Indonesia reports second bird flu death this year

Indonesia on Friday reported its second human death from bird flu this year, with the death of a five-year-old girl who recently lost her relative to the deadly virus.

Concerns about avian influenza have risen in the region after China in late December reported its first fatality from the H5N1 virus in 18 months.

Vietnam on Thursday reported its first human death from the virus in nearly two years, as the virus also claimed the life of a toddler in Cambodia.

Bird flu claims another victim in China

BEIJING (AFP) - A man in southwest China who contracted the bird flu virus died on Sunday, state media reported, the second human death in the Asian country from the virulent disease in just under a month.

The victim fell ill on Jan 6 and was admitted to hospital in Guiyang - capital of Guizhou province - on Thursday, but his condition worsened and doctors were unable to save him, the official Xinhua news agency said.

Tests confirmed he had contracted the H5N1 avian influenza virus, it added. The Hong Kong Department of Health said in a statement Sunday it had been notified of the case by the mainland's health authorities, which said the 39-year-old patient had not had any obvious exposure to poultry.

He is the second man to die from bird flu in China in less than a month, after a bus driver in the southern province of Guangdong passed away from the disease on Dec 31.

Indonesia reports fourth bird flu death of the year

A 12-year-old boy on the Indonesian resort island of Bali has died from bird flu, the fourth human death from the virus this year, an official said Saturday.

The boy developed fever on February 11 and was admitted to hospital five days later, the Indonesian health ministry's head of animal-borne infectious disease control, Rita Kusriastuti, told AFP.

"He suffered shortness of breath and eventually died on February 21. Laboratory tests confirmed he died from the H5N1 virus," she added.

Concerns about avian influenza have risen in Asia since China in late December reported its first fatality from the H5N1 virus in 18 months.

Indonesia has been the hardest-hit by bird flu, with 150 deaths reported between 2003 and 2011, according to the World Health Organization.

The health ministry said on its website that 154 people had now died of bird flu in Indonesia since 2005.

The virus typically spreads from birds to humans through direct contact, but experts fear it could mutate into a form that is easily transmissible between humans, with the potential to kill millions in a pandemic.

Bird flu fells Taiwan official

A top Taiwan official quit yesterday after being accused in a television documentary of covering up bird flu cases.

The departure of Hsu Tien-lai, chief of the Bureau of Animal and Plant Health Inspection and Quarantine, also followed a culling of 58,000 chickens after the less virulent H5N2 strain was found at two farms.

H1N1 Detected in Hong Kong Slaughterhouse
USAgNet

H1N1 was detected in Hong Kong's slaughterhouse during regular influenza virus surveillance for pigs in such facilities.

Despite the detection of pandemic H1N1 in pigs in Hong Kong, it is unlikely that Hong Kong will impose any import suspension of pork or pigs in the future on the grounds of H1N1 concerns.

Bird flu `epidemic' sparks chicken cull

Agricultural authorities have culled about 95,000 chickens following an outbreak of the H5N1 bird flu virus in northwest China.

The outbreak in Touying township of the Ningxia region , was discovered after more than 23,000 chickens began showing symptoms.

The Ministry of Agriculture said the "epidemic is now under control" and that work teams have been sent to the area to step up prevention measures.

In January, a man in Guizhou province died after contracting the bird flu virus, the second such fatality reported in the mainland this year, health authorities said.

China is considered one of the nations most at risk of bird flu epidemics because it has the world's biggest poultry population.
