China selling U.S. bonds because yuan under pressure: Yellen

Fed would consider negative rates if economy soured: Yellen

Euro-Area Bonds Erase Gain as Yellen Comments on Interest Rates

(Reuters) - The head of the U.S. Federal Reserve said on Wednesday that China is selling U.S. Treasury bonds because the yuan is under depreciation pressure.

"China has been selling Treasuries because its currency has been under downward pressure," Fed Chair Janet Yellen told a committee of U.S. House lawmakers.

There has been speculation that China and central banks in other countries are spending their dollar reserves to support their currencies, in order to offset an expected drain of capital due to slowing economies.

Bonds (10 year): 2.26% versus 2.23%.

After rallying further off the low high two weeks back, bonds stalled Friday and faded to test the Thursday upside gap.

Chinese Bonds

There is a serious risk of default on corporate bonds issued by China's Ordos Huayan Investment Group, the bonds' custodian Haitong Securities said.

Haitong said it was told by Huayan, that it had not secured enough funds to make 1.05 billion yuan worth of principal and 94.56 million yuan in interest payments to bond investors on their due date of December 17.
