Can thought bring about a change?

Can thought bring about a vital change? Up to now we have relied on thought, have we not? The political revolution, whether of the right or the extreme left, is the result of thought. And can thought fundamentally change man, change you and me?

If you say it can, then you must see all the implications—that man is the product of time, that there is nothing beyond time, and so on and on. So, if I am to create a fundamental change in myself, can I rely on thought as an instrument to bring about that transformation?

Or, can there be a fundamental change only when there is the ending of thought? My problem, then, is to experiment, to find out, and I can find out only through self-knowledge, through knowing myself, watching, being aware in moments when I’m off guard.

It is only when I begin to understand the process of my own thinking that I can find out whether or not there is a possibility of a fundamental change; until then, mere assertion that I can or cannot change is of little significance.

I Have Complete Control Over My Own Thoughts...

You can find yourself in an endless loop where you explain that you feel negative because of the negative behavior of someone else. But if, instead, you take control of your own emotions and you think an improved thought because it feels better to do so, you will discover that no matter how the negative trend got started, you can turn it around.

You have no real control of what anyone else is doing with their Vibration (or with their actions, for that matter), but you have complete control over your own thoughts, Vibrations, emotions, and point of attraction.

What is the key quality that a devotee, aspiring to attain oneness with the Divine, should possess?

Alertness is a key quality that a devotee should cultivate. To attach oneself to the flimsy, paltry, foolishness of the world and to run after them and worry when they slip out of the hands or jump in glee when you get them, is Ignorance.

On the other hand, if you are awaiting a chance to commune with the Divine, keeping awake for the opportunity of hearing the words of the Lord, imbibing their essence, that is called Internal Illusion.

If a devotee gets this, they are fortunate. Develop this quality of alertness and dwell on the thoughts of the Divine. Do not give it up or reduce for any reason to any extent. The thoughts will illuminate you and you will become holy without fail and attain the goal.

Can thought resolve our problems?

Can thought resolve our problems? By thinking over the problem, have you resolved it? Any kind of problem—economic, social, religious—has it ever been really solved by thinking?

In our daily life, the more you think about a problem, the more complex, the more irresolute, the more uncertain it becomes. Is that not so—in our actual, daily life? You may, in thinking out certain facets of the problem, see more clearly another person’s point of view, but thought cannot see the completeness and fullness of the problem, it can only see partially, and a partial answer is not a complete answer; therefore it is not a solution.

The more we think over a problem, the more we investigate, analyse, and discuss it, the more complex it becomes. So is it possible to look at the problem comprehensively, wholly? And how is this possible? That, it seems to me, is our major difficulty.

For our problems are being multiplied—there is imminent danger of war, there is every kind of disturbance in our relationship—and how can we understand all that comprehensively, as a whole? Obviously, it can be solved only when we can look at it as a whole—not in compartments, not divided.

And when is that possible? Surely, it is only possible when the process of thinking—which has its source in the “me”, the self, in the background of tradition, of conditioning, of prejudice, of hope, of despair—has come to an end.

What is the relationship between the Individual, the Divine and the Society?

Each one should observe three principles in life - Love for the Divine, Fear of Sin and Morality in Society.

You should realize that the Soul, the Divine and the Society are all aspects of the Divine. Lack of fear of sin in human beings is the root cause of the absence of morality in society. One bereft of morality is not a human being at all. For everything, morality is important.

The Divine loves all. If one has love for the Divine, there will certainly be unity in society. People indulge in sinful deeds despite knowing that the Divine can give them punishment. They have no fear of sin. If one lacks fear of sin, there can be no morality in the society. If everybody has fear of sin, then there will be morality in the society.
