’ in the state coffers instead.

Till today, PAP minister Dr Vivian Balakrishnan has yet to account for the shocking overblowing of the budget by more than 3 times as well as the mass food poisoning outbreak which he had earlier PROMISED to investigate.

High chance they will continue pumping this money in until the Sports Hub is ready.

They need to sustain the excitement over the Sports Hub concept.
1. Always wait for the setup. NO SETUP; NO TRADE

2. The trend will END but I don't know WHEN.

Hmmm... very high EQ :P. Constantly reminding the people on what a "success" the games was ....

YOG marks first anniversary By Patwant Singh

SINGAPORE: The Singapore Youth Olympic Festival was held on Sunday to commemorate the first anniversary of the republic's hosting of the inaugural Youth Olympic Games (YOG).

One of those present at the festival, held at the Singapore Expo, was Ino Menegaki, who played the role of the High Priestess of the Olympic Flame Lighting Ceremony.

She was the priestess for the Lighting Ceremonies for the Beijing Summer Olympics, Winter Olympics of Vancouver and the Youth Olympic Games in Singapore.

Four athletes from Japan's tsunami-affected region were also invited to the event.

Deputy Prime Minister Teo Chee Hean said: "In time to come, I hope that the Singapore Youth Olympic Festival would grow and like the Australian Youth Olympic Festival and the European Youth Olympic Festival, become an international sporting event for young people to compete, learn about one another's culture, and make new friends from around the world."

Celebrations aside, the festival's highlights included competitions involving five sports -- table tennis, badminton, basketball, futsal and Taekwondo.

International Olympic Committee vice-president Ng Ser Miang said: "We are looking at every alternate year, (to) invite international athletes. For the second year, the timing could also be shifted to enable more schools to take part, so (it will move) away from August."

About 1,200 athletes from all age groups are competing in the inaugural Singapore Youth Olympic Festival which will be on for the next five days.
