Establish right relationship with man first

You will never find it if you seek it. You will never find it if you run after it. You will never find it if your intention is in seeing the beauty of the earth, in seeing the light on the water, in seeing the perfect line of a mountain, and you hope through seeing, to find that.

You will never find it because you cannot find that through anything, through your sacrifice, through your worship, through your meditation, through your virtue.

You will never come upon it because your motive is all wrong, because you want to find that, not in living, but somewhere else.

You must establish right relationship with man first, which means you must know what it means to love, what it means to be compassionate, what it means to be generous when you have a great deal, what it means to share with another the little that you have, to establish this marvellous order in living, daily living.

What is the simple step that we can do today, which will ensure that we are blessed with all kinds of happiness?

You may or may not worship the Divine, but you must respect your mother and father, who are responsible for your birth. Respect your mother. Keep her always happy.

No one can estimate or describe a mother's love. It has no pollution. If you are able to win the love of your mother, it amounts to acquiring all degrees. Our scriptures enjoin us to respect mother, father, teacher and the Divine in that order.

First and foremost is your mother who gave you birth. The father brings you up and puts you on the road to development. The mother is the foundation for the mansion of your life. The father represents the wall and the Guru is the roof. Finally, the Divine is your life itself.

Hence, those who yearn for the Divine must love their mother first. If only you keep her happy, all other things of happiness will be added unto you.

Only when one is as nothing

Question: You often speak of living, experiencing, and yet being as nothing. What is this state of consciously being as nothing? Has this anything to do with humility, being open to the grace of the Divine?

Krishnamurti: To be consciously anything is not to be free. If I am conscious that I am non-greedy, beyond anger, surely I am not free from greed, anger. Humility is something of which you cannot be conscious.

To cultivate humility is to cultivate self-expansion negatively. Therefore any virtue that is deliberately cultivated, practised, lived, is obviously not virtue. It is a form of resistance; it is a form of self-expansion, which has its own gratification. But it is no longer virtue.

Virtue is merely a freedom in which you discover the real. Without virtue, there can be no freedom. Virtue is not an end in itself. Now, it is not possible by deliberate, conscious effort to be as nothing, because then it is another achievement.

Innocence is not the result of careful cultivation. To be as nothing is essential. As a cup is useful only when it is empty, so only when one is as nothing is it possible to receive the grace of the Divine, or Truth, or what you will.

What is the important lesson we should internalize today and practice everyday?

You call yourself a human being. Unless there are human values in you, how can you be called a human being? Only when you develop noble qualities you are entitled to be called a human.

We often come across people changing jobs with a hope of getting high salaries. Do not develop this craze for money. Instead of the craving for money, develop human values.

When you develop love for the Divine, the demonic qualities in you will be removed. When people get rid of demonic qualities, the society will become better. You will earn a good name in your society.

The Divine will always protect persons who adhere to human values and constantly guard and guide them. Hence, develop morality and love for the Divine.

What is the best path to reap goodness?

People should of course have some comforts for this physical body and fulfill some desires that are necessary for their daily life. But unfortunately, these desires are reaching to a point of insatiability.

You may live for a few years or a full hundred years in this physical world. One day or the other, the body has to be cast off. Hence, do not cultivate unlimited desires.

Some people have intense desire to have the vision of the Divine. Where is the Divine? You are all embodiments of Divinity. The Divine is not separate.

People are more valuable than all the wealth in the world. We see three kinds of beings in the world: Tame Animals, Wild Beasts and Human Beings.

One has to analyze for oneself, whether one belongs to the category of animals or beasts or human beings. If you are a human being, then you should cultivate human values.

Seeking implies duality

In seeking there are several things involved: there is the seeker and the thing that he seeks after. When the seeker finds what he thinks is truth, is Divine, is enlightenment, he must be able to recognize it. He must recognize it, right?

Recognition implies previous knowledge, otherwise you cannot recognize. I cannot recognize you if I had not met you yesterday. Therefore when I say this is truth, I have already known it and therefore it is not truth.

So a man who is seeking truth lives a life of hypocrisy, because his truth is the projection of his memory, of his desire, of his intentions to find something other than what is; a formula.

So seeking implies duality; the one who seeks and the thing sought after; and where there is duality there is conflict. There is wastage of energy.

So you can never find it, you can never invite it.

What is the relationship between Human Values and Happiness?

Truth is the first and foremost human value. Truth does not undergo any change in all in the three periods of time - past, present and future. You have to develop faith in that Truth.

Next is Love. "Love is the Divine, Live in Love." In fact, your entire life should be nourished and nurtured by love. When truth and love go together, non-violence is the result. Where there is love, people will not quarrel amongst themselves.

When you develop love, you will consider all others as your brothers and sisters. Suppose you meet someone and say, "Hello Brother", even your enemy will respond by saying "Hello Brother".

Hence, first purify your own thoughts and when you develop purity, there will be Divinity. When unity, purity and divinity go together, your life will certainly be happy.

You cannot seek truth

The idea of searching for truth is utter nonsense! Because to search for something implies that you are trying to find, uncover something. How can you find, with a dull and repetitive mind, something which is not to be sought after, which is something alive, moving, which is totally new?

So you cannot seek it. I know it is one of the fashionable things or religious things to seek truth or the Divine! You have to throw that word overboard; it has no meaning. But what has meaning is to find out if the brain can be extraordinarily sensitive, quiet, and free.

Out of that freedom alone can one live peacefully in this world and create a new world, a new generation, a new people.

How should your actions be, every single day, in your journey to the Divine?

To a superficial observer, the life of man appears as a rotation of eating and drinking, toiling and sleeping. But verily, Life is a sacrifice. Each little act is an offering to the Divine. Do not commit the great fault of identifying with the body.

Do not accumulate a variety of things for the upkeep and the comfort of the body.
Before death, everything - position, pride, power, etc. - will vanish. Realize this and strive day and night with purity of body, mind and spirit, to realize the Higher Self by serving all living beings.

Remember, Thou Art That; You are the indestructible Eternal Self. Utilize your authority over this body to foster the welfare of the world. The body is but an instrument, an implement given by the Divine. Let it serve its purpose.

The man who is following a path can never know truth

Truth is not something in the distance; there is no path to it, there is neither your path nor my path; there is no devotional path, there is no path of knowledge or path of action, because truth has no path to it.

The moment you have a path to truth, you divide it, because the path is exclusive; and what is exclusive at the very beginning will end in exclusiveness. The man who is following a path can never know truth because he is living in exclusiveness; his means are exclusive, and the means are the end, are not separate from the end.

If the means are exclusive, the end is also exclusive. So there is no path to truth, and there are not two truths. Truth is not of the past or the present, it is timeless.
