Or if that is not possible, spread the bed and sleep for some time. Thereafter your worries will disappear and you'll find solutions.

Is it possible to live a life without any pattern, without any goal, without any idea of the future, a life without conflict? It is only possible when one lives completely with “what is”. With “what is” means with that which is actually taking place. Live with it; do not try to transform it, do not try to go beyond it, do not try to control it, do not try to escape from it, just look at it, live with it.

If you are envious, or greedy, jealous, or you have problems, sex, fear, whatever they are, live with them without any movement of thought that wants to move away from them. Which means what? One is not wasting one’s energy in control, in suppression, in conflict, in resistance, in escape.

All that energy was being wasted; now one has gathered it up. Because one sees the absurdity of it, the falseness of it, the unreality of it, one has now the energy to live with “what is”.

Allowing “what is” to blossom

I see that so long as fear exists there can be no flowering. So I have to tackle fear, not through ideas, but tackle it as a fact, which means I will allow fear to blossom.

I will let fear blossom, and see what happens. All this requires a great deal of inward perception. Allow fear to blossom—do you know what that means? It may mean I may lose my job, be destroyed by my wife, my husband.

Can I allow everything to blossom? It does not mean I am going to murder, rob somebody, but can I just allow “what is” to blossom?

What are the pitfalls that we lead ourselves to, trapped in our worldly lives? What are the tips to avoid the pitfalls?

During the little time available, if you don't think of some good subject, but merely recollect the ignorant prattle of others, it is as if you too joined in the blame game. This is harmful to a devotee. One word following another produces anger and pain.

The path of devotion is designed for suppressing, not developing these qualities. The talk of the fault finders is like the sound of bronze. Cheap metals make more sound. Gold which does not make sound is very valuable. So too, true devotees will remain mute, following the path of silence.

Their tongue will be fully engaged in the repetition of the essential greatness of the Divine's Name. It is best that they have no respite for any other word. So do not permit the words of the bronze-voiced persons to enter your ears, instead fill them with the Name of the Divine.

Perception of “what is” and mutation

Human beings are violent; that is actually “what is”; and the danger they have brought about in this world is the result of this violence, it is the outcome of fear.

What is there dangerous about observing it and trying to completely eradicate that fear—that we may bring about a different society, different values?

There is great beauty in observation, in seeing things as they are, psychologically, inwardly; which does not mean that one accepts things as they are; which does not mean that one rejects or wants to do something about “what is”; the very perception of “what is” brings about its own mutation.

Relationships I Don't Want, Clarify Those I Do Want...

Whenever you know what you do not want, you always know more clearly what you do want, so in a poignant moment of awareness of another person's undesirable situation, give your undivided attention to the idea of improvement that has hatched from your interaction/observation.

And as you learn to do that, not only will you be of increasing value to others, but you will see how your relationships with others adds immeasurably to your own becoming.

Attempting to Control Others Attracts More to Be Controlled...

It is easy to understand how you would come to the conclusion that your path to feeling good is through influencing or controlling the behavior of others.

But as you attempt to control them (through influence or coercion), you discover that not only can you not contain them - but your attention to them brings more like them into your experience.

You simply cannot get to where you want to be by controlling or eliminating the unwanted.

What is the point in listening and observing all the goodness?

If all is eaten at the same time, the food will not be digested. It would lead to bad health. What we eat requires time to get digested and assimilated.

Similarly, what is heard should be understood and put in practice. Take time to digest and practice what you internalized. Placing your burden on Destiny and keeping quiet means diminution of effort.

Without effort and prayer, Destiny and Grace cannot be attained. Start the effort! With effort and prayer, Destiny can be attained.

Emerson: The Quintessential American by Alexander Green, Spiritual Wealth

Judging by my mailbag, I struck a chord with last week's column about Henry David Thoreau and the Transcendentalists.

Transcendentalism, of course, reached its ascendancy more than 150 years ago. Yet it casts a long shadow and still speaks to us today, especially during these tough political and economic times.

