Medicine and Positive Thinking - Healing and Wellness through Positive Thinking By Michael Lee

Positive thinking has, for the longest time, been relegated to the realm of new age, inspirational, and metaphysical healing rather than to the empirical fields of science and physiology. Medicine and positive thinking, therefore, were once thought to go together like brownies and onions.

But recent findings have revealed that medicine and positive thinking may not be as incompatible after all. Indeed, they may actually be far more complementary than we could ever imagine.

Not only is positive thinking good for mental health, but it is now scientifically proven to be just as healthy for the body. Optimists generally have lower levels of stress hormones and are at lower risk for cardiovascular disease — telltale signs of a healthier immune system—compared to those of pessimists. Positive thinkers are also more likely to get well faster during treatment for a physical illness.

If negative factors like anxiety and stress can adversely affect a person’s physical well-being, then it should follow that positive thinking has a reverse effect. The only reason this hasn’t been readily accepted as truth before is because for years, we have tended to focus more on the negative, measuring and quantifying depression and such while the scales of happiness remained uncharted.

Research has repeatedly shown that chronic and psychological stress delays the healing process, reduces vaccine effectiveness, and diminishes the immune system’s health. Here, at least, we have known that there is, in fact, an obvious connection between what you know and feel in your head and how your body responds to it. Literally, you are what you think.

Medicine and positive thinking are hardly interchangeable, but they work wonders when taken hand in hand. So when you’re sick, expect positive results. Picture yourself in the prime of health; or if you want to be more realistic, visualize yourself recuperating from your sickness. Laugh your way to recovery. That is the best medicine, after all, according to the well-known proverb.

Positive expectations, like the placebo effect, can greatly reduce pain; thus, proving the innate power of an optimistic outlook in life. So do yourself a favor by thinking positive and helping yourself get better.

Medicine and positive thinking do work famously together. It is not believing in a false hope, but rather embracing the beauty of life despite its many setbacks. Positive thinking was never meant to be a miracle cure, but if you focus on living instead of drowning in anger, sorrow, and self-pity, you may just find yourself thinking your way to health and wellness.

Vitamin D

After years of warning against the dangers of sunlight, at least one mainstream researcher has caught up to reality.

He's Angus Dalgleish, M.D., a medical oncologist and professor at St. George's University of London. For most of his life he's always avoided sunlight, covering up whenever he was outside and using plenty of sunblock.

As a "fair-haired Scot" (his own description), he always feared that too much sun might result in melanoma -- the deadly form of skin cancer.

But his thinking began to change about 15 years ago. As part of a research team that tested vitamin D to treat breast cancer, he found that D could speed up the death of tumor cells and target tumors in many other ways.

Jump ahead a few years and Dr. Dalgleish was shocked when he started testing his cancer patients' D levels. He expected 30 percent would be deficient. But his discovery that the percentage was closer to 90 "changed everything for me."

Writing in a recent edition of the Daily Mail, he says he now believes that avoiding sun exposure increases rather than reduces skin cancer risk.

Think about that little smear that starts out as the human body, and then there's a nose and a liver and a gizzard, oh, not a gizzard... All that stuff that is present and knows how to become this. There's so much knowledge within the human body.

You're wanting to free the human body's knowledge to be well from the resistance that has been picked up along this physical trail.

The very best approach to medicine is,"Well, I see your physical body is sick, what's been bothering you? What are you worried about? What are you angry about? What are you frustrated about?"

Because that is what is at the root of all of this. And then say, "Let it go, let it go, let it go." That's the message, and if they could hear you and do that, then they would all be well right away.

A simple way to protect yourself from E. coli infection

The E. coli outbreak in Germany has been headline news for the past few weeks. E. coli is a bacteria that normally lives in our guts... This strain of E. coli causes a complication known as hemolytic-uremic syndrome (HUS). HUS can cause blood clotting and kidney failure. It's especially dangerous to children and the elderly.

As is typical, government bureaucrats are wasting hundreds of millions of dollars on something rare. The outbreak has killed 37 people. Officials are calling for a solution. Countries are working on implementing new, costlier food regulations. Some are proposing a vaccine for cattle to reduce E. coli outbreaks - an absurdly costly proposition. And if development and testing works perfectly, it would be many years away...

But there's a simple way to protect yourself from this extremely rare event... Rinse your produce. A thorough rinse gets rid of enough of the germs (and pesticides) on fruits and vegetables that your immune system can easily handle the rest.

Do what I do... Mix a little white vinegar with water and soak your produce before eating. Then, rinse the stuff off with water. Even if a few bacteria remain, your immune system can easily handle them.

Can Exercise Literally Reverse the Effects of Aging? By Kevin P. Donoghue, Peak Health Advocate

Can regular aerobic exercise literally reverse the effects of aging? According to a new study published online ahead of print in a journal from the American Physiology Association, the answer appears to be yes, at least for mice, and possibly for humans.

