Well when the tier structure came about my friend has a problem meeting the tiers as he had to sell products that weren't good i.e structure deposits which are now the bane of most retail banks now. Basically , he went straight to private banking and never looked back.

So the main issue is there is a different in ablities of these "salesman" and truely people whose intentions are to serve their clients.

Well, I find that case disgusting because people actually spend a lot of time and energy making things tick in the background so that these salespeople could sell them - and their basic pay doesn't even come close. I can understand if she (or your friend) makes a pile based on commissions... but a basic pay of 6K on top of the commissions??? Tsk tsk.

Things happen so fast in this internet age... that the inevitable "credit crunch" and "negative wealth effect" spillover into the real economy that you mention is taking place... may perhaps give way to the "credit relief" (with the heavy intervention of the authorities) and "positive wealth effect" impact on the real economy and the beginning of the next bubble sooner than we think? TOL:-

The bad news will persist and traders are now expecting the market to retest the lows.

If you are sitting on some stocks, what would you do ?

1) Wait & Sell into the next rally ? That may mean that you may have to endure a 10% drop before the next rally comes.

2) Sell first then buy back in a few days time. What happens if the regulators makes a surprise announcement in the meantime ?

3) Wait it out. Again, that means enduring another big drop.

4) Focus on the buying later. Clean up your watchlist & wait for the stock to move to the price you want.

5) Buy some puts to protect your portfolio. However, you may be buying the puts at a high price today.

It is always darkest before the dawn. It is not the end of the world.

The above is to help me think about the course of action for today.

Take care,
Winston

sell some covered calls at a strike that is your target exit point. use this money to buy some protective puts at strike equal to cut loss point...; ie collar that stock position

TOL:-

How does one knows when the market has turn from a bear marlet to a bull market ?

1) When people start to measure things using PE rather than P/B

2) When people switched from "Selling into Rally" to " Buying on Dips"

Hoho, i like the one about using PE rather than PB :) There's another indicator, when your email is flooded by analysts who no longer screams sell or underweight.

TOL:

Singapore's ambition of being a financial hub.

Currently the closest competitor is Hong Kong... these 2 countries form the twin engines of Asia financial power .. Perhaps due to diligence of tight regulation, luck or "underdevelopment" of sophisticated financial products, our local banks has emerged with scratches compared to other banks which some no longer exist or had been nationalised.

On hindsight, the lack of complicated financial products and investors' education may also meant that we still had a long way to go in order to realise the financial hub dream. Can we be Wall St of Asia?
Tempered.
