Schools to focus on soft-skills
By Amelia Tan

SCHOOLS will emphasise more on soft-skills such as creativity, innovation and global awareness to prepare students for work in a fast-changing and technologically advanced world.

The Ministry of Education on Tuesday announced that such skills will be stepped up through a range of strategies such as assessing them through project work other than pen and paper tests, increasing opportunities for co-curricular actitives, more time for physical education lessons and placing greater importance on music and the arts.

The Ministry recognises that PE teaches student important life skills like team work and resilience and it will increase the time for PE lessons for Primary 1 and 2 pupils from 1.5 hours per week to 2 hours.

Primary 3 to 6 pupils will also attend 2.5 hours of PE, from 1.5 hours now. Sec 1 to Sec 4 students will attend 2 hours of PE from 1 hours now. These changes will be implemented in phases.

All new art and music teachers will be trained to teach only music or art so that they can specialise in the subject and improve lessons.

NUS, NTU raise fees
By Yeo Shang Long

THE National University of Singapore (NUS) and Nanyang Technological University (NTU) on Thursday announced fee hikes of 4 to nearly 18 per cent for this year's cohorts.

Singaporean undergraduates enrolling in NUS's Architecture and Business courses this academic year will pay 7 per cent more, while fees for Law and Pharmacy will go up by 10 per cent. Tuition fees for all other NUS undergraduate courses will rise by 4 per cent for local students.

At NTU, those entering non-business undergraduate courses will pay about 8 per cent more, while business programme students will have to fork out almost 18 per cent more.

Explaining that the fee adjustments are to help defray operating costs, Professor Tan Eng Chye, NUS Provost and Deputy President (Academic Affairs), said: 'The new fees remain very competitive with international programmes of distinction. The Ministry of Education will continue to subsidise the larger part of the University's operating and capital costs.'

Differentiated fee increases for Permanent Residents (PRs) and International Students will also kick in this year. Fees for PRs at the two universities will increase by between $720 and $2,810, while International Student fees will go up by between $800 and $3,120.

NTU has also introduced different fees for Business and non-Business undergraduates starting from their freshman year. Previously, first year undergraduates in NTU paid the same fees regardless of their course, with higher fees for Accountancy and Business students only taking effect in the second year.

The university fee hike comes after Polytechnics and ITEs raised their fees for this academic year, with further increases for PRs and international students as well.

Water survival skills for kids
New scheme to replace Learn-To-Swim aimed at reducing drownings

By Ang Yiying

A NEW national water programme to be rolled out in July will teach participants not only how to swim, but also how to survive when in trouble.

It is open to everyone, but primary school pupils are expected to benefit most from SwimSafer, which replaces a swimming programme that most children now take.

It hopes to reduce the odds of drowning by equipping swimmers with a range of water survival skills.

Singapore Life Saving Society figures from 2004 to 2008, the latest available, show that at least 22 people died every year, with a high of 57 in 2007.

SwimSafer replaces the Learn-To- Swim programme, which started that year, and has taught more than 30,000 primary school pupils a year how to swim.

It also replaces the decades-old National Survival Swimming Award (Nassa), which tests basic water survival skills.

Very good idea. In addition, they should also make it compulsory to learn First Aid..

SUTD to open in April 2012
By Leow Si Wan

SINGAPORE's fourth university - the Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD) - will open in April 2012.

Students enrolled in the school can expect to complete their studies in three and a half years and graduate with a Bachelor's Degree in one of these four areas: Architecture and Sustainable Design, Engineering Product Design, EngineeringSystems and System Design and Information Engineering and Design.

The first admissions exercise will take place on Saturday. For this exercise, SUTD welcomes applications from students who have obtained their Cambridge A-level qualifications or the equivalent at a sitting in 2009, or earlier as well as students who will graduate in 2010 or earlier with a diploma from a polytechnic here.

More details are available on the school's

University education that is a little different
Soon-to-open SUTD offers students a unique Independent Activities Period each year

By FELDA CHAY

SINGAPOREAN university applicants at the soon-to-be-open Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD) can look forward to an education that is a little different from that of other local universities - with an $11,000 price tag per year of study for its first intake in April 2012.

At a press conference to unveil the curriculum structure and tuition fees, SUTD president Thomas Magnanti said that its education structure would consist of what is known as an Independent Activities Period (IAP) each year - a special four-week term that provides students with the opportunity to, for instance, organise, sponsor and participate in activities such as forums, films, tours, recitals and contests.

The IAP is also offered at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology - which has forged a partnership with SUTD that will involve MIT faculty members developing and teaching the SUTD's curriculum, and mentor and undertake joint research projects with SUTD faculty.

During the IAP, there will be few or no formal classes. 'Instead, students, faculty members and staff can conduct seminars and short courses in a wide variety of topics according to individual interests,' said SUTD in a statement.

Students will also be able to enjoy internship opportunities with corporations such as Far East Organization, Microsoft, Google and Bain & Company. So far, the university has managed to snag 18 corporations to provide internships to its students.

SUTD, which welcomes its first intake in April 2012, is starting its undergraduate admissions exercise today - the first in a series of admissions exercises to select the university's first intake of 500 students.

From 2012, it will open applications in October for students to matriculate in April the following year. Following the first intake, students in subsequent batches will be expected to pay higher fees, said the university.

Students enrolled in SUTD can expect to complete their studies in 31/2 years, and graduate with a Bachelor's degree in one of four areas - architecture, sustainable design, engineering product design, engineering systems and system design, and information engineering and design.

Its academic calendar will comprise eight semesters of about 14 weeks each. Students will begin their studies in April in their first year, and complete their education in August in their final year.

The university added that it would be offering up to 100 scholarships to 'selected top students' for its first intake. These scholarships will cover the full tuition for the entire duration of undergraduate studies.

Also, to ensure that no student is denied an education at the university because of a lack of financial means, it will be offering bursaries and other financial aid schemes to its students.

SUTD is holding its first open house today and tomorrow at Swissotel Stamford. More details on the university's offerings are available at www.sutd.edu.sg.