Health: Nine ways to feel good in 30 minutes

We’ve come up with nine things you can do to boost your morale and feel good about yourself. Not only will these tasks themselves increase your happiness, but the mere fact that you’ve achieved some concrete goals will boost your mood.

1.Raise your activity level

Pump up your energy and give yourself an endorphin rush. If you’re on the phone, stand up and pace. Take the stairs instead of the lift, put more energy into your voice or even take a brisk 10-minute walk around the office — every little thing helps.

2. Let’s go outside

Research has suggested that light stimulates brain chemicals that improve moods. For an extra boost, get your dose of sunlight first thing in the morning. If you leave for work before sunrise, take a quick break at about 10am and soak in some sunshine — at this hour, sunlight has the maximum amount of vitamin D absorbable by the human body.

3. Reach out

Send an email or call to a friend you haven’t seen in a while, or reach out to someone new. Developing close bonds with other people is one of the most important keys to happiness. When you act in a friendly way, not only will others feel friendlier towards you, but you’ll also strengthen your feelings of friendliness for other people.

4. Rid yourself of a nagging task

Deal with that insurance problem, purchase something you need, or make that long-postponed appointment with the dentist. Crossing an irksome chore off your to-do list will give you a rush of elation.

5. Create a more serene environment

Outer order contributes to inner peace, so spend some time organising your desk and tackling those piles of paperwork. A large stack of little tasks can feel overwhelming, but often just a few minutes of work can make a sizable dent. Set the timer on your phone for 10 minutes and see what you can do.

6. Do a good deed

Introduce two people by email, take a minute to pass along useful information, or deliver some gratifying praise. Simple things that make a huge difference all around.

7. Save someone’s life

Donate some blood or sign up to be an organ donor, and remember to tell your family about your decision. It will make you feel good that you are making a difference to someone else’s life.

8. Act happy

Fake it ‘til you feel it. Research shows that even an artificially induced smile boosts your mood. And if you’re smiling, other people will perceive you as being friendlier and more approachable.

9. Learn something new

Think of a subject that you wish you knew more about and spend 15 minutes on the Internet reading about it, or go to a bookstore and buy a book about it. But be honest and pick a topic that really interests you, not something you think you should or need to learn about.

Is Lack of Sleep Hurting Your Heart? By Kimberly Day

Sleep problems tied to perceived stress and possibly cardiovascular disease

Nearly 40 million Americans have long-term sleep problems, with another 20 million to 30 million experiencing occasional sleep problems, according to the National Commission on Sleep Disorders Research at the National Institutes of Health.

And, according to a recent study, stress is a common reason for sleeplessness,[1] and this, it turns out, may be related to heart disease.

Sunscreen

The FDA appears to be getting at least one thing right with new regulations for sunscreen and sunblock products.

As I mentioned last week, the agency has admitted that an SPF above 50 is meaningless and does not offer any greater protection than products with lower SPFs.

SPF is sun protection factor. And the numbering is simple. Say you use a sunscreen that's SPF 10. That means you can expose yourself to sunlight 10 times longer than the time it usually takes you to begin developing a sunburn.

But the SPF just isn't logical when SPF numbers get absurdly high.

An Environmental Working Group (EWG) report puts it this way: Say you begin to burn within 30 minutes of sun exposure. You apply a lotion that's SPF 100. So...now you can safely sit in full sunshine for 50 hours without burning?

It's absurd. In fact, in a 2007 draft regulation, the FDA called SPF numbers over 50 "inherently misleading."

And there's a huge potential for harm in being mislead like that.

Studies have shown that when SPF is quite high, users begin to feel like their protection is invincible. So they're likely to apply less sunscreen than the amount recommended, and they tend to spend longer periods in direct sunlight.

The EWG report also notes that higher SPF means higher levels of chemicals applied directly to the skin. And some of those chemicals have been linked to hormone disruption and tissue damage.

You can find EWG's gallery of sunscreens and sunblocks that contain the least amounts of harmful chemicals while still providing sufficient protection at this link: breakingnews.ewg.org/2011sunscreen/

Smoking

Have you seen the ghoulish new warning labels that will soon be appearing on cigarette packages?

They're like shots from a Zombie invasion movie! Decrepit lungs...disfigured mouths...run for your life!

I'm glad I don't smoke anymore. I'd hate to look at those images everyday. And that's what's going to happen. Most smokers will just get used to seeing hideous photos and go right on smoking.

And kids? I think the images will also have very little effect on most middle school and high school students. Remember how invincible we all were then?

No, you're going to have to convince them another way...

They should tell the girls they'll be ugly, and tell the boys they'll be impotent.

Then stand back and watch the rate of underage smoking plummet!
