New research says these popular supplements could double your risk of cancer by Dr. David Eifrig

Trash your selenium and vitamin E supplements today…

Selenium is a mineral that supports metabolism and, as an antioxidant, reduces the risk of cancer. Brazil nuts contain the highest concentration of selenium. And vitamin E is a well-known, naturally occurring antioxidant that prevents damage to cell membranes, commonly found in whole grains, nuts, and leafy green vegetables.

Until recently, these two supplements were thought to reduce the risk of prostate cancer.

But a new study published in the February 21 Journal of the National Cancer Institute shows the opposite is true. This study used information gathered by the Selenium and Vitamin E Cancer Prevention Trial from 2001 to 2008, which studied a group of 36,000 men over the age of 50.

Results show that vitamin E supplements more than doubled the risk of aggressive prostate cancer in men with low selenium levels. And for men with high selenium levels who either took selenium alone or with vitamin E, the risk also nearly doubled.

Researchers concluded that, “Men should avoid selenium or vitamin E supplementation at doses that exceed recommended dietary intakes.”

In developed countries, like the U.S., we get enough selenium and vitamin E in our diets. So if you’re taking a selenium or vitamin E supplement, I recommend throwing it out immediately.

The Dangers of Cardiac Screening

It's a case where an ounce of prevention might end up doing more harm than good.

That's what a surprising new report by the American College of Physicians says about having your heart tested when you have no symptoms of anything being wrong with it.

Cardiac screening in adults at low risk for heart disease is what ACP President Dr. David Fleming called "low-value care" since "it does not improve patient outcomes and it can lead to potential harms."

Instead, the ACP is advising doctors do an assessment of individual risk factors. Patients found to be at low risk, it says, should not be given electrocardiograms or other heart tests.

"Even 'baseline' ECGs are rarely helpful," Dr. Fleming cautioned. A false positive, for example, "may result in unnecessary tests and treatments with their own additional risks." And "the harms of radiation exposure may not be seen for years."

Instead, the ACP suggests that low-risk patients be encouraged to take preventive measures. It advises doctors to work on reducing risk factors such as smoking, diabetes, hypertension, high cholesterol, and obesity, and encourage patients to get more exercise.

So what if your doctor orders such a test? What then?

"When the doc says to get a test, you should ask why," said Dr. Roger Chou, who authored the report. "As a patient, you should ask what they are basing their decision on. We don't want to do additional tests just for the sake of testing."

But cardiac monitoring is still indicated if you have symptoms. Or if you're about to run your first marathon or climb your first mountain.

The Red Meat Myth

The war on red meat is still very real, but is it justified?

According to Dr. Aaron Carroll our concerns about health problems related to consuming red meat are wrong. The real problem and cause of most of American's health problems is consuming too many calories.

Bottom line: "The best diet," Professor Adam Carroll says, "is the one that you’re likely to keep. What isn’t helpful is picking a nutritional culprit of bad health and proclaiming that everyone else is eating wrong. There’s remarkably little evidence that that’s true anytime anyone does it."

Anger

It's something we've all been told a thousand times -- before you lose your temper, count to 10.

But when you blow your fuse, the danger lasts a lot longer than a few seconds -- especially if you have a history of heart trouble.

According to a survey of more than 300 heart attack victims at a hospital in Sydney, Australia, feelings of intense anger can make you 8.5 times more likely to suffer a heart attack for up to two hours afterwards.

And a recent review of nine previous studies involving 6,400 patients also linked acute anger to a higher rate of strokes, heart attacks and arrhythmia, or irregular heartbeat, within the same time frame.

Especially at risk are people with existing heart problems, according to a leader of that review.

If you want to protect your heart, it's important to keep your temper in check. Anger management specialist Joe Pereira suggests several ways of doing that.

One is to give people the benefit of the doubt. "Someone may say something to you and the impact may be hurtful. But that isn't necessarily their intent," he reminds us. He also advises us to have less rigid expectations of others.

Experts also recommend taking a "time out," to try and resolve problems, instead of just complaining about them and getting flustered.

There are also calming supplements like L-theanine that can help keep you on an even keel.

The important thing to remember is that anger can end up doing a lot more damage to you than it does to anyone it's directed at. Turns out living well and happy isn't just the best revenge -- it's the healthiest.
