Oh Yes, some Hokkiens call their fathers "Ah Chek" and not "Ah Pa" :!: This surprise me cuz I only tot the Cantonese do this.
I call my late father, "Ah Suk" and not "Ah Pa" for precisely the same reason.

It's not just Hokkiens or Cantonese. Extends to Teochews too. So, in short, Chinese. :D

Well, my father called my grandfather "Ah Gu" (阿舅). Had me really confused when I was a kid. :D

Funny lah.. mojo

The differences in dialects was the reason Y Singapore pushed for Speak Mandarin campaign so as to promote a common language. However, in doing so, it diluted the richness of the culture of the various dialect groups.

None of my nieces and nephews can speak a word of Hokkien. The nephews will sure pick it up when they go thro' the army. Nothing is better for a sergeant to curse at a recruit in Hokkien rather than in English...

But maybe nowadays in army they use "Pleases" and "Thank Yous"??? :?

This thread has turned into an expectedly funny thread

All of U hve a wunderful sense of humor.

Actually dialects can be realli useful for passing on secret msgs in China. Once, I had to alert a fellow female biz associate to watch out for a Chinese official in N China.
I said to her in English : "Watch out. That guy trying to soak up oil lah".
This blurred queen failed to understand my England and I had to say the phrase in Cantonese.
