- The Elections Department said recent moves to change to the boundaries of polling districts were "routine". The changes had fuelled speculation the government was planning snap elections even though they are not due till early 2012.

Party cadre sacked over luxury jaunt

A Communist Party official has been sacked for leading a delegation on a jaunt to Egypt and Dubai, where the group splurged on diamonds and stayed at top hotels, state media said Tuesday.

An internet blogger initially exposed Tan Rigui, the deputy party secretary of a Guangdong district, by posting a video online showing some of his government-funded ''work trip,'' the China Daily said.

A government investigation then found that Tan led 13 officials from his Duanzhou district to Egypt on the two-week trip early in 2007.

''[They] spent most of their time visiting famous scenic spots, watching shows and buying luxury goods, such as African diamonds,'' it said.

The trip ended with a stay at the ultra-luxurious Burj Al-Arab in Dubai, which bills itself as the world's only seven-star hotel.

Those who travelled with Tan included officials from a number of district government departments, who have all been asked to repay the costs of the trip that add up to 450,000 yuan (HK$510,255).

Hmmm.... a lot of signs indeed.

1) The barge for the fireworks in HK caught fire during CNY

2) I think the HK politician also picked the worst "chen" at the temple during CNY

3) The hotel next to the CCTV building in BJ, was burnt during CNY

4) And now the white lion is not spared ...

Is this an omen? You know, last time watch those TVB serials, always got this thing - lightning strike a rock, split it open, got red bloody words inside that's a prophecy about some upcoming disaster... Eek... scary shit.

Merlion hit by lightning

SINGAPORE'S iconic Merlion statue, a popular tourist attraction, was damaged by lightning on Saturday afternoon during a thunderstorm, according to reports.

No one was hurt.

The Merlion was struck by lightning between 4 and 5 pm local time, causing parts of the statue to fall near a group of startled visitors.

The 8.6 metre-tall Merlion has the head of a lion and the body and tail of a fish, and sits at the mouth of the Singapore River near the central business district.

The lion head symbolises Singapore's founding by an Indonesian prince who named his new settlement after a lion he saw when he landed on the island. The body of the fish represents Singapore's origins as a fishing village.

Singapore, or 'Singapura', is derived from the Sanskrit words Singa (or Lion) and Pura (City).

Singapore's police could not be reached for comment while a spokesman for Singapore's information ministry said she did not have any details about the incident. -- REUTERS