So let's take a closer look at the movement and its inspiring founder and leader, Ralph Waldo Emerson.

A theologian, essayist, orator and poet, Emerson is variously described as America's own philosopher, our first literary giant, the father of the environmental movement, and the founder of what literary critic Harold Bloom calls "the American religion," a distinctive blend of individualism and self-reliance.

Emerson's philosophy, Transcendentalism, began as a ferment in the Unitarian church. It was not a religious movement, however, but a spiritual one.

There were no doctrines, houses of worship or ritualized devotions. Emerson emphasized not belief in a particular creed but rather independent thinking, good works, and the development of character.

His interest was in the principles that unite us, not the doctrines that divide us. Following Jesus' insistence that the kingdom of Heaven is within you, Emerson sought moral universals, what he called "interior truth."

He insisted, for example, that if the Confucians in China, the stoics of Athens, the noblest Buddhists, and the wisest Christians all met and conversed, they would find themselves of one mind.

Like Thoreau, he also believed that solitude in nature leads to true enlargement of the mind and spirit. His books, he said, "should smell of pine and resound with the hum of insects."

Emerson's words had a powerful effect on his contemporaries, bringing Walt Whitman "to a boil," as Whitman himself put it.

(In turn, Whitman's universal voice, descriptive style and free verse form became the nation's single most distinctive contribution to world poetry.)

Emerson was not just a contemplative theologian, however. He was also a man of action. A passionate abolitionist, he spoke out forcefully against slavery, calling it not just an institution but "a destitution."

How does this nineteenth-century philosopher speak to us today?

Like William James, the great psychologist who followed in his footsteps, Emerson recognized that most of our difficulties start right between our ears.

The first key to resolving your problems is to upgrade your thinking. "This time, like all times, is a very good one," said Emerson, "if we but know what to do with it."

We also fail to recognize how our problems benefit us by strengthening us, advancing our interests.

When a man "is pushed, tormented, defeated," he wrote, "he has a chance to learn something; he has been put on his wits; on his manhood; he has gained facts; learns his ignorance; is cured of the insanity of conceit; has got moderation and real skill."

If it doesn't seem that way now, recognize that it may in the future. It's often just a matter of perspective. "The years teach much," Emerson said, "which the days never know."

Like his fellow Transcendentalists, Emerson lived a simple life and warned of the trap of materialism. Financial success, he said, lies never in the amount of money we have, but in the relation of income to outgo.

"It is a cold, lifeless business," he wrote, "when you go to the shops to buy something which does not represent your life and talent, but a goldsmith's."

Of course, much of the pressure to seek and display affluence comes not from within but from society itself. The world wants you to live according to its opinion, not your own.

"Every brave heart must treat society as a child," he said, "and never allow it to dictate."

Emerson is hard to categorize and impossible to sum up. He described himself as an endless seeker, devoting his life to understanding the human mind and the mysteries of existence.

American literature, philosophy, religion and social policy have all been strongly affected by his words and deeds.

Historians say he may have had more influence in the shaping of American thought than any other individual - and is second only to Lincoln as a spokesman for the country's highest ideals.

Yet Emerson modestly claimed that he taught just one principle, the infinitude of the private man.

"Nothing is at last sacred," he said, "but the integrity of your own mind."

What You Are

Put more emphasis on what you are rather than what you're not. If you focus on all the things you are instead of focusing on all the things you aren't (but want to be), you'll find that the things you aren't soon turn into the things you are.

When you value what you are, you become more. When you undervalue yourself based on what you aren't, you become less than what you already are.

But all this becoming more and becoming less business happens in your consciousness only. Just because you see yourself as less, does not mean that you are less. It only means that you are less in your eyes.

In reality, you are already whole, perfect and infinitely valuable, whether you see it or not. The difference between seeing it or not is the difference between a consciously fulfilling, joyous life and a mediocre, complacent life.

Which do you choose to see?
