Stop using Hydroxycut

Slimming supplement linked to cases of liver injury in US; distributor recalling products here
The Health Sciences Authority (HSA) is warning consumers to stop using Hydroxycut products.

Made by Iovate Health Sciences USA, they are being recalled in the United States due to reports of serious adverse reactions there.

Hydroxycut, a slimming supplement used by people trying to shed kilos and by bodybuilders to better define their muscles, has been linked to 23 cases of adverse reactions affecting the liver, including one death due to liver failure.

Hydroxycut products are distributed by Global Active in Singapore through GNC outlets and other retail outlets, including pharmacies. They are also sold over the Internet.

To date, no local reports of adverse reactions have been received in relation to the consumption of Hydroxycut products.

However, the HSA is concerned and does not want consumers to be exposed to any health risk. Global Active has initiated a voluntary recall of Hydroxycut products here.

The HSA advises consumers who have been taking them to stop doing so immediately and discard them. If they experience any adverse reactions or feel unwell, they should seek medical advice.

Symptoms of liver injury include jaundice, brown urine, nausea, vomiting, light-coloured stools, excessive fatigue, weakness, stomach or abdominal pain, itching and loss of appetite.

A GNC spokesman said the company started recalling the products after it was informed early yesterday by GNC in the United States.

Said the spokesman: 'GNC stores in Singapore have sold Hydroxycut for about 10 years. It had helped many shed some excess weight.

Suspect Antibiotics Recalled from HSI Alert

India's largest drug manufacturer, Ranbaxy Laboratories Ltd., issued an immediate U.S.- wide recall of nitrofurantoin, a prescription antibiotic commonly used to treat urinary tract infections.

According to Ranbaxy, these capsules are "unlikely to produce any serious adverse health effects," though they may possibly increase the incidence of nausea and vomiting. If that's what the company is saying now...before the story really hits the news...I'd hate to see what the side effects really turn out to be.

Bottom line: Check the label on your antibiotics – if it says 'nitrofurantoin,' contact your doctor and your pharmacy right away.

"Blood Transfusions May Have Killed Millions." from HSI Alert:-

That shocking headline appears over a 2008 issue of HSI Panelist Jon Barron's Baseline of Health e-letter. And the details are sobering.

Jon reported on a Duke University study that revealed how blood transfusions sharply increase the risk of heart attack and death. Here's why: In the U.S., the law allows blood banks to store red blood cells for a maximum of 42 days. The problem is that stored blood begins to deteriorate very quickly. In fact, in the first day of storage there's a 70 percent drop in levels of the molecule that carries nitric oxide in the blood, severely compromising the blood's ability to deliver oxygen.

Then comes the second half of this double whammy: When blood is deficient in nitric oxide, it pulls nitric oxide out of surrounding tissue, causing it to constrict and become deoxygenated. Fatalities occur when that tissue happens to be heart tissue.

Two studies have confirmed the Duke results while revealing another danger: Transfusions increase stroke risk.

Jon writes: "Blood transfusions have been used as a standard medical procedure for over 100 years. And now it turns out they may be responsible for many millions of unnecessary deaths worldwide during that time. How could this be? Unlike alternative health, modern medicine is based on science – not anecdotal evidence. So why didn't all those scientific studies on blood transfusions figure out that blood transfusions are, at best, an iffy proposition that should be reserved only for the most dire of emergencies?"

You can read Jon's full article on his web site at jonbarron.org.

Kids face danger from Guangdong

Nearly half of the clothing and a third of the furniture made for children in Guangdong has been found unsafe, with many products containing harmful chemicals.

The discoveries were made during an investigation by authorities in Guangdong, the heartland of the export industry, the China Daily reported.

Just 53.5 percent of garments that were checked met safety standards. Many contained excess amounts of formaldehyde, a chemical that can cause skin and respiratory infections.

As for children's furniture, 67.7 percent of it was deemed safe, with some of the questionable products containing too much formaldehyde or health- endangering heavy metals, including lead, cadmium and chromium.

"The main reason for the excessive content of formaldehyde and heavy metals is the use of sub-standard raw materials and paints," said Lin Ruixi, a spokesman for Guangdong's product safety administration.

But investigators said that 95 percent of toys made in Guangdong were safe.

The reputation of China's poorly regulated and corruption-plagued manufacturing industry has been deeply tarnished in recent years by safety scandals involving dangerous foods, toys and other products.

