Just a question on Anti-virus software to users out there.

My 2 year subscription to Norton Internet Security is up for renewal soon. So far, I have not had any issues with spybots, virus attack etc... on the 2 laptops that run on NIS.

I am thinking of either renewing it or looking for a new antivirus software.

Users out there, care to share what you have been using and if it was useful to block out all the spybots and viruses??

personally, i use Symantec's Norton AnitVirus and over the years, I've had very little trouble with viruses... the bigger problem has been with spywares creeping into the system and eating up the machine resources w/out my knowledge...for that i've been using AVG - AnitSpyware (which is freeware)

but i suppose, most viruses are thru emails and that's when one needs a good anti-spam ware to prevent unwanted emails from sending in the poisons... i now use Thunderbird which has a pretty ok "junk" filtering system....outlook is junk in itself.

802 - You never kena virus without using anti-virus software?? That is quite interesting.... though I wouldn't take the risk myself cos' too much valuable information is transmitted from my PCs like Internet banking PWs and the likes...

I use a combination of Spybot S&D (spybot removal), Avira Antivir (some also recommend using Avast).

Avira has a nagging screen when you update, but that can be removed with a local security policy change on the OS. Avast needs registration which expires each year I think. Both are free.

kenna boot sector got wipe out before (even with anti-virus installed) ... anyway to counter this?

Spyware is more of a privacy thing; number of things you can do; scanning / cleaning with Spybot or Adaware, using HijackThis to check if you've got any fishy programs running on startup / as a service (can be used for trojan detection also). Can also check your firewall logs regularly, see if your PC is sending packets to suspicious places that you didn't visit.

Your bootsector one - not sure what other suggestions I can give other than to say - keep your AV signature databases updated (use AV s/w from a developer that provides regular signature updates), and use an antivirus s/w that does realtime scanning (i.e. when you try to open a document, it scans before you open it).

previously had bitdefender, i think it sucks since it gone me into such issues, not once but twice!

I'm surprised.. BD has supposedly scored pretty well on the antivirus detection rankings. I used to use AVG Free... until version 8 finally broke down in the sense that it doesn't install well on my PC, for some odd reason. Keeps failing to recognize my OS version properly. Then I switched to Clamwin, but that didn't offer realtime scanning, so out it went.

Ultimately, the best thing to do is still to be diligent about it... don't open files from unknown sources, and even files from known sources, check first. And don't surf too much porn sites.
