How should we do service?

Many social workers visit hospitals to do service. Most of the work done, like fanning patients, writing letters for them and singing bhajans, appears mechanical.

It is done as that is what is defined as service and done without paying heed to what the patient really needs! That is incorrect.

Service must be done with the full cooperation of the mind, gladly, intelligently, and reverentially. The patient should not feel disgusted at the fussiness of the social worker, but indeed look forward to their arrival, as that of someone near and dear!

If you do not like one type of service, do not engage in it. Do not burden your mind by the unpleasantness of a task.

Work done mechanically is like the flame of an oil-less wick. Your mental enthusiasm is the oil, pour it and the lamp will burn clear and long.

- Divine Discourse, Mar 25, 1958.

Each time a loaf of house brand bread is purchased from NTUC FairPrice over the next two weeks, the supermarket chain will donate S$9 to the NTUC U Care Fund to help low-income families.

What sort of an attitude will benefit us as well as benefit the country?

Krishna declared in the Bhagavad Gita, “Every being is an aspect of My Divinity”.

When the Divine considers you as part of Himself, you should also consider others as your own self. Love All, Serve All. See no difference between individuals; do not think of one as a pauper and the other a millionaire.

Many millionaires today are engaged in filling their own belly. They are not prepared to give even a morsel of food as alms to a beggar who stands at their doorstep.

What is the use of having such rich men in our country? They are rich only for name’s sake but in reality they are the poorest of the poor.

Pursue the path of charity and righteousness. Consider others as your own brothers and sisters. Rather, consider them as thyself.

- Divine Discourse, Aug 15, 2007.

Only when morality is upheld, can there be equality, fraternity and freedom in the society.

"One person gives freely, yet gains even more; another withholds unduly, but comes to poverty.

A generous person will prosper; whoever refreshes others will be refreshed."