Millions of toys made in China - the world's largest producer - have been recalled globally in recent years amid fears they were made with toxic lead paints or had design flaws.

Traces of cocaine found in Red Bull cans

Hong Kong officials have found traces of cocaine in cans of Red Bull, a few days after Taiwanese authorities confiscated close to 18,000 cases of the popular energy drink.

Officials at the Centre for Food Safety said a laboratory analysis found tiny amounts of the illegal drug in samples of ''Red Bull Cola,'' ''Red Bull Sugar-free'' and ''Red Bull Energy Drink,'' a spokesman said.

The drink has now been taken off the shelves of major supermarkets. The spokesman said the amount of cocaine found in the drinks poses little health danger.

The traces were between 0.1 and 0.3 micrograms of the illegal drug per liter.

Red Bull moved quickly to deny the findings and said independent tests on the same batch of drinks had found no traces of cocaine.

Commissioner for Narcotics Sally Wong Pik-yee said the government is now taking legal advice on any possible legal liability for importers and retailers.

''Cocaine is a dangerous drug... The possession and dealing in the drug is a criminal offence,'' she said.

The revelation comes after Taiwan authorities said on Saturday they had confiscated nearly 18,000 cases of Red Bull imported from Austria after finding it contained traces of the drug.

Taiwanese authorities ordered the drinks to be removed from shelves pending further investigation.

Red Bull, whose advertising slogan is ''Red Bull gives you wings,'' was founded by Austrian toothpaste salesman Dietrich Mateschitz in the 1980s.

It has since become one of the dominant players in the global energy drinks market.

Are you trading heartburn for hip fracture?

Heartburn drugs – both prescription and OTC – commit a long list of side effect sins (like skin disorders, osteoporosis, and hepatitis, just to name a few) ...now we know they may break your hip.

Researchers found that even short-term use of the most popular types of heartburn drugs (proton pump inhibitors, like Prevacid, and H2 receptor antagonists, like Zantac) can increase your risk of hip fracture. In fact, people who took just one pill a day increased their fracture risk by 30%. And if you take more than one pill a day, you're setting yourself up for a 41% higher risk.

Bottom line: With the damage heartburn drugs can do, throwing them out may help you more than taking them. And there are dozens of ways to get rid of heartburn naturally – just check out the HSI Cure Library for a complete listing of safe, effective alternatives.

Just received this email. Not sure about the details. Maybe somebody care to comment ?

Credit Card at petrol pump

Beware when using credit card to fill petrol. Just got to know about this case through a friend that this thing actually happened to one of his co-workers.

She used her credit card to purchase gas at the pump (like most of us do). She received her receipt like normal. However, when she checked her statement, there were 2 $50 charges addedin addition to her
purchase.

Upon investigation, she found out that because she did not press the 'CLEAR' button on the pump, the employee inside the store was able to use her card to purchase his/her own gas!

To keep this from happening, after you get your receipt, you must press the 'CLEAR' button or your information will be stored until the next customer inserts their card.

Pressing the clear button is a must whenever your have the transactions, wherenever, whenever and every time.

Will Chinese drywall make you sick?

Thousands of homeowners in Florida are blaming drywall manufactured in China for everything from nosebleeds to corroded wiring. By Popular Mechanics

Keith Baker noticed sour smells emanating from the walls of his newly built home in Fort Myers, Fla., soon after he took up residence there in March 2008. Then the copper pipes from the water heater turned black, "as though someone threw soot on them."

Soon, Baker and his wife started experiencing sinus problems, dizzy spells and muscle aches. They are among thousands of homeowners in Florida and elsewhere who are blaming such problems on low-quality, imported drywall.

It's Fun to Know: The Health Hazards of Tight Jeans

"Skinny jeans" may be in these days, but watch out ladies. Wearing them can cause temporary nerve damage. Doctors are seeing more and more young women who are complaining of a numb, tingling, or burning sensation in their thighs - a.k.a. meralgia paresthetica.

The condition is caused by intense pressure on the femoral cutaneous nerve, and, until recently, has been a problem mainly for obese, pregnant women and workers who carry heavy equipment around their waist. Now that it's affecting young women, physicians have placed the blame squarely on their tight jeans.

But fear not, fashionistas - "tingling thigh syndrome" is only temporary. Switch to a baggier pair of pants and you'll be back to normal in no time... even if it's not the look you're going for.
