K: let me share my experience. Im not a pet pax. However my wife went against my wish and bought a toy poddle in March. Initially I was very angry, cos of the dog smell, fur dropping, noisy, they love to lick anywhere and everywhere! etc

Now after half a year, things are better now. Guessed got used to it.

Have learned to clean his ass after he poo (was swearing like mad initially when I was doing it, cos quite smelly), get used to the floor wont be too clean one day after mopping cos dogs loved to lick!..

Once a puppy is toilet trained, things are easier.

Barking wise, cant be helped. they cant talk! hence need to bark haha

Toy poddle dont drop fur, that help, unlike a lot of other breeds.

And dogs are generally quite smart, can teach them tricks, quite fun haha

This is my experience. Since I am nv a pet pax (given a choice now, I will still opt not to have one), the fact that now I can sort of accept one means most pple will be able to accept one as well ;)

thanks chiron...after reading your experience...ok, i stick to the occasional encounter with other people's dogs...hahahaha...no lah ..joke only...

i'm secretly aware that it's not easy keeping pets, so having a dog is not an easy task...like looking after a human baby like dat...(ok, maybe 30% effort)... some more ~10 - 15 years later..they die off...wah liao... can be traumatic boss...

Who like cats? meow!

I think there are dog person or cat person. I'm a cat person! I read somewhere that if you are a dog person, you'll have certain characteristics. Same for cats :)

From my observation, there are more dog lovers than cat lovers :)

Elephant kicks heroin habit with island rehab

An elephant has kicked his heroin habit after a three-year stint on an island rehab in southern China, an official and state media said.

The four-year-old Asian elephant, called Xiguang, has now being transported to a wildlife reserve in southwest China after being cured of his addiction with some clean living on Hainan island, Xinhua said.

Xiguang became hooked on the narcotic after animal smugglers captured him and other elephants by luring them with bananas laced with heroin in 2005, the official news agency said.

"The four elephants are arriving here from Hainan tomorrow,'' said wildlife park official Mr Xu.

Police caught the smugglers in May 2005 on the border between China and Burma.

Lost cat returned home after nine years

LONDON (Reuters) - A couple have been reunited with their missing cat after nine years, the RSPCA said Wednesday.

Dixie, a 15-year-old ginger cat, disappeared in 1999 and her owners thought she had been killed by a car.

She was found less than half a mile from her home in Birmingham after a concerned resident rang the animal charity to report a thin and disheveled cat who had been in the area for a couple of months.

RSPCA Animal Collection Officer Alan Pittaway checked her microchip and confirmed it was Dixie. She was returned to her owners, Alan and Gilly Delaney, within half an hour.

"In 29 years of working for the RSPCA I have never seen anyone so excited and happy as Mrs Delaney," Pittaway said. "It made my day to return Dixie to her owners."

The couple were "overjoyed" to be reunited with their missing cat after so many years.

"Dixie's personality, behavior and little mannerisms have not changed at all," said Gilly Delaney. "We don't think she has stopped purring since she came back through the door."

The RSPCA hope the story will encourage owners to have their pets microchipped.

kennynah wrote:i have been comtemplating keeping a pet dog, for over 30 years now...first my mother was against the idea....then now, my wife is not so hot about pets in the house ....

but anyways, appreciate anyone with pet dogs, share some experiences here...

for example... why do dogs smell constantly? cannot tahan that man...

I wonder if some dogs smell bad due to their diet or maybe their constant licking of their fur causes dampness and hence later smells???

i have my mini schnauzer for more than 9 yrs (he is my first dog), here is what i have learnt/things for u to consider before getting one.

1. Does the rest of yr family likes dogs?? cos if they do not like dogs it will be a challenge for them to live in the same house.
2. Anyone at home is allergic to dogs?? Are you considering having kids later in life?? I know of quite a few ppl who have to give up their dogs cos later when they have kids, they realised that the kids are allergic to them. Ideally have kids first and make sure they have no such allergies, then get the dog.
3. Financial costs eg. vet fees (annual jab and when the dog falls sick), grooming fees, health supplements, training courses, food, etc. My dog requires grooming every 2 mths and costs abt $50. He has skin problems since 4 yrs ago and require special diet/food that can only be bought at the vet, also to ease his discomfort he needs a jab every 3-4 mths and medication (which costs abt $80-$100 each visit). I know someone who has a dog that has a terminal illness, the dog went for surgery and was on 3 mths medication -- cost more than $2000, the dog died soon after due to the illness.
4. Do u have someone at home to watch/care for the dog?? Dogs are social animals, and if everyone at home work long hrs, the dog will not like the idea of being alone for long period and may likely have behavioural problems.
5. Who will care for the dog when u and yr family are going on a vacation?? I know there are pet hotels, but i dont quite like the idea of leaving them there, i would prefer to leave the dog w. a family member or a reliable friend.
6. Do u have time to bathe the dog weekly, walk him (ideally daily), groom him??

If after considering all these factors and u are convinced that u can care for a dog, then the next thing to do is to read up first on the breed of dog that u are keen on to see if its personality and breed suits yr lifestyle.

Having a dog is a 10-15 yrs (on avg) commitment. Caring for a dog needs lots of love, attention and $$$ (esp when they fall sick). My dog (Pepper) is the best gift i have received fm my husband and I agree that it will be devastating when eventually the dog dies. However, having the dog gives me lots of joy and has made me a less self-absorbed person. I have also learnt to be more caring and kind (esp towards animals in general).
