How to Beat a Bad Health Habit By Dr. David Eifrig
Your time spent exercising is wasted... if you spend your days sitting. Sitting for just two hours counteracts 20 minutes of exercise.
A study from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center found that the benefits of exercise are essentially erased if you spend your day sitting. So if you sit for eight hours a day, you'd need to exercise for more than 80 minutes to reap the benefits.
Some surveys show Americans sit about 15 hours each day. That's 105 hours of sitting each week. And since 80% of people get less than two hours of exercise per week, this shows we're having a health crisis. A sedentary life increases the risk of obesity, heart attack, and cancer.
One possible solution some people enjoy is to use a stand-up desk. This is a desk – often motorized – that moves up and down so you can alternate between sitting and standing during the day. My assistant and senior analyst both use this type of desk.
My analyst – Matt Weinschenk – says he likes to stand when his productivity slows, especially during the afternoon when most people get tired. Or you can do what I do... Go for a walk around your office several times during the day. Instead of calling a coworker or sending an e-mail, get up and go talk to them in person.
Better yet - use these short exercise breaks
