Haha, poland said it very nicely. Some parents are really not enlightened. I was 'sacked' a few times in my career because of them, thankfully! It's such a chore having to report to them all the time.

K, you must be tired, haha, so many spelling mistakes in your post :)

This is the education thread afterall, ahem, ahem :)

This is probably the most discouraging news I have read today. If you think deeper into this issue, something is VERY wrong here. The school's rewarding a behavior which SHOULD BE EXPECTED from students?

What comes next? You do your homework and hand them in and we will reward you with money???

The kids nowadays have a "Its all about me" mentality. That's Y they never bother to help out around the house cos' "all I need to do is to study hard" and parents reward them for just BEING ALIVE...

Reward for punctual students
By Leow Si Wan

SCHOOLS which have come up with novel ways to get their students to be on time have managed to shave tardiness rates by between 20 per cent and 75 per cent.

Instead of punishing latecomers, they reward students who are punctual or, in the case of one school, help them be on time by providing buses to ferry them to school from a pick-up point near the bus interchange.

It is not that latecomers are a major problem at these schools, but the teachers save time when all students are present at the start of classes.

Teachers need not waste time tracking the laggards, nor do they need to call the students' parents or set aside time to meet them to discuss their children's problem. Teachers also need not slow down a lesson, or repeat parts of it, for latecomers.

The time saved could go towards better preparations for lessons, and, hence, more effective lessons.

At Mayflower Secondary School, for instance, classes are recognised for punctuality and other achievements with certificates that can be displayed on classroom doors.

I think you must view it differently.

The school is trying to solve a problem.

The students are divided into 3 groups:
- Group A (always punctual)
- Group B (sometimes punctual, sometimes late)
- Group C (can never be punctual)

My beliefs is that the school just want to reduce the numbers in Group B. You can't do much for those persistent Group C. (>> pretty much like an election)

Let's put this into another setting; in a corporate world.

Your annual assessment is make up of a certain set of KPI. One of the indicators is getting things done on time.
- Will you go on to say that rewarding efficient staffs as 'wrong'?
- If it is not 'wrong', then can we extend to say that efficient staff should not get more bonus because they are efficient?
1. Always wait for the setup. NO SETUP; NO TRADE

2. The trend will END but I don't know WHEN.

Interesting way you put it. I do understand what the school is trying to do.

Although I do agree with what you posted, I must differ that the ends justify the means.

If these kids cannot be held accountable for something that is expected of them and something as simple as being punctual, what other responsibilities can we entrust them with? What hope can parents have that these kids will

1. Take care of their parents when they are ill?
2. Take care of their parents when they are old?
3. Be able to take care of themselves?

These are character faults/flaws that must and should be eliminated.

"Sow an act...reap a habit; Sow a habit...reap a character; Sow a character...reap a destiny."

If this goes on, does the future employer need to charter a bus for these kids when they become an employee??

I am not challenging your view, 802. :D

I am just stating what I see as a sorry state of affairs.

we humans are conditional beings..we get conditioned into certain behaviour with rewards and punishments all throughout our lives...but most effectively, positive conditioning, such as a desired behaviour, is achieved during younger days....

we expect good socially acceptable and conforming behaviour from our youths. one way to mold them, is to encourage them when they do conform to these expectations...using rewards as a reinforcement tool ..

when i read that school's initiative, i see it more as the school being proactive in finding ways to better their education system to benefit the children... the motive behind it is admirable...

so, i guess, we will see things from very different angles...

just like i see the whole building of IRs as just the casinos and the ills they will bring to our society...others will see the pleasure and fun of the theme parks will bring to their families...

Polytechnics up tuition fees
TUITION fees for polytechnic students here will go up this academic year.

The five polytechnics here - Nanyang, Ngee Ann, Republic, Singapore and Temasek - on Thursday jointly announced that they will raise fees for diploma courses by $50 for Singapore citizen students, and between $480 and $800 for new Permanent Resident (PR) students.

New international students (IS) will have to pay between $480 and $1,070 more.

Three polytechnics - Singapore, Ngee Ann and Nanyang - will also increase the fees for their existing polytechnic-foreign specialised institution degree courses by 3 per cent in this academic year.

The fee hike will also apply to existing PRs and foreign students admitted before the 2010 academic year 'to achieve a sharper differentiation by citizenship,' said a joint statement from the five polytechnics.

'Fees for PRs and IS remain competitive as compared to those charged by international and private schools to allow Singapore to to continue to attract quality students and add diversity in the educational environment,' it added.

Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, in a speech delivered at the Nanyang Technological University (NTU) Students' Union ministerial forum last September, said that the Government will, over time, sharpen the differentiation between Singapore citizens, PRs and foreigners to reflect the responsibilities and privileges of citizenship.

The polytechnics also gave the assurance that there are sufficient financial assistance schemes in place so that no student 'will be denied the opportunity of a tertiary education because of financial difficulties.'

better late than never.... it just puzzles me why this was not even ingrained in the thought process right from the beginning....

this is like patching up a badly inflicted wound.... it can heal...but the scar will remain for a long time...

i'm sceptical.... it's election time...thus an election ploy....
