Kung fu star in court fight over $1.37m car by Jasmine Siu
Kung fu action star Donnie Yen Ji-dan is suing a car dealer for the return of HK$1.37 million plus damages for the non-delivery of a Porsche.
Yen bought the Porsche Cayenne in March 2011 for delivery that May.
While the mid-sized luxury SUV the Ip Man star was after is seen as a practical family car for those who can afford it, it is still capable of accelerating from zero to 100km/h in less than seven seconds.
In a writ filed in the Court of First Instance, Yen, 50, accused the dealers of using "unlawful means and conspiring together to defraud" him as they knowingly arranged for him to pay the full sum in the belief the car was to be delivered when there was none.
The four defendants are NBT Motors, its owner Lau Suk-hing and two staff members, Tung Yok-yeu and Gary Luk Chi-king.
The writ claims that on March 11, 2011, Yen's company, Bullet Films Productions, bought a new white Porsche worth HK$1.53 million from NBT Motors. The deal was signed by Yen's wife, Cecilia Wang Shi-shi, with a sum of HK$770,000 paid as deposit.
However, owing to manufacturing delays, the car was not delivered as promised and the dealer instead offered Yen a discount of HK$80,000 with a delivery date in August. Yen signed the new offer.
In early September, the dealer contacted Wang to arrange for a test drive. While a white Porsche was presented on September 5, the car was not the model Yen had paid for. Further, the actual delivery did not take place as the dealer claimed mo
re time was needed to prepare documents.
As compensation, the dealer offered Yen a further discount of HK$80,000. Wang paid the remaining balance of HK$600,000.
It was not until late October that the dealer told Wang the car could not be delivered and the HK$1.37 million would be repaid in three installments.
However, when all three checks bounced, Yen decided to sue the dealer.
Yen is a martial arts star best known for his role as wing chun master Ip Man in two movies from 2008 and 2010. The father of three is also a film director, producer and choreographer. Yen married Wang in 2003.
