and why are our salaries not increasing fast enough?

could it be that many of us are not truly skilled in our area of work; ie. we are not as competent as we like to believe so?

hahahaha....

we must get over the notion that we depend on our bosses to get high salaries... the only person who can actually determine the amount of emolument is none other than ourselves...

if we are really excellent in our area of expertise, no scared no one will not pay the right amount to utilize our services...

we must break out of our "my oyster is the world" mentality ;)

Ah... think profits is better than 'salaries'... how about that?

Even for salaried people, those with P&L books on their shoulders earn more than those who don't.

And those who pay people to carry the P&L.... well, they have their oyster and eat it too.

If you want to know if you are underpaid or (oops) overpaid...

Haha, I no need to check. I KNOW I am under-paid.

Which is why I am trying to increase my passive income through dividends. Oh well. :)

i like + agree with wat bro k wrote

a lot of ppl r truly excellent in their work, but why shld a coy pay them, say, 3 to 5% more each yr to do the same job?
for inflation? becos the coy owe them? becos they r indispensable?

of cos in MANY cases, when they take on more responsibilities n excel in their work, the coy ask the same question :-)
tat's when most ppl complain they r overworked, underpaid

it will be better if they had put themselves in their bosses' shoes right from the start
understanding tat will allow one to "strategise" & "negotiate" accordingly

I guess one should work hard at one's career and manage the expectations.

If one is taking on alot of responsibilities and hitting the "excellence" or "outstanding" on the KPIs, I fail to see how company will not want to pay you well.

Its a global war for talent. Imagine if you work for a company for 4 yrs and in each of the 4 yrs, your performance appraisal has been "OUTSTANDING" and only 2-3% of the employees get that kind of grading in each year.. and you get it 4 yrs in a row...

The company will fight tooth and nail to keep you... and I can guarantee that your salary within that four years would go up at least 60%.

i think equally important, we must possess the attitude that the workplace is also a place where we hone our skills and acquire new ones.. in that sense, the employer is constantly offering learning opportunities ... these are intangible benefits that isn't spelled out in the pay packages..

but why do some people become "stuck" onto the same job scope year after year and get to do more only becos the supervisor assigns new jobscope? it has everything to do with work "attitude"...

i agree with bro ichew... it is very important to know one's purpose in the employment... it cannot be that one is in an employment ONLY bcos it pays the bills... if we cannot understand how we are contributing to a firm's success directly/indirectly, then, that employee has no place in that company.... in fact, that employee must quickly excel in the current job responsibility and seek newer and larger responsibilities and actively propose to the supervisor on how he/she can do more ....

these are the people who will never have to worry about being overworked and underpaid...becos, as i mentioned, many firms will gun for such employees....

bottomline is this : you just have to sit yourself quietly one corner...and ask this all important question...

"am i doing my job better than the other person?ie; do i know my stuff inside out?"

eg. You are a IT Network Engineer... you need to know if you are conversant with the latest MPLS technology...can you implement, can you troubleshoot, can you resolve problems faster than person X.... someone can work and study for CCIE, why not you?

If you are a sales man... are you getting more deals and hitting revenue targets consistently than the other chap? if not, why not?

If you are an Accountant... are you delivering meaningful management report that can shape the company's strategic business direction? or are you just churning numbers that a software can handle?

the answer will lead you to successfully take control of your career path....

Ha Ha ... you are assuming that inside the corporations, things are always business-like. In some of the "most respected and most admired" companies, I can tell you that there's a plenty of BS where political games takes priority over business decisions.

I have also seen some good talented managers that got played out because of politics. And they are not able to get jobs in their competitors simply because such high end jobs are limited.

How many "C" level job does the industry have ? Not to mention that in certain industries where it's very specialized, there's only a handful of players around ..

So these "C" level players end up being Consultants or start their own businesses or rely on their investments...
It's all about "how much you made when you were right" & "how little you lost when you were wrong"
