Rude lesson for Harvard cash pair
Billionaire couple Pan Shiyi and Zhang Xin have faced a deluge of criticism for donating US$15 million (HK$117 million) to Harvard, one of the richest and most prestigious universities in the United States.
Critics say the money would be better spent on students in China. But the couple behind real estate giant Soho China are giving US$100 million to fund Chinese students, and the gift to Harvard started the program.
More than quarter of foreign students in America are Chinese, most funded by families. But Zhang told The Wall Street Journal that the Soho scholarships encouraged poorer students to study abroad.
Some users of Sina Weibo argued that needy students within China are more deserving of help. Others noted that the couple have a foundation for education in rural areas of China.
Zhang responded by saying good education has been for the wealthy, but "our scholarships will change this phenomenon."
